According to Creative:

Will the Sound Blaster Live! work under Linux?
Creative has hired and trained programmers who are
proficient in Linux device driver programming, and we continue
to work on drivers for various products, including
the Sound Blaster Live!. There's no set release date yet.

that would work if only they shipped the alcatel speed touch home
an installer would come out first he would try a usb modem
if that won't work he will check for an open pci slot...
if the pci and usb both will not work an installer will then try the
ethernet modem
if you claim u have a mac atleast that would ensure the installer brings the
ethernet modem

Hi Peter - thanks for the reply.

I have been reading - as well as searching. Unfortunately, regardless
of the command line (maxcpus=0, nosmp, mem=128M) the problem persists.
The one difference is that there is now a line that reads:

SMP mode deactivated, forcing use of dummy APIC emulation.

I did not reinstall to try your suggestions. Do you think that would
make a difference? I did not understand your reference to the
"loading board." Please explain.

Thanks.

Hi Eric - I have indeed tried the linux-up approach. However, after
two weeks of dealing with RH Tech Support, I could not get the system
stable enough to act as a server. It would "loose" eth0, it wouldn't
respond to telnet, ftp would take for ever to login and finally, I'd
start to get incorrect shutdown warnings and drive scans. Reinstall
start over... sigh I was hoping I'd get something out of this
upgrade. Let's just say what I got was not what I expected from
commercial distributions.

But now you get to pay the $150 Professional Install fee to get that
ethernet modem. And when they show up and find a box that will accept
either a PCI or USB modem, they aren't obligated to give you the
ethernet modem. Some get 'em, others don't, and then they complain
about spending $150 for what they could have done themselves anyway.

Is your setup suffering from one particular problem only?
If so get patches 15,16,17, patch the source and recompile the kernel.
RH7 is/has been suffering from other problems, some of which you maybe
missing on more stable 6.2.
But it is your scalp - so beware.

Have fun.

Subject: Creative CT5880 Sound or PCI128 or what ever.;-(
Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 21:43:04 -0500

I'm not really sure what the hell it is. Anyway....

I just put together a new system. Consists of:

GA-7ZX MB
AMD K-7 Athalon 700
Onboard Creative CT5880 which I understand is the Creative clone or
whatever of the SB PCI128.

running RH 6.1 with 2.4.3 modular kernel.
KDE 1.1.2

According to the best information I can find on the web and elsewhere,
the sound driver and module I should be using for this setup is the
es1371.o from using information from Jim's Linux Pages, and elsewhere
my /etc/modules.conf sound section is set to:

alias char-major-14 es1370
options es1370 joystick=1

/var/log/messages shows it to be loading at the proper address, 0xcc00
and irq 11 with no complaints, when I load an application calling for
sound, a lsmod shows the the es1371, soundcore, and ac97_codec is
loaded(autocleanable) my volume controls under KDE with Kmix or under
Gnome with Gmix all show up okay with no complaints from KDE or Gnome
about not finding or having sound permission or sound not loaded or
compiled in etc.

My video cap shit, Kwintv etc with my BTTV drivers and stuff all work
okay. Beautiful pictures, pretty colors, etc. but no damn sound. ;-(

Hate to say this, but the god damned sound works fine under windoze with
everything, so I'm not needing some one to tell me to hook a cable from
one of my cdroms to someplace. I know it's all taken care of. ;-(

I tried sndconfig before I upgraded the kernel, and it told me that
there was an Equisonic card detected, but not supported by the system,
which is not out of range with my expectations, but I was hoping it
would give me something in my /etc/sysconfig/sound file to identify by
and for KDE to use. I don't know what identifier I should put in there,
but am using es1370, so that may be my part of my problem in KDE, but I
don't know that it should affect Gnome and everything else.

After all these years, and getting where I could configure my old Yamaha
opl3sa2 plug and pray with my eyes closed and one hand out of commission
I get stumped by this.

Sum buddy hep me out with this one.

Charlie

I went the "My computer has no USB ports. My wife's laptop has no PCI

I had the exact same problem when I did this upgrade too. (rookie mistake)

You need to run 'mkinitrd' to create a new boot image in the /boot
directory. Then make sure that your lilo.conf points to the new image.
