Thank you for responding.
Partition table as follows:
Disk /dev/hda: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 58168 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 21 10552+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 22 58168 29306088 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 22 6263 3145936+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 6264 6771 256000+ 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda7 6772 23416 8389048+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda8 23417 58168 17514976+ 83 Linux
hda1=/boot, hda5=/, hda7=/usr, hda8=/home
I have data on hda8 that I need to keep. I could probably find a
way to get it onto another drive if I need to. I was hoping to
reformat hda5 and hda7 so that I would be starting clean. I will
try a text install, but I think that failed as well. I will let
you know what happens.
Dustin
Tried the text install again. I get a message from fdisk that
the partition table is corrupt. Skip disk. Next step is to choose
fdisk or disk druid (right back where I started). fdisk sees the
partition table as above. Disk Druid will not access the drive.
I backed out and went thru the upgrade option. This process
found the files and dependencies but I stopped before installing.
I am not comfortable upgrading MDK 7.0 to RH 7.0.

The chicken or the egg?? (or chasing my own tail??)
I'm wondering what would be the correct procedure to downgrade
from gcc/g++ 2.96 to the latest *official* release, 2.95.3
If I download the source and have to compile it, then I feel
like I'm using the broken compiler (and of course it's broken,
otherwise I wouldn't be downgrading) to generate the executable
code of the new compiler... What is then my hope that this
new compiler will produce correct code? :-(
I tried uninstalling first 2.96 (rpm --erase gcc, gcc-c++, etc.),
and use kgcc instead, but kept running into trouble (configure
would complain that it doesn't have a suitable compiler -- I
defined the environment variable CC=kgcc, and I even created
an alias: alias gcc='kgcc' -- configure would still complain
that the available compiler was not able to generate executable
code)
So, what is the right solution? Or am I not really chasing
my own tail if I use gcc 2.96 to compile gcc 2.95.3 ??
(Am I making any sense here?? :-))
Thanks for any comments!

Slackware distribution usually includes ZipSlack and BigSlack.
Both are in Zip format to be unzipped on FAT file systems.
Zip is an apetiser, Big is full distro.
Both are running slower because they use the umsdos translation of file
systems but for the curious they are a fine keyhole to peek to the wonders
of Linux.

Have fun.

I recommend going to www.linmodems.org. You will get all the
information you need there to make the best choice of winmodems.
Was there last night and saw some pci modems in the list which
were real modems. Good resource. Check it out.

What is so magical about partition 4? Why not use /dev/sdc1?
In any event, I used fdisk to explicitly partitioned the disk
to /dev/sdc4, and I then used mkfs to create an ext2 filesystem
on this device. This did not work, i.e. I could not mount the
disk on both machines (only on the machine on which I formatted
the disk).
I performed the following experiment:
====================================
The Iomega disks come from the factory partitioned as /dev/sdc4
(or /dev/hda4 etc.) and formatted with the FAT32 filesystem.
I can mount such a disk on both machines, but it requires different
mount commands:
[valis#] mount -t auto /dev/sdc /mnt/zip250
[ubic #] mount -t auto /dev/sdc4 /mnt/zip250
On valis I don't need to specify partition 4, while on ubic
I do. This must mean that the machines are configured slightly
differently. Upon booting, the device /dev/hda is associated
with the zip drive. I have two internal SCSI hard drives,
so loading the ide-scsi module turns the zipdrive into /dev/sdc.
The bios options on each machine are the same, as are the
/etc/fstab files (although this is probably not relevant at
the moment). Do you have any suggestions on how I can discover
the differences between valis and ubic?

Hello,
I just got Rethad 7.0 up on my HP pavilion n5270. X and gnome are
more or less configured and the video mode is okay. My problem is
that the virtual screen is much larger than the physical screen. I
have tried the Virtual Xdim and Ydim settings in my X config file
to no avail. My version of X is 4.0.3 and gnome is straight from
the Redhat 7.0 disks. If there were a way to automatically scroll
around the virtual desktop with the mouse that would be cool, or if
the virtual screen could match the physical screen that would be better.
Thanks for any help!

Hey all,
I'm having trouble with LPD and LPR. It's not starting/working. I was playing around
with the qt libraries,
adding and removing, so on and so forth. The end result is LPD/LPR no longer works.
Here's
the error message I get when trying to print

When trying to start the daemon LPD, I get this message:
Starting lpd: /usr/sbin/lpd: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/sbin/lpd:

Any ideas what's going on? Obviously it's having trouble with 'stat', but I know not
what
this is, or where to find it...

Hi,
Even if I use bootnet.img, I still have problem. Here is my situation:
I have a RedHat 7 installed on a PC "A". Currently I need to setup another
RedHat PC "B" via FTP. I copy all files in RedHat CD files into PC "A".
And then I make a bootnet.img to floppy disk, and use this disk to book up
in PC "B". I then choose FTP to installation method. The installation is
running fine and it can retrieve a file "base/netstg1.img" from PC "A" 's
FTP server. After receiving this file, the screen prompt "Loading
/mnt/runtime ramdisk..." and the installation process stuck there. What's
wrong with the FTP installation? I have tried HTTP method as well and I got
the same situation.
Please help. Thank you.

X - NumLock On/Off Revisited
There have been so many Linux users that have complained
that the "NumLock" is turned off when they start their X
server, and others who say it should be left off that I
thought a quick "NumLock" refresher is due. This is info
that I have collected over the past year from news groups
and email lists.
There are two basic ways, that I know of, to turn on the
"NumLock" when X is started. Both of these methods work
on my SuSE 7.1 system. Note that although they work, the
"NumLock" light does NOT light up. The keys work, the
light does not. I personally don't care if the light does
not light up as long as the keys work.
Method 1.
Check to see if you have a .Xmodmap file in your home
directory. If you do then add the following to the end
of the file. If you don't have the .Xmodmap file, then
create one with the following. Once this is done just
restart your X server.
keycode 79=7
keycode 80=8
keycode 81=9
keycode 83=4
keycode 84=5
keycode 85=6
keycode 86=plus
keycode 87=1
keycode 88=2
keycode 89=3
keycode 90=0
keycode 91=period
Method 2.
Look for the file ".../xkb/types/basic". This file is usually
located in /etc/X11 or in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 Use the "locate"
command to find it. It's location is dependant on the flavor
of Linux that you are running. Once you have found this file,
use you favorite editor (as root) and look for the section of
code that looks like this:
type "KEYPAD" {
modifiers = Shift+NumLock;
map[None] = Level2;
map[Shift] = Level1;
map[NumLock] = Level1;
map[Shift+NumLock] = Level2;
level_name[Level2] = "Base";
level_name[Level1] = "Number";
};
Now change all the "Level1" to "Level2" and "Level2" to "Level1".
That is just switch them around. Once this is done, just restart
your X server.
One of these methods should work for you.
Hope this helps. Hope this finally lays to rest the NumLock
problems when starting X.

If I have already installed RH7.0 and the GUI and mouse hangs after typing
"startx" what should I do to reconfigure my video card manually through the

is not a video card problem, what could possibly be the next thing to
consider?
Upon booting up with a boot disk, the system check shows that every thing is
"OK", but I still can't get it to work as one small window (gnome hints?)
opens in the lower right hand corner of my screen and that's all.
Also if I press "ctrl-esc" I can get the start menu and can make selections,
only upon hitting "enter" nothing happens.
Could someone please teach me some command words to try out so that I can
experiment with it?
Thanks.
Sam

Subject: XEmacs locale problem
Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 19:49:22 -0700
I'm having a problem running XEmacs 21.1 under Red Hat 6.2 with GNOME 1.2.
When I start XEmacs from a command prompt with, say
[robert]$ xemacs textfile.txt
there is no problem. However, if I start XEmacs from GNOME's
Midnight Commander file manager, I always get the error message:
(1) (xim-xlib/warning) Can't set locale.
Using C locale instead.
My $LANG environment variable is set to en_us. Beyond that, I don't
know anything about what XEmacs would be looking for here.
All help appreciated,
Robert Morelli

Be sure that the printer is setup to use serial. Many printers that
have multiple ports will only listen to one at any given time.

I'd create the /etc/printcap entry by hand; but first you should be
able to cat to the serial port. If that doesn't work setting up the
printer never will. Look into the manual to see what baud rate and
such you need, and then setup the serial port with stty(1) so that it
matches what the printer is expecting. I've done this before (we had
a 386 with 4MB of RAM running RedHat 4.2 as a print server with three
printers: 2 parallel and 1 serial), but the machine has been retired.

Do a ldd to find out what libraries it uses:
ldd `which lpr`
Then run ldconfig to see if the library is installed:
ldconfig -v | less
Install any missing libraries
