If nothing else, you can run "setup" from a prompt/xterm window and disable
selective daemons listed under "system services"... While inside this list you
can press F1 or F2 to get help/descriptions of what each daemon is doing.

I just installed MDK 7.1 on a second hard drive in my computer. The first
hard drive is both WinME and Win2K. I use lilo to boot with no problem.
However, only when Win2K (no problem with WinME) boots up"F", It recognizes
the Linux drive as "G" and it takes a very long time for me to choose any
other drive to work with i.e. floppy CD-RW, DVD, "C"(winMe). I have tried to
uninstall the second hd from Win2k but it will still install the drivers for
it every time I boot up. How do I stop this Linux drive from binding up my
disk detection?

Subject: Samba - Strange Password Prompt (HOT/URGENT!)
Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 20:12:52 GMT

Hello everyone. Sorry to bug you, but I've got a Linux hair-puller here!

I'm at my wits' end trying to connect to my Samba Linux box via a win98
machine, but every time I do, I'm getting a password prompt. No password
I've got will work! I hope this isn't a dummy thing...!

Here are the particulars via RTFM (Mandrake 6.0)

1. smb.conf file modified for sharing and correct workgroup name (same
as the Win98 workgroup name, incl case); therefore -
2. visibility of Linux system in the Win box's "Network Neighborhood" is
present
3. user account created in Linux
4. samba installed and active
5. can access server via "nobody" logon (though access is severely
limited, the connection does get made, and displays folders on the Linux
box)
6. Logging into the Win box via MS Client, using the userID and password
established on the Linux box
7. Can ping either box from the other
8. Can access the Linux box from the Win98 box via Telnet.
9. I don't have it in front of me, but I'm pretty sure the Win98 box is
setup for a workgroup, not a domain (this is the default)

I've checked and checked my Linux settings, and everything looks
correct. Can anybody please advise me as to what I may be overlooking? I
need an answer by tomorrow (Friday)

Please respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and my Boeing address.
Please remove the "NO-SPAM-".

Subject: Any thoughts on a good Sparc Linux?
Date: 12 Apr 2001 19:01:41 GMT

I have a couple spare Sparc sun4c and sun4m boxes that I was thinking
of trying a Linux on. I come from a BSD background, and have not been
following the Linux sparc threads. I see there are a Debian, Slackware,
SUSE, and Redhat varieties available. Are any of these better suited to
a desktop or server environment, or is there any consensus as to which
might be better for various reasons. No flames or OS wars needed, just
some honest comparative insights beyond the usual install guide hypes.
I was thinking of setting up an IPX as a desktop, and a Classic as a
small server on the home net with the BSD boxes. Thanks in advance
for any suggestions or insights.

Thanks

   * Specify a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

   * Set the DNS server to 192.168.0.1.

   * Set the GATEWAY to 192.168.0.1.      *** IMPORTANT ***

   * Give each computer a unique name on your network.

   * Select an appropriate domain name that will not
conflict with names used on the Internet.

I am using Debian by the way.

Try this, ps aux | grep <what ever you are searching for>

for example, if you want to know if the telnet deamon is on, you do

ps aux | grep telnetd

Hope this helps

Subject: gnome doesent like me....
Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 20:17:07 -0400

After deciding to upgrade everything (based on a whim) i encountered
some sort of trouble with gnome. Due to the incompatibilities of rpm and
tar.gz format, i seem to have somehow installed 2 or maybe 3 versions.
To make this even more interesting, i accidentally deleted my rpm
database a while back (yes, i really managed to do that. cool huh?).
Right now when i type startx, it starts from the gnome-libs of
version god-knows-what in /usr/local/. i think these are the gnome-1.4
libs, but they might be as old as 1.0.55. The problem here is that
gnome-core and everything else, is from version 1.2 (helix-something).
All this has really done is make my panel unhappy and it doesent
want to load most of the things that were on it. I think this is because
its looking in the wrong place (/usr/local/share/) instead of the right
one (duh) which is /usr/share. gnomecc doesent want to play because of
the same thing.
I tried some sybolic linking magic, but that seems only to have made
everything worse. (I linked /usr/local/lib/<gnomestuff>.so to the ones
in /usr/lib). Right now, nothing will work until I re-link everything by
hand back to what it was. I have been running ldconfig after playing
with this stuff, so that cannot be it.
My question is: How do i get gnome to look at /usr/ rather than
/usr/local/ for all its nifty stuff?
I am running linuxppc with Xfree86 4.0.1, and i usually use
enlightenment (should this be usefull)

I have been unable to get the onboard audio to work with my Asua A7V133

The audio hardware is detected at boot time - when I try to stream audio

the background)..

When I log into the machine (using Mandrake 8 Beta 3) I do get the "login"

Any ideas?

Subject: Re: upgrading to 2.4 kernel and egcs
Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 01:26:06 GMT

...ok, I was too vague with my previous message, I assumed someone would
have gotten to this point before I did. anyway, yes I am new at this but
try to follow directions, this is where I am stuck, trying to get the
configure part correct.. instructions provided (which I am reading) include
these initial words...

                            Configuring egcs

Like most GNU software, egcs must be configured before it can be
built. This document attempts to describe the recommended
configuration procedure for both native and cross targets.

We use _srcdir_ to refer to the toplevel source directory for egcs; we
use _objdir_ to refer to the toplevel build/object directory for egcs.

First, we _highly_ recommend that egcs be built into a separate
directory than the sources which does _not_ reside within the source
tree. This is how we generally build egcs; building where _srcdir_ ==
   _objdir_ should still work, but doesn't get extensive testing;
building where _objdir_ is a subdirectory of _srcdir_ is unsupported.

Second, when configuring a native system, either "cc" or "gcc" must be
in your path or you must set CC in your environment before running
configure. Otherwise the configuration scripts may fail.

   To configure egcs:

     % mkdir _objdir_
     % cd _objdir_
     % _srcdir_/configure _[target]_ _[options]_

   _target specification_
     * egcs has code to correctly determine the correct value for _target_
for nearly all native systems. Therefore, we highly recommend you
not provide a configure target when configuring a native compiler.
     * _target_ must be specified when configuring a cross compiler;
examples of valid targets would be i960-rtems, m68k-coff, sh-elf,
       etc.
.....now, I have egcs untarred in it's own directory, and have tried a
couple of things to get the configure script to run, but get "command not
found". As I understand it [target] is not recommended to be specified as
the code will figure it out, and the default [options] are fine for me at
this point so I do not give options.

again any help is appreciated.

Subject: Re: partition size question
Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 01:43:02 GMT

Hope this helps:

The basic issue I have found is that you want to exclude your
customisations, user files, etc. from the OS. This is esp. important if
you have to a major upgrade or reinstall because you usually have to
reformat your / partition. You could try putting /home and /usr onto
your larger drive. You may want to put /var on a separate partition too.
I prefer not to get too many partitions because that splits up your free
space. However, I don't know a way to mount /usr and /home from a single
partition, so you probably want to do some partitioning.

Swap I usually set to twice my RAM. I put that as the first partition
and make / the second partition. However, with two drives, I'd put the
swap on the second drive. Since you have lots of space, you may want to
try .5G even.

That's my two cents worth.

You'll have to go read the Samba-HowTo... I don't remember the
details... The problem is probably related to the multiple
authentication methods which can be used.

Basically, for "secure" SMB connections you'll need to set up a
Samba specific password file and use the 'smbpasswd' command to
set up each users access. (Secure SMB passwords are transmitted
hashed so the system can't easily automatically sync with or use
the normal /etc/passwd&/etc/shadow system.)

Good luck!

I just installed redhat7.0 on my laptop. I have a pcmcia ethernet card, and
installed redhat using their pcmcia boot image. Within linux I get the
message "eth0: Reentering the interrupt handler! isr=0x0 imr=0x0" over and
over again.

During bootup it says intializing eth0 fails, but it also says it is
delaying it. It initializes the pcmcia support after eth0.

I also can't get into kde (can't connect to x server), which I think might
be related to the eth0 problem. Configuring X during installation went fine,
even got into it briefly to test the video mode.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

hi all

i'm setting up linux ... and having a blast. if you guys could help me,
please do.

i noticed that n4.72 did not inherit the gnome properties i set. i'm
guessing that's because netscape don't use it. i'm wondering if netscape6
does? i'd also like to know how does netscape6 's performance compare to the
4.7x series.

i'm running rh6.2 on pII, 256M and its faster than when it ran on windows
but still slow.

i previously used X-Win (on windows) to connect to my server from home. i'm
thinking this should be better on linux. to logon to the server i have to
user a SSH connection. how may i got about doing this?

when i did setup linux i chose to boot from floppy. now i'm getting to like
my setup. how do i change the bootup to load from the harddisk?

one other thing. if i compile the kernel to pII, do i have to compile say
gnome to pII? what's the recommendation on this?

thanx riyaz
