Hello-
I am running RH6.2 (kernel 2.2.18) and am trying to install an external
SCSI Plextor Plexwriter 12/4/32. I have only one other SCSI device (sda).
For the CDRW: termination ON, SCSI ID=4, connected to my SCSI card via
68male HD - 50male HD cable.
My problem:
When I boot up with the drive on, it hangs. My BIOS recognizes the CDRW
just fine but during the boot process, it prints in the upper left corner
"PRESS A KEY TO REBOOT". When I do (and the drive is still on) it gets
stuck in the same place.
When I boot up with the drive off, it boots up just fine but consequently,
my machine does not recognize the drive. 'cdrecord -scanbus' only returns
my hard drive.
I've tried other SCSI IDs but no dice.
Any suggestions? Feel free to respond via email.
thanks
dominic

Does it test out end-to-end?
I mean, if you do dig or nslookup, are there any surprises?

Did you restart sendmail after adding this to local-host-names?

This sounds strangely like one of those subjects that comes out in
testimony years later, where Microsoft applied the right kind of
pressure and had it scrubbed. Try to find an IBM client loaded with
Linux.

Try to ping an IP. Type 'ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' in a terminal. If you get
an amount of time in ms your connection is up. Check /var/log/messages
to see if the connection is established. If the connect works you may
have a DNS problem.

I just installed Red Hat 7 and I am trying to do my C++ homework on it.
After I compile my files and type a.out to run it it won't run. The a.out
file is there but it won't run. What am I doing wrong?

I can't help it that your News server doesn't keep up with changes.
col.help does no longer exist. It's been gone for a few years now IIRC.
I don't care that you can still access it. Please look at
http://www.linux.org/docs/usenetlinux.html
for usenet groups that do exist.

That's a review, but you should be able to track down the cases
from the info given there. Of course, I'm taking you at your
word when you say you're looking for good cases; really good
stuff costs more than cheap junk, of course.

Hi,
I suspect it is because the current directory is not in your PATH. This
is 'normal' especially for 'root' as it prevents the execution of
'trojan' copies of commonly used utilities being executed instead of the
real one. For example if root happened to be in some user directory and
typed 'ls' - if the user had placed an executable of that name in his
directory then this may be executed (depending on exact order in the
PATH variable). This could have dire consequences depending on how
devious the user was.
To execute the program type
./a.out
You may want to specify the output filename as in
g++ -o homework homework.C

I boot NT from lilo, with LILO in the MBR.
The actual NT bootloader appears to be on the NT partition.

Keep your non-constructive, off topic posts out of my thread thank you very
much asshole. If you have something constructive to add, please do,
otherwise shut the fuck up, you're not wanted, nor appreciated here and I
couldn't give a rats ass if the group exists or not outside of my shitty ass

indicates that the group still exists, and I've gotten more usefull info

Subject: Please Help! strange problem whit my new ppp connection
Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 09:07:33 +0200
Hi everybody,
I'm not a Linux guru and I've this kind of problem.
In my office I use a Linux (red Hat 7) machine to share one internet
connection between all PC (mounting winNT)
I use an external ISDN modem working on only one line (64K)
I've configured pppd to connect on dial-demand and configured ipchains in
order to get all work.
I can connect to internet without any problem.
Now I've changed Internet provider because I need a static internet IP.
If I configure this new account, I can connect without any problem but I
cannot navigate anywhere, also from the linux box itself.
If I make the connection with Kppp, all works well.
So I think I've bad-configured something with pppd.
In my pppd options file I've inserted a line like this:
192.168.1.102: 151.X.X.X
Where the first number is the ip of my internal eth0 adapter and the second
one is the remote static internet ip the provider assigned me.
I've also changed my ipchains configuration but I don't think this is the
matter because if I use Kppp it works well.
If anyone as any suggestion please help me!
Please show me what kind of test I've to do in order to know where the
problem can be.
Thanks a lot for any help.
Fabio.

The message you see is specified in the line starting with "message" in
/etc/lilo.conf. In the case of Red Hat 7.0, the message being shown is
the file /boot/message.

I'm not sure how it's done, but the new beta version of Linux-Mandrake
8.0 (Beta 2) has its own graphical interface for LILO now, too. It's
smoother than RH7's (I briefly tried RH, but snuck back to my
original--read: newbie-friendly--distro). Oh, and it's blue. :^)

When you just try to execute a.out, it searches for a command named a.out
somewhere in the PATH. There isn't one. This means that you can add the
current directory to your PATH (it works but you really don't want to do it).
What you really want to do is just type ./a.out (this specifies the a.out
found in ./, the current directory).

Subject: Can't get X-Configurator Working on Install
Date: Tue, 27 Mar 2001 23:25:18 -0800
Guys,
Okay, so I'm trying to install Red Hat Linux 7 on my second machine (a dual
PIII 600), and I cannot figure out how to get the X-Config install working
properly with my monitor and video card.
I have a 17-inch Nokia 447X monitor (old but in good shape) with an NVidia
Quadro2 MXR graphics card. I've tried every combination of resolution
settings I can think of on the install, but I keep getting the "there is a
problem with your X configuration" message. I got Gnome and RH Linux 6
working properly (with an older video card) a long time ago, but I can't
figure out how to get it to work again now. (Also, I don't have the docs for
the monitor.) Any suggestions on what settings I should use to get this
working properly?

Subject: getting a Kernel Panic on install
Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 02:25:46 -0500
Hey guys, I'm having a bit of a problem installing Linux.
Right off the bat, when installing Mandrake 7.1 (booting off the cd), it
scans for scsi devices (i have no scsi, only 2 ide HDs), and then a
progress window pops up for loading ramdrive. just short of a third of
the way through, progress slows way down, the window eventually goes
away (without finishing) and is replaced by a window saying Initializing
CDRom. This window will stay up indefinitely. Ctrl-C breaks out of the
gui, and shows the error message that hangs it up:
Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs from 03:06
Additional information---
~ I try to load Linux from a Redhat 6.2 cd, and get the same error
message (though with a different set of numbers than 03:06... no, this
isnt intended to be a HD major:minor at this point), right after it sets
up the ramdrive (initrd?). So it isn't a Mandrake-specific issue,
although Mandrake and Redhat share vast amounts of code.
~ Search on googol.com for "kernel panic: vfs: unable to mount root fs"
shows dozens of people having the same problem, on all different
systems, all different platforms. (havent seen anyone with an answer,
however) If, however, you still would like to know, here is my setup:
Tbird 950 in a FIC AZ11 board
256mb RAM
2 ide HDs (nothing scsi anywhere)
elsa gladiac geforce2 mx
~ I've used these CDs to sucessfully install to these HDs in a different
system, so I don't doubt their integrity.
Anyway, it seems to me that the problem lies in mounting this Ramdrive.
Is there a RAM configuration setting in the BIOS that's screwing
something up? (doesnt seem likely) Is there an argument I can pass to
fix this? Is there any way around the use of a Ramdrive? Any other
ideas?
Any help is *greatly* appreciated.
Thank you very much for your time.

Subject: Hosed mbr?
Date: 27 Mar 2001 23:31:14 -0800
A long, long time ago I did:
]# mkfs -t ext2 /dev/hda
and didn't worry about whether I hosed the mbr or
not (I'd had win95 on that drive and wanted desperately
to get rid of all traces of it once and for all); I've
been booting from a floppy ever since and couldn't have
been happier. The only problem is, now I've got to reinstall
windows and am thinking that if I did:
a\:> fdisk /mbr
that I'll perhaps hose some of my Linux stuff (something
that I really don't want to do...I've got / mounted on
the first partition of hda).
I'm wondering if I can reinstall windows without getting
another drive.
What I'd really like to do is install windows on a 500Mb
partition that's in the middle of a 30Gb drive, but I'm
not sure if this is possible. (Perhaps I'll just end up
getting a new hd...)
Any ideas?
