I managed to install RH7 linux on my hard disk that's connected to the
HPT370 controller using information from this page
http://www.csie.ntu.edu.tw/~b6506063/hpt366/

at the end of the installation i allowed the installation to make a boot
disk and then i booted up again using the boot disk.
After booting up from the boot disk I typed

linux ide2=0xd800,0xdc02 ide3=0xe000,0xe402

at the 'boot:' prompt. Which is the exactly what i typed after the cdrom
booted in order to install linux.
I also tried adding the append(?) parameter

linux append="ide2=0xd800,0xdc02 ide3=0xe000,0xe402"

which also did not work. I always get the error message
Error0x10

Hi,

Sorry for posting again, but it has been three weeks, and only two
suggestions to fix this nonbooting notebook. One suggestion was to take it
in for servicing, and the other to disable the mouse in the BIOS setup.

Does this notebook require a good batter even though it is plugged into the
wall outlet with an ac adapter? I'm thinking that maybe this brand won't
boot without a good battery, which this one is dead, but plugged in anyway.

Acer's support page for this notebook (They bought Texas Instruments
business):
    http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/html/ext670.html

The Acer technical articles (all three of them) don't help me boot this
notebook:
     http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/articles/e670_articles.html

I've already got the user's manual and specifications notes, but these
stop short of explaining what to do with a non-booting machine, other than
"take it to a service person". I don't mind disassembling the notebook, if
that is required to
fix it. Maybe a loose wire or component? The note book does access the
floppy, CDROM drive, and hard drive, when setting any of those first in the
BIOS.
    http://www.acersupport.com/library/e670ug.pdf
    http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/html/e670cdt_specs.html

I'm not sure which error the owner's manual startup errors best describes my
boot error. The last message to display says "Press <F2> to enter SETUP",
but pressing F2 does not allow entry into the BIOS. To do that I must reboot
and hold down the F2 button. The clock battery keep time. Today it says
04/12/2001, and the notebook hasn't been plugged in for about thee weeks.
The BIOS is not locked, so I have tried these senarios:

Set BIOS to boot CDROM first--but that didn't work with either Win98 or
Linux.
Set BIOS to boot floppy first--that didn't work either with Startup or Linux
boot disks.
Set BIOS to boot the hard drive--put in a working Linux/Win98 dual boot 6
gig drive.
(The BIOS recognized the drive, accessing it also on boot, but still
hangs at
    the same spot above).

Subject: I'm cracking up!! Loadlin is unable to set network adapter's IRQ when booting
from Win98SE!
Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 09:40:50 +0200

This is a repost! I followed all suggestions given in
comp.os.linux.networking but the damn thing still doesn't work, maybe
someone here can help me out...

I installed Win and Linux (Suse 7.0) on my secondary machine. Lilo is in
MBR but aditionally I wanna be able to start Linux from Winblows. To do
this I installed Loadlin and the Linux Kernel I usually boot with Lilo on
my Winblows partition.

Now when I shutdown windows and select 'Start in MS-Dos mode' (I do not
use a DOS-box!) the 'dosstart.bat' calls up my 'loadlin.bat' and Linux
boots up. However, I get the message:

SIOCSIFFLAGGS
SIOCSIFFLAGGS
resource temporarily not available

and realize that my network adapter (Accton Cheetah PCI, Realtek chipset)
does not get installed. After login I used 'dmesg' to read the boot
messages and that's what I get:

rtl8139.c:v1.08 6/25/99 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
The PCI BIOS has not enabled the device at 0/72! Updating PCI command
0001->0005.
rtl8139.c:v1.08 6/25/99 Donald Becker
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
eth0: SMC1211TX EZCard 10/100 (RealTek RTL8139) at 0x5800, IRQ 0,
ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff.

So it looks as if IRQ 10 that the card used flawlessly in Windows just
before shutdown, somehow does not seem to be available anymore.
After a 'real' reboot I can use the card on this IRQ without any problems
both in Linux and Windows.

To me it seems that Windows does not 'release' that IRQ so that it's not
available to Linux afterwards. Is that possible?

For a test I disabled 'PNP OS INSTALLED' in my BIOS and I also assigned
IRQ to the PCI slot the network adapter resides in. But I still do not
get this IRQ for the network adapter. I even used loadlin to hand over
some initialization parameters to the kernel like

loadlin vmlinuz ether=10,x0d000,eth0 root=/dev/hda6 ro

or, to force a check

ether=0,0,eth0

but still no succes. Any ideas? TIA!

Bingo... Proof... The next time you reboot your system, immediately after
selecting Windows, press that F8, then select command prompt only... from there,
try your loadlin.bat... let me know what happens ( it should work with no
problems ), since the "Restart in MS-Dos" mode is just a shell ( you can type
"exit" from MS-Dos mode to get back into Windows without rebooting... hence it's
just a mode ).

Also, the i/o address, and irq... Are those the values from windows, or linux
cat /proc/pci ?

Hi,

New question!

Okay, after the keyboard and static shield it appeared to be a loose
touchpad cable ribbon attached to the motherboard. Snapped the cable snug
and it boots! I guess I was wrong about that technical article. Now that the
notebook boots I've got to reset the hybernation with pfdisk, or lpfdisk.

Can I upgrade this Extensa 670CDT with a faster Pentium than this 166 MHz? I
see jumper settings for the CPU and it is removeable. What's the fastest
this thing can run? Can I pop in a mobile K2, or PII?

Ciao,

Brian

Hello!

I tried to install PPP over Ethernet on my Caldera Linux System. I
downloaded the RPM File, and after this, tried to install it. I always
get the following error message:

Failed dependencys:
    libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.0) is needed
    libc.so.6 (GLIBC_2.1) is needed
Install failed

I tried to install the GLIBC Library from the Caldera CD but it always
said, that GLIBC would be already installed.

Please give me a hint, what i do wrong, and how to install those
drivers.

Greetings

Yes (this is not a DOWNgrade, it is a SIDEgrade).

No, that's what the instructions are for! If you have a problem with a
couple of lines, be precise about them, and what your problem is.

> say file not found, etc when trying to do the "srcdir/ config"

Be precise. "srcdir/ config" is not an instruction. There wouldn't be
any spaces in it, and srcdir would be the directory into which you
untarred the files, and config would be either a "make config" or
a "./configure".

This works, so as you and me guessed it must have something to do with
the "Restart in MS-Dos"-shell. Alright, but is there a way to circumvent
this? I mean, why does the PCI graphics adapter get installed properly
but not the network adapter? The problem is that I'd need this mode of
restarting due to my configuration:

my secondary Win/Linux machine is located in our basement as a dedicated
games server/mp3 encoder and it has no monitor, no keyboard and no mouse
attached to it. So I'm remotely controlling it from the Winblows machine
in my room via SecureCRT and PCAnywhere.

Curretnly LILO is setup to boot Linux first so I just have to turn on the
computer but I wanna boot windows first since I do have more games
installed that don't offer any Linux dedicated server yet. But how do I
get to Linux when I'm booting Windows? I can't control the LILO bootup
process remotely since I do not have any network installed when LILO asks
me to boot win or Linux. And when I start Linux first I always have to
reboot and tell LILO to use Win the next time. This is quite enervating.

Any ideas?
