I've done just that and once configured, it works fine. However, I've
noticed a couple of things (that may or may not be avoidable). First,
tin no longer shows the number of unread articles in each newsgroup (in
the newsgroup listing) and it no longer shows which articles are unread
in either the article or thread listing. Apparently, it no longer knows.
Is there a way to fix this? I can point my /etc/nntpserver back to my
ISP's news server and unread stats show up.

Install it telling it not to search for you r video card and telling it
is just a plain svga card. Use just 640x480 to install. Do not let it
test your video card. (Use expert install if necessary). Then when you
are installed, you can play around. Does XFree actually support your
card (www.xfree.org)? If so get the new drivers.
Unfortunately your video card vendor considers it important to give you
Windows drivers which work, but not Linux drivers. Shout at them.
(Who in the world makes your card? I am afraid that if you get the cards
from minor makers, you will wait longer for drivers. Why should the
people who write the drivers for free spend time doing so for cards

Subject: crash during X test; gnome incomplete
From: John Hunter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 22 Mar 2001 21:32:05 -0600
I was doing an install of RHL7 with a Matrox 450 dual head card and
the system froze during the X windows test. I could not bring it back
with Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-<Del> or anyting so I powered down and
rebooted.
I then installed X v4.0.2 and the beta Matrox driver mga.o for the 450
card and got X up and running. But it appears the gnome installation
is incomplete. For example, there was no /etc/X11/gdm dir.
When I run gdm I get a primitive login screen: eg, no background color,
just the gray texture you see when X first starts up.
How do I complete the gnome install?
Thanks,
John Hunter

I'm disappointed to discover that the Gnome file manager in RH 7.0
doesn't know what to do with .mpeg files. (You can't launch a player by
double-clicking; it has no association for that MIME type.)
So: is there a .mpeg player that comes with Linux? If not, I know I can
use convert to convert it to another format- but what should I convert to?

I'm using LM 7.2
Is it possible to configure GRUB so that it does not display the commands
used to boot win98? Like:
Booting Windows 98
root hde(0,0)
(otherstuff)
chainloader +1
that was just appoix what it shows, I don't want it to show anything when it
boots, just the Windows boot screen can I do this? Also If I wanted to use
LILO instead of GRUB, how do I change this?
thanks,

Make sure you are giving the correct mount point that the install wants to use.
You my need to specify /mnt/cdrom/RedHat or something. I don't specifically
remember off hand, but this could be an issue. (i.e. the install is looking for
a certian tree and you may be specifying a differnt root than it expects)

I've had the most luck with mtv
http://www.mpegtv.com/wince/pockettv/#download
It plays slower (drops more frames) than, say windows media player,
but it plays.
There is also a linux video project with fairly active mailing lists:

You may want to try http://www.videolan.org/ as well, it plays well
and has fairly good audio/video sync.

Ok there are two ways you can use tar to put things on that floppy.
If you put stuff on there "raw", with no filesytem, then all you need
to do to put stuff on is:
tar cvf /dev/floppy <files and directories>
to take stuff off do:
cd <where you want to appear>
tar xvf /dev/floppy
Add a 'z' into those options to use compression and squeeze a little
more on.
Now, if you go through formatting the floppy and making a filesystem
on it, then don't tar directly to the /dev/floppy, because doing that
will overwrite all the filesystem information you just wrote.
Instead, mount the disk first
mount /dev/floppy /mnt/floppy
and then write to a file in /mnt/floppy, not /dev/floppy, just as if
you were creating a tar file in any other directory:
tar cvf /mnt/floppy/file.tar <files and directories>
tar xvf /mnt/floppy/file.tar

How can i redirect the output on system startup (which is saved to boot.msg)

I certainly souldn't share an irq with the soundcard. Don't know for sure
if its even possible.
FWIW, I set mine to irq 11 and then also had to reserve that irq for
"legacy" device in the system's BIOS before I got it to work properly
(was an adaptec boxed card, not with a scanner, so I don't know if the
scanner card is modified in any way or not).

Having tried to edit my XF86Config file to include some entries that were
supposed to enable my wheel mouse in Netscape and X I lost my configuration
and was not able to use my mouse in X. I ran xf86config and did get back
my mouse for my X-session but my video mode is screwed up and I cannot

there a way to run Lizard to set up my system without having to reformat

In theory there should be none. But both 'bigger' browsers (Netscape,
Internet Explorer) have crappy implementations, so the secure sand box is
weakened against perfomance and functionallity. But Java is safer then
JavaScript.

Hehe, but M$-Word is ok, I've written my whole PhD-Thesis in Word. No
offense to you, but Word is not that bad. Especially if you have EndNote,
so the endnotes for references really work nifty.

If you use LyX (graphical WYSIWIG frontend for LaTeX), the learning
curve isn't that steep. My recommendation: Try LyX, and then switch to
LaTex (if you want).
