Boot up in single-user mode. Add a "-s" option at the LILO prompt, as
in "linux -s". Then it skips most of the system startup, and you're
left at a command line as root.
Then edit whatever is trying to load your sound drivers and fix it.
Ie, it may be /etc/conf.modules.
Alternatively, boot from the RedHat CD (or other distribution) and
choose the rescue option at the first prompt screen you get.
Another alternative may be to type "I" (in RedHat anyway) when
prompted so that services are started interactively (I don't remember
if sound stuff gets loaded before that or not).

The dreaded RH7 Anaconda error.... This link will take you to Redhat's
site ( from there you will need to download the new/improved anaconda
update disk ).
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHBA-2000-084.html
OR, if all of the RH7 installation software is present on the
hard-drive you can boot with a dos/windows floppy and start the
install from inside the x:\redhat7\dosutils directory, using the
autoboot command... This will initiate the setup program in "text"
(red/yellow windows) mode, which isn't as pretty as the graphical
setup, but at least it doesn't crash that way.

I always wondered why RH advised users not to use up2date to upgrade
kernel packages... now I know...
This issue can be resolved in one of two ways:
1 ) manually reinstall the updated kernel packages yourself:
or
2) follow these steps...
cd /boot
ls -al
verify that the System.map-2.2.17, kernel.h-2.2.17,
module-info-2.2.17, and vmlinuz-2.2.17 are present and/or linked
properly from System.map, kernel.h, module-info, and vmlinuz
with ls -al you should see something like...
...
kernel.h --> kernel.h-2.2.17
module-info --> module-info-2.2.17
System.map --> System.map-2.2.17
vmlinuz --> vmlinuz-2.2.17
....
kernel.h-2.2.17
module-info-2.2.17
System.map-2.2.17
vmlinuz-2.2.17
....
if /boot looks okay, it's time to visit lilo.conf inside /etc.
cd /etc
use your favorite editor to verify the lilo.conf file, to make sure
that the "image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17" is pointing to the right kernel.
in my case, that section looks like this:
....
"image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.3"
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hdc9
other=/dev/hda1
label=win98
Just remember that if you make any changes lilo.conf, to type lilo at
the prompt, so that it initializes it's pointers for the next reboot.

Another quick solution is to stop the inetd Super-service from running using
the command (as root):
# /etc/rc.d/inetd stop
This will stop almost all services.
Then you have to read lots of docs and books...

Thx...for clearing this up, it could be a security problem to set everything

Well, I couldn't use Linux's fdisk until I got Slackware loaded
which I did by making a boot disk and then a root disk.
my hda1 partition is the swap partition 88 megs starts on cylinder
1-89
my hda2 I made bootable, but after setup the machine won't boot to the
hda2 directly I have to use the LILO disk that I created at setup?
now configuring X is my next project.

Thank you. That did indeed cure the problem.
Is "make xconfig" broken in some way? I haven't studied
the .config files yet, but it doesn't seem that the choice
of config utilities should be able to cause the problem I
was seeing. I wonder if the cure was actually the clearing
and reloading of the source. Perhaps I corrupted something
along the way?
Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Yes, that was the price I got as well. While they are priced so closely,
that make it even

well, there's this new "linux knowledge portal" provided by suse:
http://portal.suse.de/
all the articles are available in both, english and german.
that portal is done by using kinda **** dynamic-html via php.
really annoying! but if you have a cable modem it won't bother you too much,
anyway.
at that portal you can find the section "security".
there's an article covering your question in detail:
"(10.11.2000) Installation eines sicheren web-servers"
although it says "web server" it covers security issues in general.
you really should read it.
here's the link:
http://portal.suse.de/de/content.php?3occccccccccccccccccccmccccccccmcocccccccococcccccccccccccccc&content/security/secure_webserv.html
what the **** ???
**** dynamic-html!
same article in english:
http://portal.suse.de/en/content.php?3occccccccccccccccccccmccccccccmcocccccccococcccccccccccccccc&content/security/secure_webserv.html
at that pages you'll also find a couple of links to other security related
sites.
good luck!
