Apart from what has already been said, I'd like to add that some people
consider it a PITA calling 'X' 'X windows'. The manpage says something more
to that extent, iirc.

just for comparison (for use with a Highscreen optical wheelmouse)
    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Note that I use IMPS/2 instead of ImPS/2, dunno if that's a prob.

Maybe this causes your problems. You should probably remove the 'Generic
Mouse' from this section.

Overwrite it with GRUB, see their docs for how to do that.
Something like this here from within the grub-shell:
 install (hd0,3)/path/to/stage1 (hd2) (hd0,3)/path/to/stage2

Subject: Wintv, no sound with S-Video/Line-in
Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 10:41:01 +0200

Hello everyone

I am currently using Suse 7.1 with Kernel 2.4.0 on some systems. I connect a
Satellite Receiver to a Hauppauge WinTv-Radio and also to a Terratec
TV/Radio+. On both systems comes on the Videosignal without any sound. I
tried either kwintv and xawtv. There is also a terrestric antenna connected
which is working with Video and Sound. Sometimes it happens that when
changing the channel from terrestric program to composite that the sound of
the terrestric channel and the Video of the composite input is mixed
together. Is the TV-Card automatically selecting Line-in of the Tv-card when
I switch to composite1 or 3, or to I have to select any Audio-Input source
in the apps (can't find nothing in xawtv and kwintv's channel setup)? Has
anybody with a recent kernel a working composite video/audio configuration
running ?
At the moment, I use the Mic-In of the Soundcard instead of the line-in of
the TV-card, so its not so urgent. It seems to be a problem of the driver or
of my setup.

For the Hauppauge Card my /etc/modules.conf is having

options bttv pll=1 radio=1 card=10
options tuner type=5

For the Terratec Card

options bttv card=47 pll=2 radio=1
options tuner type=5
options tvaudio tda9873=1

Best regards
Juergen

The major and minor number are pointer to the related
driver in the kernel-space. If you have recompiled the
kernel check if you have added the vfat support, if it's
a module use modprobe to load the module before trying to
mount the device.

how does one upgrade from an older verserion of rpm to a newer one.

rpm -Uvh rpm* doesnt work

likewise trying to upgrade netscape has the same effect you cannot
upgrade with out backing up, remove old package and install new version
recover backup.

as netscape is looking at different packages and a rpm -Uvh --force
doesn't work

Hi, I had similar problems. As far as I could figure the soundcard was
not being loaded with quite the right settings.

Have a look in /etc/modules.conf. You should find something along the
lines of "alias sound-slot-0 sb".

Now try running "modprobe -r sb" and "modprobe -r sound" I forget the
order. This should remove your sound driver from the kernel.

now try running harddrake and setting up your sound card.

If this works and you now have sound (until you reboot) and can set it up
consistently with harddrake (just by using the defaults) then you can try
what I tried. That is to go into your sysvinit (I used ksysv) and remove
the sound loader.

Now you have it set so that harddrake will configure the sound card for
you and it won't be reconfigured by the sound configuration that is doing
it now.

Works perfectly for me.

Hope this helps
Cheers

Subject: X Servers and Voodoo 3
Date: Wed, 4 Apr 2001 01:12:00 +0100

Howdy,

I am running xfree86 4.0.2 on a RedHat 7.0 installation. I have recently
started using this with kde2 as my day to day OS instead of windows 2000. I
am very happy with it but have some questions about the speed of the x
server.

I have a voodoo 3 AGP graphics card on a barnd new motherboard with a
1.2ghz athelon and 256 mb of RAM.

If I drag a winodw around quickly it doesn't redraw straight away - it kind
of hops around following the cursor, and if the screen gets very busy this
gets worse.

Is there a better driver for my video card? Or is this what seems like lag
to me between kde and the x server due to the nature of the setup - x runs
as a sepearte program with the window manager just talking to it.

Can I stop this jerkyness or this something that can't be avoided?

Cheers for your help,
Mat Grove

While that's true of Windows, it obviously isn't true of Linux, or you
wouldn't be here.

Linux isn't Windows (thank God) and sometimes you have to do things
differently. Sometimes you can do it the Windows way, by why create the
grief for yourself?

Just use rm.

Date: Wed, 04 Apr 2001 17:45:51 +0800

I have upgraded my XFree86-3.3.6 to 4.0.2 with rpms for Redhat Linux.
But it does not contain any driver for my display card (SiS 6326) and it
can only use the SVGA X-server of 3.3.6 to drive my card. Is it the
XFree86-4.0.x rpms for Redhat does not contain any display driver and
you should use the 3.3.6 X-server as driver?
Anyway if I startx, only gnome can be startup while kde2.1 cannot. Even
in gnome I cannot run any kde application.
When I exit X-window, it cannot startx again before I reboot.
It said that there is error with the font path "unix:\7100".
I use the XFree86-4.0.2 rpms for Redhat 6.x.
Can anyone give some ideas what wrong with me.
Thanks for your kindly concern!

Sorry, but that's not a Linux limitation at all. It's a result of
the fact that the partition table itself can't hold more than 4
entries - up to 4 primary partitions, where 1 of these may be an extended
one.

That's a limitation that all operating systems have to abide, otherwise
the resulting PT would become incompatible with any other OS.
