hi there,

I got a problem to configure CVS under RH7.Seems that RH7 use xinetd
whereas the previous/older redhat use /etc/inetd.conf .Quite confusing
to translate these messages into xinetd :

In the /etc/inetd.conf,I need to add this

cvspserver stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/bin/cvs cvs \
   --allow-root=/usr/local/newrepos pserver

But in xinetd ? How do i translate them into xinetd format?

need your help and expertise :)

thanks in advance

Subject: installing rh7.0, can't get beyond "/sbin/loader"?
Date: Sun, 8 Apr 2001 21:27:06 -0500

Hello,

I'm trying to install redhat 7.0 for i386, which I downloaded from redhat's
ftp site and burned to two cd's.

When I boot the machine with the cd in place, everything appears to be fine.
I hit enter to select graphic install, and it proceeds to load a kernel,
detect some hardware, do quite a bit of stuff, then hang at "starting
/sbin/loader" It will stay here as long as I let it, hitting keys does
nothing. I have to power down then back up (can't reboot).

I've tried booting from a floppy made from the img's on the cd. I've also
downloaded and reburned the cd a couple times. All have the same problem.

Anyone else ever experience this, and any idea how to get around it (short
of going with another distro)?

Also, what is the second disc for? I'd hate to get around this problem and
hit another similar problem on disc two halfway through the install.

Thanks,

Try

smbclient -LN pdcserver

if you know your pdc server netbios name.

You can also use smbmount and umount to mount and unmount shares:

smbmount //service/share /mnt/whatever -U username

umount /mnt/whatever

(I don't recall if it is -U or username - check the man file.)

You don't mount a tape drive, you write to it.
You might want to checkout these scripts if you are trying to use it for
backups.

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/linux/system/backup/backup-1.03.tar.gz

I think tape drives are usually:
/dev/st0 /dev/nst0 /dev/ht0 /dev/nht0

My SCSI tape uses st0 and nst0

xvidtune will help make adjustments once you get it running.

Subject: eepro100 under 2.4.0
Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 00:20:02 -0700

Greetings fellow Linux heads,

I've run into a problem with my internet connection under Red Hat 6.2
running kernel 2.4.0. I have a cable modem, and for months it was working
fine with my Red Hat 6.2/2.2.x setup. I then upgraded to the 2.4 kernel
when it was first released. Even under the new kernel I had no trouble
with my cable connect until about two weeks ago when it all of a sudden
stopped working. My computer is dual-boot with Win98, and the modem works
fine under Windows. The problem only exists when I'm using Linux. I'm not
that familiar with Linux networking yet...I fully intend to learn as much as
possible some day, but I can't right now. So, I would appreciate any
help/advice :) Here's what I've checked out in hopes of finding clues to
solving this problem...but I haven't had any luck and I am not really sure
if I'm even on the right track.

1. I've tried resetting the cable modem by unplugging the power cord and
then reinserting it after a few seconds. This does nothing.

2. I've checked my DHCP configuration and everything seems to be as it
should be. I never changed anything from when my connection did work, so I
asume this configuration is OK. I've read the cable-modem HOWTO and looked
at the info for my ISP, all seems to be good (unfortunately, my ISP doesn't
support Linux and therefore won't help me).

3. I've tried restarting DHCP on eth0 through pumpd--it just fails.
Likewise with shutting down and restarting networking.

4. I've searched newsgroups for threads on problems using the eepro100 NIC
card driver (my driver) with the 2.4.0 kernel. From what I have read, there
does seem to be problems with eepro100 under 2.4 . And there are even
patches available to fix certain problems. I've found a patch that I think
may help, but...um...I'm not exactly sure how to use the patch. I assume I
use the 'patch' command, but I'm not sure which file I should direct it
towards (I originally thought I should apply the patch to
/usr/src/linux-2.4.0/drivers/net/eepro100.o / .c but it just gets rejected).

5. Should the eepro100 drivers be loaded as kernel modules? Some of the
documentation I have read suggests that should be/are, but I'm not sure.
When I boot into my old 2.2.x kernel and run 'lsmod' I do see an entry for a
loaded eepro100 driver. However, my connection isn't working under the old
kernel either :( . When I run 'lsmod' under 2.4, there is no listing of an
eepro100 driver. I thought maybe I should recompile 2.4 with module support
for the driver, but when I ran 'xconfig' I did not see any options that
could help my situation. Networking support just has to be built in (which
it is of course), there are no driver specific options (at least nothing
pertaining to eepro100). So, I just canceled out of xconfig, I never
recompiled.

6. Since 'lsmod' didn't show any loaded eepro100 drivers under 2.4, I tried
to load them with the 'insmod' command. I got this odd message:
eepro100.o: couldn't find the kernel version the module was compiled for
...I don't know what to make of it.

7. I've grepped my logs for info, here's some interesting results from my
most recent Linux session:

>From dmesg:

Do the eepro100 entries mean that the drivers are loading correctly? This
entry is the same appears in all my logs, even when the connection works...

Looks like a problem with eth0...I have no idea what the VFS (virtual file s

Any help with this would also be appreciated.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific as to which documents I've looked at, but
I've looked at so many in the past 2 weeks and I can't keep track of them.
Most of my hints have come from docs at redhat.com and HOWTOs, as well as a
few books that I have. However, I can't seem to find anything directly
pertaining to my problem (my newsgroups searches at Google/Deja come the
closest). I just want my internet connection back. I'm nearing my wits end
because things seem to be set up corretly, but something is definately not
working--and the problem seems very elusive (to my newbie networking mind).

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Linux Gurus:

I have frequently used remote tape devices with "tar" on UNIX
machines. I think I have even used it from LINUX to LINUX
successfully. The usual syntax is something like:

tar xvf <remote_host>:/dev/tape

or

tar cvf <remote_host>:/dev/tape etc

I am having difficulty when the remote machine is SGI. On the
SGI the default DAT device is know as /dev/tape. The error
message I get on the LINUX box is:

sh: Host name lookup failure
tar: Cannot open haney:/dev/tape: Input/output error
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

Any clues to the syntax problem or what else LINUX expects?

Thanks,

Sounds like a DNS problem, setup DNS on the Linux machine or/and put the SGI
machine name in /etc/hosts and try again. There is a DNS HowTo on linuxdoc.org
you may want to check.

It shouldn't have changed a thing, but sometimes things go wrong.
Are you sure that you are actually booting from hde?
(You are if restoring the old MBR boots windows again)

Perhaps your best bet is to use loadlin.
It's another linux loader, that is run from DOS.

That shouldn't matter.

Thanks for the pointer. You may be right that there is a DNS
problem. However, each host has the other in their /etc/hosts
file. In addition the nsswitch file is set for file, dns.
AND if you use the command on the LINUX machine:

rsh haney "tar tvf"

it lists the contents of the tape on haney. Yet the command:

tar tvf haney:/dev/tape

results in this odd host lookup problem.
