I do when I can't read them.
I wasn't talking to anyone else but the OP when I first wrote this.
He should simply be made aware, that his chances in this NG to get help
are minimal if he doesn't conform to the language most people speak.
How I tell him that, is up to me, if you don't like the way I tell him that,
too bad. If you disagree, and wish to clarify things more for the OP,
please be my guest.

I will do neither of these options.
I will try to read those, try to help, and tell them that they
should post in english, if they like to get some help.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
It turns out that the problem was...
...the "0" key on my keyboard was sticking, and therefore at boot-up LILO
tought it was getting recurrent, irrelevant input and simply ignored it and
"waited" for legitimate input (i.e., pressing ENTER).

You might want to look at Slackware. You can install a base system from
floppy and go from there. As for how to do a Linux from scratch you can
find help here.

Hope this helps.

Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 08:51:55 GMT
Dear linux experts,
I have installed RedHat Linux 7.0 on my Compaq Deskpro 4000 and I am having
trouble rebooting the system with "reboot" command.
When I try to reboot, it shuts down (killing all the processes), but then,
it goes into black screen and does not restart the system. Only way to
restart the system is to push the power button to power down and restart.
I also had Windows NT 4.0 installed before on the same machine and it
rebooted (Shutdown and Restart) fine without any problems. It does appear
to be Linux issue (possible related to Compaqs).
Has anyone had this problem on Compaq?
I have talked to Compaq tech support without success.
Can someone help?
Thank you

I am a new Linux user and need help setting up Grub to boot Linx,
Windows2000 and DOS. I already have it booting Linux and win2000, I now need
to add a DOS boot partition. I have already created the DOS boot partition.
I
have formated it as FAT and plan to install DOS 6.22. This poses no problem,
as I can do this from a DOS boot disc.
The problem comes in when I have to set up grub to handle this boot as well.
Any help would be appreciated.

No. Postings are in english for the same reason that all non-national
communications between pilots and between pilots and ground are in
english. So that everyone can understand everyone else.
You really do not want an n**2 - way conversation in one group.
Form your own newsgroup in a national hierarchy if you want to talk
in swahili.

The comp hierarchy is in english.
I even had to maltreat the subject line to get it back into ANSI so

Subject: Newbie question: Problem on starting up X Window
Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 18:29:53 +0800
I have installed my RH Linux 7.0. However, I am getting problem on starting
up my X Window. Here is what I have done so far:
1. Re-install my PC with RH 7.0
2. Switch to version XFree86 v 4.0.1 by using these commands (per Matrox
G450 driver installation manual):
cd /etx/X11
ln -sf /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 ./X
3. Copy the mga_drv.o (beta 1.00.004) to the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers
(per Matrox G450 installation manual)
4. Start X windows by typing startx
However, everytime the I start this, my screen seems to be "shaking" and I
can only see about 1/4 of my screen. I have to move my mouse so that I could
see the other parts of the screen. When I try to do CTRL+ALT plus +, I get
an error message that I am already out of sync.
Questions:
1. How would I know if I am already running under XFree86 v4.0.1?
2. Was the command I used in step # 2 above correct so that I could now
start using XFree86 v4.0.1?
3. Lastly, in the Matrox G450 update manual, they said that all I had to do
was copy the mga_drv.o file to a specific directory. However, they did not
mention what else I had to do after this. Do I have to run Xconfigurator
again? When I did this, RH was still seeing a MATROX G400 driver. How would
I tell Linux to use the new mga_drv.o driver?
BTW, my monitor is an HP p700, model# D8906A (17 inch).
Thanks,
Roose

And then I make a bootnet.img to floppy disk, and use this disk to book up

wrong with the FTP installation? I have tried HTTP method as well and I got

Subject: ISDN cards and SMP - 2.2.14
Date: Sun, 18 Mar 2001 11:11:38 +0000
I've hear it said that ISDN cards aren't supported with SMP kernels.
If I compile a kernel with SMP and ISDN support I get a whole bunch of
messages of the form:
depmod: *** Unresolved Symbols in /lob/modules/2.2.14-6.0/misc/isdn.o
and also for
isdnloop.o, isdn_bsdcomp.o, hisax.o, eicon.o
but also
wtd.o, wavefront.o, sound.o, soundcore.o, sb.o and loads of others.
Can I take to suggest that multi-processor machines will not only fail
with isdn, but won't do sound and a shed load of other stuff because of
broken drivers ?
If I try and load an isdn driver after booting with:
modprobe -v hisax id=SedlbauerSC type=15 protocol=2 irq=11 io=0x278
it fails saying:
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-6.0/net/slhc.o
/lib/modules/2.2.14-6.0/net/slhc.o: unresolved symbol
printk_Rdd132261
and in addition to printk, gives similar responses for memcmp, kmalloc,
kfree and ip_fast_csum. It finishes by reporting:
/lib/modules/2.2.14-6.0/net/slhc.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.14-6.0/net/slhc.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.14-6.0/net/slhc.o: insmod hisax failed.
Is SMP support still developing ? It seems a bit odd that SMP support
in drivers isn't routine. Does it really make driver development much
more difficult ? Is the situation any better in RH7 or kernel 2.4 ?
Cheers, J/.

I don't dispute this. But that's a world away from the original claim
that "you can't give Linux a virus unless you go out on the net as
root'.
Arguably, it is within Microsoft's power to fix the flaws in their OS
and applications that make virus propagation under Windows so
trivial. But perhaps they don't want to upset McAffee and friends.
