I fiddle with Linux once a year, get tired, and go back to the enemy. Last
weekend happended to be the annual Linux-fest. I bought Suse 7.1 Personal,
and the only problem I've had so far was partitioning my hardrdrive. (I
think the BIOS was telling little lies about how many cylinders there were,
when I partitioned manually, no problems). My previous Linux outing was with
Suse 6.2, and it was more painful.
However, I can't give advice on the others, except that there seem to be a
lot of postings regarding Mandrake problems.

Subject: How to run a script before a kickstart installation?
Date: Fri, 23 Mar 2001 09:33:30 +0100
Hello
I want to do automated installations of RedHat 6.2 using kickstart. I have a
boot floppy with a working configuration file on it. The packages are
downloaded from an nfs server.
But I need to run a script, before kickstart starts, to read in some values
from the user and modify kickstarts configuration file.
Has anyone an idea how I can do this?

Just what exactly are you trying to do. Tell the exact commands. If
you tar directly to a floppy it is done using
$ tar cvf /dev/fd0 /home
You cannot mount this floppy. To see the contents, You must do a
$ tar tf /dev/fd0
If you want to put it to a ext2 filesystem, you should use
$ tar cvf /mnt/floppy/mytarfile /home
with the floppy mounted on /mnt/floppy.
Hope this helps,
Pavan

Well I am new to Linux and it's sure beating me up...
I loaded my system it wouldn't print.. somehow using the how to's I screwed
it up so bad I had to wipe the partition and do it again..
Finally with some help from these lists I got the unit to print.......
Then I attempted to install my ZIP drive on my own again.. and what do you
know now I can't print again and I can't access my Zip either..
I followed the step by step instructions and did actually get my Zip to
read....
I typed modprobe ppa, and then mounted it.... went OK
But when I went to print the step by step instructions for filing away.. no
printing
But I have to print!!!! what's wrong?? I went and tried to back track but I
just don't know.... maybe I should stick with OS/2.........
In klpq I get the following message at the bottom
"Host 'localhost' - cannot open connection to 'ps@localhost'- Connection
refused"
When I try to schedule the printer in WebMin it gives me this error
"Failed to start scheduler : lpd: Fatal error - Another print spooler isu
sing TCP printer port, possibly lpd process '567' "
I went into LISA and took scsi and ppa out of the kernel.. I thought maybe
that was blocking the printer port???
once I got frustrated and type modprobe ppa again and my zip drive started
and it actually printed one page and quit again.....
The I had to take ppa out of the kernel again???
Linux looks and feels awesome, but its got me beat..... and embarrassed
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Mike

After you mount the floppy, you said you tarred your root dir onto it,
Did you tar into the directory on which you mounted the floppy (i.e.
"tar cf /mnt/floppy/root.tar /"), or did you tar onto the device
itself (i.e. "tar c / > /dev/fd0")?
Hint, the first is probably what you wanted to do judging from the
fact that you created a filesystem on the floppy.

The make doesn't have much bearing here. The chipset does. I have a Diamond
Viper 770 32M AGP. Diamond doesn't have the drivers for it even for 2000 and
98 . Had to got to Nvidia and the get the Detonator 3 drivers. RH and
Mandrake both detect the card as a Riva TNT2. Though I have not had any
problems at all running X under either one.
So even if the name is different, a lot cards still have the same chipset.
Just have to find the right X/driver for the newer ones..

Hello,
check your /etc/syslog.conf
# /etc/syslog.conf - Configuration file for syslogd(8)
#
# For info about the format of this file, see "man syslog.conf".
#
#
#
# print most on tty10 and on the xconsole pipe
#
kern.warn;*.err;authpriv.none /dev/tty10
kern.warn;*.err;authpriv.none |/dev/xconsole
Adjust it to your needs and restart syslogd...done

Thanx,
but I still can't install db3.
Can U tell me wich db3 package did U install ?
Where did U find the files (ftp and filename)
Because I found a lot of rpm file for db3 , but they said that I can't install them
with a V3
Rpm.
And to compile rpm, we need a src version of db3 to get .h files.
Please, give me the package filename U used.

If you do a
make xconfig
next time you rebuild your kernel, there may be an option to incorporate
the module in the kernel permanently.
Note however that not all modules seem to be able to be built into the
kernel permanently, and with some modules it may be tricky to invoke
them with parameters if they are built in.
I've heard some stuff about passing parameters to modules on boot via
lilo, but as I use an Alpha box without lilo, I couldn't comment.

to upgrade rpm v3 to rpm v4
OK, I did ;o)
So, get files :
ncftpget ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/rpm-4.0.x/db3-3.1.17-4.6x.i386.rp=
m
ncftpget ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/rpm-4.0.x/db3-devel-3.1.17-4.6x.i=
386.rpm
ncftpget ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/rpm-4.0.x/popt-1.6.2-7x.i386.rpm
ncftpget ftp://ftp.rpm.org/pub/rpm/dist/rpm-4.0.x/rpm-4.0-6x.i386.rpm
ncftpget ????/libtool-1.3.5.tar.gz
then :
1/ compile libtool-1.3.5.tar.gz
2/ rpm -U db3-3.1.17-4.6x.i386.rpm
3/ rpm -U db3-devel-3.1.17-4.6x.i386.rpm
4/ rpm -U rpm-4.0-6x.i386.rpm
5/ rpm -U popt-1.6.2-7x.i386.rpm

Tjena Kristian!!
Run RH7 instead... i recently had the same trouble with RH6.2 on a Dell
Latitude CPi... so i removed it and installed RH7. Got no more errors on
the Rage Mobility 128 videocard.
If you have a CD-ROM burner, you can download the ISO images (a
bootable, complete copy of the Red Hat Linux installation program), and
the ISO images can then be transferred to two CD-ROMs.

By default, Debian only keeps a month's worth of logs (to save on disk
space). You can increase this by editing /etc/logrotate.conf (the
line beginning 'rotate' is the one you want - set the number after it
to the number of weeks for which you would like to keep your logs).

Add "ether=0,0,eth1" to your /etc/lilo.conf's append= line (or add this line),
if you compiled yourself a monolithic kernel, then run /sbin/lilo; this makes
monolithic kernel see both ethernet ports. If you are not using a monolithic
kernel, you probably need to make a new initrd as super-user
% mkinitrd --with=<your new network module> /boot/initrd-2.2.17-22.img 2.2.17
This makes a new initrd with the kernel modules for 2.2.17 (assuming you are
using the latest updates to Red Hat 6.2 or so), with your original modules in
as well as the newest network card driver. Now run lilo and when you boot up
next you should see the new hardware. If you just want to see the new module
in action, do
% insmod <your new network module>
where the module name is likely to end up in .o
Read the man pages for mkinitrd for more info. HTH -- BY

Hi,
I am running RedHat 6.2 on a 1.2G AMD Thunderbird PC. I have a SCSI DLT
tape drive that is successfully mounted on /dev/st0, which I want to set
up for daily incremental and weekly full backups.
I can only access the tape drive as root, therefore setting up a user
crontab for daily backups results only in an error message (access
denied)
My question is therefore a) should I change the permissions on the tape
drive for user access and if so, how do I do that? or b) how do I set up
a crontab file as root to back up the whole system?
Thanks for any help,
Janet
