Can anyone please give instructions on how to setup the Linksys WPC11
wireless (802.11b) NIC under Caldera eDesktop 2.4 on my laptop? I've read
some about the wlan project, but I'm not sure if that's the right path to
follow or not. There's alot of documentation out there about 802.11, but I
can't tell if all of it is also applicable to 802.11b.

Hi,
My intall of 7.1 beta is failing right off the bat on a check of the
WP bit. I'm running a 200mhz Cirix which ran fine with 5, 5.2 * 6.2.
Can anyone tell me about the WP bit? Is this something special which
Cirix chips lack? Is RH likely to fix this?
Thanks David Kirkpatrick

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Vince Skahan)
Subject: booting hdc1 flashdisk into ramdisk
Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 23:33:29 GMT

I'm building a mini-redhat-based distribution for internal use
and am running into problems getting it to boot off of flash
disk into ramdisk without a boot floppy. This distribution will
go onto single-board linux routers, so there's no spinning disk
in production.

Configuration:
        /dev/hda = development system (EIDE, full-up rh7)
        /dev/hdc = flash disk containing mini-rh distribution

I've come up with a GRUB boot floppy that works ok, but need to get it
booting directly off the ramdisk. My floppy menu.lst file that works
so far contains :
        title flashdisk
        root (hd1,0)
        kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/ram read-only ramdisk=48000
        initrd /initrd

GRUB documentation is skeletal and incomplete at best.

When I try to install GRUB to the MBR on the flash disk, the
system displays the word "GRUB" when it boots and hangs there.

Lilo isn't any better, with it either coming up with "LI" or
just "L" when it tries to boot, so I'm obviously missing something
in how I'm trying to install the boot loader to the hdc mbr.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a o/s that runs
great, just can't get the darn thing to boot unaided from
flash disk.

Dug up: I think its the write protect bit in the kernel. It would seem
this bit was there as the system ran the other releases ok so possibly
this a bug - I hope.

Hello all -

I'm running RH 7.0 on an AMD 900 w/ 256 M of RAM and I tried to update glibc to
ver 2.2.2 with a RH RPM (using ver 4.00) and got strange errors. I tried with
both rpm -Fvh and rpm -Uvh and got:

         glibc-common = 2.2 is needed by glibc-2.2-12
        /usr/bin/getent is needed by stunnel-3.8-4

And other variants. Any help - TIA.

ok, i've witnessed many kudos for suse 7.1, however i can't seem to
install it. I wish to do a network installation using my LNE100TX
(linksys) card that works with the tulip.o driver. However, both the boot
disk and the module2 disk (the disk with the network modules) do not
contain the tulip.o driver. However it IS included in the suse 6.4
installation disk. What's up with that? Also, are there any SUSE 7.1 isos
for i386 out there?

Why not try with xf86config instead. Try doing a real basic setup at first.
I belive that your card uses nvidia drivers? Have you checked the card
compatibility list to see if you would benefit from going to X4.0.2? I
think you may. I would do something like run the basic xf86config
text-based setup first. Get a working XF86Config-4 file and then work on
things like trying out the newer NVidia drivers, etc.

I have not been overly successful with any graphical X setup program. I
always just use the ole-fashioned one.

Hi,

I installed ntp4 on a system and started the daemon. This cause 3
daemons to run. Fine.

Next, I install said software on an identical system and I have a
defunct process. This happened on a third machine as well, albeit a
different kind of system.

Any idea on how I can troubleshoot this?

Also, if I do get it to run, on the "time clients", do I merely need
to mention the ip address of the "time server" in their /etc/ntp.conf
file?

And if this software doesn't work, what other options do I have?

Hey,

You can do all basic setup (ie adding a new printer) from the web
interface. Now.. it sounded like you had the resolution for your printer
set low .. that would explain the pixelated output. You needed to
increase the resolution. I don't know how high the HP 690C can go.. you
will have to find that out. Now, it sounds like you are using the wrong
"printer driver" for your printer. Or you could be running LPD and CUPSD
at the same time. I can see LPD screwing things up with CUPSD running
also.. but I don't know I haven't heard of that. The stuff in
/usr/share/cups/model/HP/ are fine like that. Cups is compiled with gzip
support so that it can read those files.

It is a known problem, you can't overcome it, not without the source code.

The /dev/ entries are not regualar files, but special files. They are
created with either the MAKEDEV script (often found at the top of the
directory /dev/, otherwise in /sbin/) or with mknod.

Usage /sbin/mknod name type Major_number Minor_number [Options]

name is obviously the name of the device.
The major and minor numbers can be found in the file
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt or at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/docs/device-list/

For you it will be:

/sin/mknod /dev/hdc b 22 0 --mode=660

NTP is fairly complicated. It should only run one daemon (other than
ntpdate, which should run once and then exit).

Grab a cup of coffee and read up:

  http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~ntp/ntp_spool/html/index.htm

(I use ntpd on all my core machines, and just use ntpdate on all the
workstations at bootup)

mknod /dev/hdc b 22 0

`man mknod` for more information and see devices.txt in the kernel
"Documentation" directory for specific ID numbers.

(the entire /dev tree should be going away in the near future [and
good riddance if you ask me])
