I am trying to setup a gateway to the internet using linux. I
currently have two Linux servers running. One serves as a mail and
DNS server and the other as a firewall and internet gateway. they are
attached to a Novell 4.11 network using tcp/ip. I currently have this
setup working with RedHat 6.2.

I am trying to gateway/firewall to RedHat 7 using Diald version
0.99.1 release 2. I can not seem to get this new server to connect to
the internet. When I use a Windows PC on the network to access the
Internet I can get diald to dial out but the connection is immediately
dropped. If I use lynx on the linux server I just get a message
saying that the host is unreachable, it does not dial out and try to
connect.

I have connected to my ISP using dip. After I have entered mode ppp
and returend to the command prompt i try to start lynx and connect to
the internet. Usualy I lose the connection before I can start lynx
and when I get it started in time I still cannot connect.

I can ping servers and PC's my network and do DNS lookups of the local
PC's I just cannot go outside my lan.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I am at a loss as to what I have
missed or misconfigured.

Thanks
Greg Stucky

Hi all,
Where can i find the detail data sheet of Linux C/C++ LIB
documentations? (like microsoft MSDN)
When i hope to adopt "ioctl", "probe_irq_on" and so on functions, I couldn't
find any reference about them.
Therefore, i don't know how to fill in the parameters.

Hi,

I added one more hard disk to the Linux. I have made the partition and
formatted it into Linux File System Type.

The problem is that, how can I like the old hard disk to mount automatically
whe startup.

If I want the mount point to be /export, how to do that ?

Please teach me.

While installing RH7 I encountered a recognized anaconda bug. RH support
has
a fix that involves downloading another boot image to build a new install
disk.
The problem is that rawrite can't create the floppy from the new image. It
justs corrupts the diskette. The only way to install RH7 that does not die
is
a text install using a single fat32 partition as root. The result is a very
slow
installation. I trying to learn about Linux but this is not helping.

You could also ask "I can't really understand why people want to spend
5 or 10 hours trying to get a device working on Windows NT since there
is no help whatsoever for it, while it only takes half an hour to get
it working on Windows 98?"

Hmmm, I haven't had an issue on mine. I boot WinNT, Win98, and
Mandrake 7.2 (with Grub), all from BootMagic.

There are a few things to keep in mind, though, if you want to use
Boot Magic:

1) Grub (or LILO, whatever you want for Mandrake) must be installed to
fire up the kernel.

2) Grub/LILO must be installed on the partition containing the /boot
directory. Do not install it in the MBR, as then Grub/LILO will
replace Boot Magic.

3) If you have multiple Linux Partitions (i.e. / and /home are
mounted to different partitions in /etc/fstab), ensure that you select
the proper partition in Boot Magic

4) The partition where Grub/LILO is installed must fully reside below
cylinder # 1024.

In my case, I created a separate 50 MB partition for /boot, ensuring
it was before cyl 1024 (50 MB is way too big...just haven't bothered
to resize it).

Also, make sure that you don't place partitions for Windows after
Linux partitions (unless the Linux partitions are FAT or VFAT)...I had
problems with the partition table when I did that, as Windows became
somewhat confused.

Hope this helps!

Good luck,
Dave C

Add the filesystem to the list in /etc/fstab.
"man mount" and "man fstab" explain the syntax and possible options.

I am THISCLOSE to being able to use @home on Linux... been exploring,
trying things on my own... so after going through the proxy, making sure
my netconf settings were all mirrored by what my windows settings are
(took me a little while to figure out which needed to go where, but i
did it), found HardDrake, configurated my soundcard (it was there),
found my ethernet card, selected my ethernet card, brought up the
configuration box, made sure my ethernet card was selected, pressed OK,
and recieved this:

/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/net/ne.o : init_module : Device or Resource
busy
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/net/ne.o : insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/net/ne.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/net/ne.o : insmod eth0 failed

I know that there's one little thing that can fix this problem, i just
don't know what the one little thing is. any ideas?

Hi !

I'm doing a project for School and I have to setup 3 computers. One with
WinNT 4.0 , One with Win98, and one with Linux Redhat 6.2

Redhat is my Route and WinNT is my DNS and DHCP and FTP and So on Server.

This is a setup
Linux Redhat has 2 NICs
_______
| winNT | --------------------------|
Redhat| ---------------------------------| win 98|
                                                      | Router |
ip: 124.115.0.2 ip: 124.115.0.1 ip: 192.168.0.1
ip: 192.168.0.2

I have the DHCP server on Win NT.
and my Problem is that Win 98 can't get the IP form the DHCP which is on
Win NT.
when I config the IPs manually every thing works fine.
on the Linux box I have IP forwarding on but I'm not sure what else I have
to setup to make that work. If any one has any ideas let me know please

thanks you

Well, here is mine.
lp:\

        :mx#0:\
        :sh:\

        :ac=/etc/printer/log/acct:

Not clear which you want. /dev/lp0 is the printer port.
:if is the printer filter ( not sure what LPRng sets up.) This is the
main program which handles the printing, mx#0 means do not limit the
size of the job, sd is the directory in which the files are stored for
printing, ac is the account file ( you may not want this) lf is the file
where error messages are placed.

You probably should do shutdown -h
Find the file that shuts down your system. On SuSE 6.2 it is /sbin/init.d/halt
but other systems might be /etc/init.d/halt. Make sure that the halt command
is called with -p.
I don't have a Redhat install here at the moment so I cannot help any more
than this.

I am running a SuSE 6.4, now I want to upgrade the system to a 7.0. Since I

provided by SuSE. So I log in as a root, and choose to use ftp to update the

system can not be upgraded on a running system, so I have to create a
bootdisk for 7.0, and restart the computer by the bootdisk. But after I use
bootdisk to boot system, I lost my network connection, because the kernel
from the bootdisk does not run the dhcpcd client as I did in the old kernel,
so my question is that how can I upgrade the system by using the cable
