Switch to a more reliable file system like reiser FS. The file journaling
makes fsck a thing of the past.

You are screwed and it sucks to be you :)
Here is the fix:
Boot off your Redhat 7.0 CD and do an UPGRADE (NO INSTALL).
Pick a small file (i.e. game) to upgrade.
During the upgrade, LILO will ask to create the boot floppy.
After the upgrade, your newly created linux boot floppy should work.
I would recommend copying that linux boot floppy.

If the goal is to install Linux in the space freed by resizing the NTFS
parrtition, this is **NOT** a workable solution. Linux cannot be
installed on NTFS, and Linux's NTFS read/write support is weak at best.
(In fact, 2.4.x kernels will not enable read/write support on Win2K NTFS
partitions because of changes to NTFS with Win2K.)
As somebody else pointed out, PartitionMagic (http://www.powerquest.com)
will do the trick.

Subject: Need help: ftp btwn 2 ppps and 1 eth on same PC
Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 21:45:14 -0500
Hello,
I setup 2 ppp (ppp0 with IP0 and ppp1 with IP1) connections on my linux
PC for a special test. The PC also has an active eth0 connection with 3.
I need to have two ftp sessions on the PC (to another PC with IP4 or the
same PC), one need to go through ppp0 and the other ppp1.
My problem is no matter how I manupilate the routing table, all the ftp
packet go through the last ppp comes up. Can you tell me any trick on
the routing table to force the ftp packets to go on seperate ppp?
The following shows my routing table:
destination Gateway Interface
IP3 eth0
IP_PPP_server ppp0 /* created by ppp */
IP_PPP_server ppp1 /* created by ppp */
IP0 ppp0
IP1 ppp1
0.0.0.0 my_default_gw eth0
The other PC (IP4) can be on the same subnet of the Linux PC (IP3) or
another subnet (via my_default_gw).
IP0, IP1 and IP3 are on the same Linux PC. Ideally, I'd like my ftp
packets between IP0 and IP3 go though ppp0 and ftp packets between IP1
and IP3 go through ppp1. If it is impossible, my ftp can be beween IP0
and IP4, IP1 and IP4. But the packets need to pass through ppp0 and
ppp1.
PPP0 and ppp1 are my testing targets.
Thanks for you time and interest.

I tried commenting both lines as well as different values for the virtual
and was able to get the scrolling to work, but it does not scroll around
all of the virtual screen. When X is run bare, the same problem seems to
be present. So I thing Gnome is not the problem. Are there any secret
config files buried in /usr/X11R6?

If an evil idiot creates a module and sticks it in
/lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION/ , it can be loaded by the kernel and
execute with full kernel-level access.
This is a rather minor problem because:
0) modprobe/insmod/rmmod refuse to do their things if a non-root user
calls them
1) /lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION/ is chmodded 755 and owned by root.root
2) If an evil idiot has r00ted your system, you're screwed even if
you're running a non-modular kernel.
I agree that competent admins should be paranoid. I don't think they
should fret overmuch about tiny potential holes like this when much
larger potential holes exist (er... the recent bind thing, ftpd's
hole-of-the-month, telnet....)

In my experience, the 19160 and 29160 work just fine under Linux.
Generally, you can expect any controller based on the Adaptec 7000 series
chipsets to work using the aic7xxx module (this includes all recent Adaptec
SCSI controllers, but not RAID controllers, and several other brand cards
such as the Jaz Jet SCSI card). You have Adaptec's unified driver
architecture to thank for this.

Hi, All,
This is really a very newbie-type question. I normally telnet into the
Linux box and do my stuff, like doing "man ls", the question is how I should
stop (or get out of the "man ls" thing) when it's at its end. What I would
normally do is "Ctrl + z", but that leaves a lot of "stopped jobs" in there.
I tried other ways, like ESC, Ctrl + c, but it doesn't work, is there
another way of exiting things like "man ls" and I am doing something
fundamentally wrong. Thanx for any input !!!

Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 03:25:36 GMT
Hello Again;
I have an IDE burner ( HP CDWriter+ ) and would like to use it in
Linux. I have gone through the directions in the SuSE Linux 7.0 Personal
edition 'Configuration' manual on page 122, and adjusted the item 'Append
line for hardware parameter' in 'LILO' and altered the file
'/etc/modules.conf'/ , but the emulation does not work. All I have done is
removed my CD burner as a CDRom.
My CD Burner is on ide1 slave with a CDRom as master.
I added 'hdd=ide-scsi' to 'Apend line for hardware parameter' and
saved my changes and exited 'YaST'.
I changed the line 'alias scsi_hostadapter off' to 'alias
scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi' in the file/etc/modules.conf'.
Thats all the manual says to do, but when I try to 'Configure'
'X-CD-Roast' it does not see the 'ide-scsi' drive emulation.
What have I missed?
Thanks in advance.

What I do on my RH6.2 system is just push the "Q" key. This ends
the man program and throws me back to a shell prompt. YMMV.

Try running the fully qualified command
ie. /path/to/file/apachectl
I believe with apache the default is /usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl but i

try the following link if your still stuck... Its not quite the answer to

My switch from Windoze to Linux is virtually complete (except for

sophisticated- just a simple check register would do.

Floppies for boot images must be perfect (no bad sectors) because boot
data is written to them sequentially (no file system). So 'format a: /u'
them in DOS or Windows first and make sure thay have no bad sectors.
And I believe that you have to use rawrite when booted to DOS (not a DOS
window or restart in DOS mode). You may need to use your Win startup
floppy for that (or at least that is the only way I can boot to DOS with
Win98se).
PS: The boot floppy that came with my Mandrake 7.0 was bad and would not
boot, so I had to make another one.

I found a gtk-engine package and installed it. I guess since the libs

The problem might be that ATAPI cdrom support is built into the kernel,
therefore ide-scsi does not work.
I had good results with both laptop and main pc by reconfiguring the
kernel with ATAPI cdrom as a module (in case I boot a different kernel)
and compile SCSI emulation (scsi-ide), SCSI support (scsi_mod) and SCSI
generic support (sg) into the kernel instead of modules. SCSI cdrom
support can still be a module (sr_mod) which should autoload if you mount
your writer (/dev/scd#) as a cdrom.
Then see if it shows up in /proc/scsi/scsi when your reboot the new
kernel.

The "man" program calls on the "less" program (or whatever is specified in
the PAGER environment variable), so this applies whenever you are running
"less":
If you hit "h", you will reach the "less" help screen. It will tell you
various ways to quit, and a bunch of other stuff you can do. To quit,
hitting "q" will suffice.
