I'm talking about the difference in upping warez from your bellsouth
server vs say alt.net's servers. With one you MAY lose your news
account - the other...back on dialup....or the next broadband
provider...

Subject: Help with routing tables
Date: Tue, 03 Apr 2001 22:43:14 GMT
Can someone please help me before I turn my back forever on Linux.
I first installed SuSE 7.1 with two nics and tried to configure it as a
firewall/router. This is the setup:
204.83.38.x--->eth1(204.83.38.4)--->linux<---eth0(204.83.38.3)-----T1(204.83
.38.1)--world
As you can see I'm trying to set this machine up as a stand in between two
networks on the same subnet, which is supposedly doable from what I've
heard. Now here's the problem: From the linux machine I can ping any ip on
the eth1 side and any ip on the world side. From the machines connected to
eth1 I cannot ping any ip's on the world side. ie: from the linux
router/firewall I can ping www.yahoo.com no problem. From a machine with
204.83.38.x I always get a request timed out. Clients are configured with
204.83.38.4 as their gateway and can ping that no problem. Traceroutes from
the clients indicate time outs after reaching 24.83.38.4. Without getting
the routing working I CAN'T even begin to configure the firewall -which I
have clue how to do either by the way.
My routing table is as follows
204.83.38.1 * 255.255.255.255 UH eth0
204.83.38.0 * 255.255.255.128 U eth1
default gw.point2.com UG eth0
Now, thinking that it was my SuSe install. I reinstalled using Redhat 7.0
and end up with the exact @#$%$'ing problem.
ip_forwarding is enabled
I've read the man pages: net-how-to, adv-routing-how-to, firewall-howto,
ipchains-howto, iptables-howto and still am not able to troubleshoot.
I need real help, if get one more suggestion to read something I swear -
I'll shoot the penguin!
If this is not do-able just tell me so that I can move on to something else,
if it is, I need exact step by step idiot proof details!
Thanks in advance for everything!

Subject: Primary partition... on every HDD?
Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 00:45:40 +0200
Hi,
This question has always done me unsure during (Linux) setups, though I
never had any problems that could be derived from bad choice of partitions.
However, now I'm looking for an answer.
When setting up, for example Mandrake you may choose between primary and
extended partitions, both ext2. From Windows I know, the primary partition
is the first one, where OS resides, and extended is a container for logical
partitions due to some windows (or maybe it was FAT) shortcoming. So far so
good.
Now, Linux isn't Windows and ext2 isn't FAT, so what's the deal? Can anyone
please explain it to me. I have been looking for an answer in HOWTO:s with
no luck.
Regards,
/Haxor

So you know what not to do! So carry on choosing numbers imbetween until
you find the right value. It's likely that your bios takes a meg or so.

Good, so you know you didn't change the system default as defined
in man.conf ....
> I've tried to copy them to /usr/local/man/man8 but it doesn't work.
Oh yes it does. Especially if you add /usr/local/man to your manpath!

man man.
I refuse to help on a subject that is so self-evidently documented!
But as a hint, try it with "man -M ...... svc" first! And here's
some more help ..
DESCRIPTION
man formats and displays the on-line manual pages. This
version knows about the MANPATH and (MAN)PAGER environment
variables, so you can have your own set(s) of personal man
pages and choose whatever program you like to display the
formatted pages. If section is specified, man only looks
in that section of the manual. You may also specify the
order to search the sections for entries and which prepro-
cessors to run on the source files via command line
options or environment variables. If name contains a /
then it is first tried as a filename, so that you can do
man ./foo.5 or even man /cd/foo/bar.1.gz.
OPTIONS
-C config_file
Specify the man.conf file to use; the default is
/usr/lib/man.conf. (See man.conf(5).)
and then you might like to check how the man lookup database is
made :-).
OK .. here's another clue. Su to man, and then run man.
-w or --path
Don't actually display the man pages, but do print
the location(s) of the files that would be format-
ted or displayed. If no argument is given: display
(on stdout) the list of directories that is
searched by man for man pages. If manpath is a link
to man, then "manpath" is equivalent to "man
--path".

Yes, your semantics is way wrong. man xmodmap. You need an assigned
keycode first before you can remap the assignment. Try
keycode 22 = BackSpace Delete
(or whatever turns you on). Choose the right keycode for ypur board.

Formatting is like using the "quick" option in Windows (format /q),
clearing means writing 0's over all the data so that if someone takes
your hard disk they can't easily recover your files.
Your message is very very confusing! What *exactly* do you want to
do? Your first post already listed the commands people would suggest:
mke2fs (formats), and dd (scribbles on the data).
Honestly, we're BAFFLED. Your message could not be more confusing if
you had said "why doesn't Linux allow editing of files". So obviously
we're missing something important in the question.
The answer, if your original question was indeed the one you wished to
ask, is to take your sequence of:
change partition id to DOS by using fdisk
boot into DOS
format partition in DOS
reboot into linux
change partition id back to ext2 using fdisk
run "mke2fs /dev/whatever".
and if that does what you want, then change the sequence to do:
run "mke2fs /dev/whatever".
Maybe some hints here:
- Did you unmount the partition before trying to format it?
umount /dev/whatever
- Were you trying to format your root partition, which can't be unmounted?
Formatting your root partition is a major headache (just like
under windows).
- Are you giving the right device name to mke2fs?

upgrade pppd to at least 2.4.0b1.
If you are not using devfs, you must have the device file /dev/ppp

If you build ppp support as modules, you will need the following in

Change your boot device to /dev/hda. As it is lilo is installing its boot
record on your 2nd partition when it should be written to the MBR in
order to boot the drive directly.

Sure. When the server was in top shape completion and speed were
absolutely stellar. It more than rivaled commercial services, it was
clearly better. These days completion in now good again, but not quite
as good as it was. Speed is off a bit during peak hours, but great
during the day. There is interaction between the completion and the
speed. When the server is under heavy reading load, completion can
start to slip. But it a very good freebie still.
Given Bellsouth's now public admission that bridging will be
deprecated, that ought to clinch it for those who find this important
to them. How many will wait till it's gone before actually going
elsewhere is the big question. My feel is that the longer you postpone
the inevitable, the greater the chance that a change will be more
difficult or not turn out as well. Of course Bellsouth's performance
to schedules could mean that bridging will be around a lot longer than
they are saying now. But so is that news server fiasco that was
supposed to be cleared up by April 2000. I wouldn't count on this
though.

Anyone running a news server can tell who made posts if they keep
logs. They don't need a court order to read their own logs. They may
require a court order to reveal that information to interested third
parties, but plenty of them will roll over without any legal paperwork
at all.

Sure. But you might not even lose your news account on alt.net. You
will have to deal with the legal problems yourself, alt.net doesn't
get involved in that. They just surrender evidence. But everyone gets
a second chance there, at least.
All you have to do is re-affirm that you won't use the service in ways
that are against the AUP. In fact, I don't know anyone who actually
got shut off for warezing. They generated some posts that led to
complaints, the complaints were forwarded to the poster and they had
to reply that they got the complaint and that they would abide by the
AUP.
The tone of the letter is completely non-accusatory. They don't say
you did anything wrong or illegal, just that someone complained, and
if what they say happened is true, it might be a problem.
The only catch with this is that you can't ignore the letter. They
will send e-mail to your address on record and if you ignore it or it
bounces, they may disable your ability to post until you get in touch
with them about this.
But sure, posting something bad to a Bellsouth news server wouldn't be
smart if you could do it another way, even if you had to pay for that
other way. However, it's a matter of degree. If someone complains to
altnet, for example, they get your name and the IP you used too. There
is nothing to prevent the complainant from also whining to Bellsouth
about illegal use of the service. Check your AUP on this. It doesn't
say illegal acts on their servers, it says illegal acts using their
network.

You _don't_ want the filesystem mounted when you do this. I doubt
anything more practical than massive filesystem corruption would result.
Why you are going to all this extra effort when a simple sequence like
this would work (using hda3 as an example):
# umount /dev/hda3
# mke2fs /dev/hda3
# mount /dev/hda /some/mountpoint
