I have installed a number of RedHat 7 servers. The product (IMO) is good
and easy to install. The resources are excellent. So far no problems with
any.

never mind, I rebooted and now the problem has gone away.
My guess is that when you firt log in all the group that you're part of
get read, and as long as you don't explicitly log out again you can't be
added to a new group

Whoa there !
No need to scare him back to the land of Bill.
Just, as root, backup /etc/X11/XF86Config (no guarantees that the path
is correct) and run XF86Setup from the prompt. It'll do just as nicely.

Subject: Gateway Setup

Dear all,

I am setting up a gateway of a local network that can automatically
dial up to my ISP through an analog modem when there is a request of
internet access from a local workstation.

To do this, I installed 3 applications: "diald", "pppd" and "chat" on
the gateway. Now, when I open a page in a web browser on a local
workstation, the gateway can automatically dial up through the analog
modem and make a PPP connection successfully, but the page cannot be
received by the local workstation.

To check for the connection, I "ping" a machine on the internet from
my gateway and found it success.

For this, would anybody tell me what the problem is? If there is any
other applications and/or kernel settings should be set, may I know
what they are?

Thanks for your help.

Best wishes,

Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2001 10:14:02 +0200

Hi
i have problem using a Tandberg IBM 4100 tape on linux. (1,2Gb tape)
I want to use tapes that are of different size (QIC-150, QIC525 etc.)
but i have problems to set the right blocksize both on tar and mt
command.
i've got a IBM manual that tells with "density" value i must use with
different tapes.. but this is only for IBM AIX :o\
If i do a mt -f /dev/st0 status with a tape of 1.2Gb inserted mt tells
to me the right density data and the right tape.
If i do the same with a different tape (QIC-120 or 525) the density
value is shown as 0x00 and the tape drive is unusable...
Someone can help me about that?
There's any doc for setting the right blocksize /tape for this kind of
tape drive?
thx a lot :)
Alberto.

I am trying to setup a router also. To do this, I installed "diald",
"pppd" and "chat" on a Linux based workstation. It can now make a
PPP connection automatically, but packets seem failed to be route to
the local workstation. Therefore, I am still working on it.

I believe that your hardware can be supported by Linux and this would
be a good way for you to set up a route. Hope this can help you and
sorry for insufficient information. (I am just a newbie! :P)

I think that you have to configure your 'clients' to send their
request to the gateway, and allow the gateway to forward the
packets to the clients (activate forwarding).

It never worked for me... I had to tinker with the configuration
by hand, anyway wasn't so 'scaring' and if you never start to
look into the configuration files, you will never learn how to
fix the problems when these kind of 'setup tools' won't work...
(IMHO of course).

I had do do a reinstall of Windows Me on my laptop and it has blown away
the boot loader, so I don't get the dual boot option at startup.

When installing RH7.0 I stupidly didn't make a boot disk, so now I can't
get in to run /sbin/lilo again. I tried booting with the cd to 'linux
rescue', but doing a mount -a doesn't show up the lilo binary in /sbin.

Anyone any ideas how I can get lilo to run again from rescue or wherever
?

When you do the cd boot, and when you are in the install program, press,
ALT+F2, so you can get into a terminal screen. You can try to run 'lilo'
from there...

I was really interested in this experience, it has inspired me to try
again with my own linux-ADSL eth set-up. I have 4 PCs, 2 which are dual-
boot Windows-linux, and in windows all 4 PCs are in a peer network and
access the web via one ADSL modem and account. I want the 2 PCs running
linux to be networked and access the ADSL account using linux, but I have
tried intermittently for months without success. The linux is Red Hat 6.2,
and I have tried installing the Roaring Penguin ADSL software which my ISP
Bluewin recommends (they have no other suggestion). I have many linux
books, but cannot find a clear statement of what needs to be done. I
suspect my problem is my ethernet card is not properly installed in linux.

If I have only a USB keyboard and mouse plugged in during a

This is not a major issue (I could always swap to PS/2 ones),
