Just an idea: Check wether the plug & play option in your BIOS is
enabled. If it is, disable it and configure with yast again.

hope that helps

I now have re-installed virtually all of the RPM's that were installed.
This solved the problem. I'm going to try to find out the difference
tonight.

Thanks for your time. If I find out what was causing trouble I'll let
you know.

I have a HP2500C printer with a MIO print server card. I have been able to
set the IP params etc. I am able to ping the machine. However, don't know
the name to put in for :rp=: entry. The docs I downloaded from HP's
support site mention IP in passing.

Does any know the identification for the 'port' name associated with the
'lp' functionality. (FWIW, with Intel Netports it is LPT1_TEXT and
LPT1_PASSTHRU for text and raw mode resp.)

Hey Folks,
I have a Dell workstation w/ 2 GB of RAM, however the free command
only returns 1 GB for total memory.
I have added
echo 2147483648 > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax
to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, but this didn't work.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Matt

Of course, here you have a point! If corresponding german (or in
general: national) groups exist, it is way better to post there in
German (or whatever idiom).

Okay, that's fine.

Furthermore, I often find it really interesting to see foreign postings,
in Spanish, or even in Dutch, which I can read quite well (without ever
learning it; of course, speaking it is something different :)
But that's just my personal interest in languages, I guess...

We seem to have differing opinions, that's all right, but I stay with

First is the kernel configured to support more than 1GB of mem? If it is
and it still only shows 1GB then you might need to follow below. If your
kernel isn't configured to use more than 1GB of mem then before trying
the line below I would recommend you check into it more or you may cause
yourself troubles.
You Have Been Warned.

Add the line below to the /etc/lilo.conf file

  append="mem=2000M"

Then run "lilo -v" to update the MBR.

If you really must have them that way round then I understand that ICS
will work, but setting that up isn't really a Linux question.

A better way, IMHO (and probably a number of others here) is to connect
the Linux box to the net and set up IP masquerading with ipchains (2.2
kernels) or iptables (2.4 kernels). See the masquerading howto.

Hello,

After the installation of a new kernel 2.4.2 (for ATA support) I can't
mount my windows-partitions and dos floppy disk anymore. All these
worked fine with the older kernel, now I can only mount my linux
filesystems.

The settings in /etc/fstab are correct and worked fine with the older
kernel:
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto owner,exec,dev,suid,rw,noauto 0 0

I installed the kernel in the following way

make menuconfig
// enabled the following:
//     filesystems -> vfat
//    filesystems -> msdos
make dep
make modules
make modules_install
make bzImage
make install

Is there something wrong with this sequence?

Does it make a functional difference when you choose for a module or for
including it in the image?

tnx,

A little more info- I did a Google search to try and find more/different

etc/conf.modules as root and it said "no such file or directory". I also
tried cat /dev/sndstat and it told me "no such device" .Nothing in dmesg
on sound other than es1371-doesn't show device. All info I find seems to
lead me down these same paths which are obviously getting me nowhere. I
am obviously not doing something properly and cant seem to find any info
to tell me what I have missed. Please tell me what I am doing wrong or
not doing at all since all of the how-to info is leading me in circles

To revise from a previous post:plug and play disabled in bios.Hardrake

play sound file. CD player works but .wav sound files do not
work.Nothing in /dev
files relating to sound.Have read multiple how-to documents which all
say the same info-device files are normally created during
installation.Does not mention what needs to happen when device files
were not created.Running Mandrake 8 beta2 w/2.4 kernel.

The Debian Installer says that when you choose driver modules to
install, it will provide a page of description on each module; but it
doesn't. Therefore I had to guess which modules I might need, I
installed a module for AppleTalk.

I now have a ipddp0 device loading at boot. What is this device? Does
the driver I loaded into the kernel expect to find an AppleTalk card
hanging on my machine? Should I remove this device from the config
file?

Really what I want to do is use my Linux box (an old 486 laptop) as a
file server on my home LAN using FTP. While I was installing, I
thought, "Hey, AppleTalk, couldn't hurt..." But what I want to use is a
3com PCMCIA ethernet card.

I would like the advice of a Macintosh user who has a LAN with mixed
Macs and Linux boxes: What is the most sensible and hassle-free method
for doing this?
