I would suggest going to http://www.linuxprinting.org and look around.
Great site. I found it a bit of ordeal to get an Epson 777 to do both
postscript and nice color, but it certainly is workable. And that site has
all the answers. FWIW, I am using the gimp-print driver for images, etc.
and the postscript generated driver from linuxprinting for most
everything else. And with CUPS too. One nice feature of cups is an web
interface for managing printer, queue, etc.

I get an 'unable to mount ramdisk' error when trying to install mandrake
7.1 on a dfi motherboard, 700mhz amd athlon cpu(not overclocked)(slot A),
128M RAM, 30G maxtor hd with plenty of available space. I tried all
available install methods, floppy, from windoz, cdrom boot, all to no
avail. I have amd bios chipset set at optimal settings. I have done
installs in the past on my old cyrix p166+ machine with red hat 5 and 6,
caldera, and corel, all successful on the first try. thanks

Hi Karl,

I would try the ne and 8390 driver if you are using the 16bit ISA card.
I think the card you are using is ne2000 compatible by the way the name
sounds.

I just installed a drive with Corel Linux OS Deluxe installed. It hangs when
it gets to the start screen and if you select Maint,Expert, or VGA mode i
get "root fs not mounted" and hangs.

Also if I try to reinstall - the computer keeps rebooting. Computer meets
all requirements - the only if is a Sounblaster PCI512 soundcard.

Does anyone have a work around?

Subject: X Freezes After Random Time

Hello,

I have just installed Redhat version 7.0, and am having a problem with X
Windows. I configured everything for X Windows during the install, and
it tested fine. When I run, using the startx command, X windows, it
works for a random amount of time, then crashes--my computer locks up
and the only way to restart is the power switch (as in the power supply
switch). Assuming something might be wrong with the monitor settings,
I've edited XConfig86, limiting the possible configurations to a single
one that matches what's in the manual for the monitor, which is a
ViewSonic GT775. Once I've started X Windows, I can even check the
monitor's horizontal and vertical refresh rates, and they match the
allowed and chosen settings.

Looking on the XFree86 web site, I found this tidbit regarding the
Cirrus Logic GD546x based video card I'm using:
=====================
Try adding

Option "xaa_no_color_exp"

to your XF86Config file (in the Device section)
=====================

but it didn't help.

I logged all of the X windows messages, as follows, in the hope that it
sheds some light. Note the line near the end:

subshell.c: couldn't get terminal settings: Inappropriate ioctl for
device

which implies a problem writing a hardware specific command, but which
doesn't give me any clue as to which device had the problem. I also
found an old post from someone who had the same problem and he emailed
back to me saying he switched video cards and the problem went away.

Thanks in advance for any help,
-D

logfile from command "startx &>logfile" follows:

CUPS (tm) is the Common UNIX Printing System.
Not too bad. I use it on my Linux From Scratch
partition. On my Slackware partition I use
Apsfilter. Both work fine.

I assume you're using Mandrake, which I have
no experience with, but I believe you still need
Magicfilter or Apsfilter (or CUPS) to do a proper
job. See the Linux Printing-HOWTO.

Good luck,

John

I'm attempting to duplicate a Solaris v2.6 boot CD. This does not use an
iso9660
filesystem, but instead has some partition structure with a boot
partition, some
UFS partitions, etc. I tried the following commands:

# /usr/bin/readcd dev=1,0,0 f=solaris26.img

# cdrecord -v speed=4 dev=1,0,0 -data /home/SOLARIS/solaris26.img

Doesn't work. Anyone know how to do this?

This is a RedHat 7.0 system with a SONY CD-RW CRX120E drive (only
one CDROM drive). Things work to the extent that I can read and write
from/to
the CD-RW drive; the problem is that the result is not a bootable
Solaris CD.
If someone knows how to do this, would appreciate the exact syntax of
commands.

Thanx!
