I have a Netgear FA311 and a Slackware 7.1 box (that also boots to NT 4.0).
I downloaded and compiled the source code by Donald Becker (natsemi.c,
pci-scan.c and other files).
I installed the modules natsemic.o and pci-scan.o in
/lib/modules/2.2.16/net/
I added insmod lines to my /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 file. Ran netconfig.
Everything was working great--for one day! The very next day it stopped.
Now I cannot ping to and from my Slackware box. I can ping to itself
(192.168.0.99) if that means anything.
When I boot, I see the normal message regarding natsemi.c and eth0. No
errors.
Here's the result of ifconfig:

I don't understand what could have happened from one day to the next. The
only thing I did was work on getting x-windows up--I don't think I broke
anything. Can anyone point me to what else I should be checking to see why
my networking is not working? Thanks!

You don't specify which version of XFree86 you're running, but
it looks like what you want to do is edit your XF86Config file
(or perhaps the XF86Config-4 file, if you're running XFree86
4.x).
In the pre-4.0 versions of the file, there are lines labelled
"Modeline", which entries give the server the parameters it needs
to operate the display at that resolution. Just comment out the
lines for everything except 640x480. Another way to do this
(and one that probably will be easier) is to go down to the
bottom of this file to the section labelled "Screen" that
corresponds to the driver you're using, go to the "Display"
subsections, and remove all the resolution entries except the
"640x480" entries.
Now, if you're running XFree86 4.0 or later, the file might not
even have "Modeline" entries, as the server contains built-in
resolution information for all the "standard" resolutions.
In that case, just edit the "Modes" entries for your display
and remove all except the "640x480" entries.

Yes, this is normal. Music CD's don't mount, as there is no filesystem
on them.
Stupid question time... there *is* an audio cable from the back of the
DVD drive going to the sound card, right? Playing audio CD's is not
done with raw data, the drive feeds audio out the back and it's up to
you to make the physical connection to the sound card input.
If that's done, run kmix and make sure the level is turned up on the
appropriate input.

You didn't specify which version of XFree86 you're running, or
if perhaps you've upgraded or made some other changes recently.
If by chance you happen to be running a version of XFree86
that's older (or newer) than before, perhaps the format of the
XF86Config file isn't appropriate. They did make some changes
to that file when they came out with XFree86 4.0.

Yes, that won't work. The XF86Config file just contains parameter
settings for the server, not any executable statements.

I agree, there's probably something in the one you're using that
XF86Setup chokes on.

You can tell which one your server is actually using by looking at the
log file /var/log/XFree86.0.log (I've heard that this only began with
XFree86 4.0, so you might not have one of these... if so, perhaps
someone
else could advise??). The latter-day convention is to put the config
file
in the /etc/X11 directory. I haven't used Slackware for years, so I
couldn't
tell you what they're doing these days. Sorry.

It means (if I'm not mistaken) that the loop.o module expects to
see a symbol called "kernelflag" and another called "waitqueue_lock"
in some other module, and it's not seeing those. It appears that
you might have recompiled your kernel, making something built-in
that used to be a module or vice-versa.

I ran into something similar once, and solved it by first removing
all the contents of the /lib/modules directory, then re-running
"make modules_install". This cleaned out some stale modules and
config info.

I don't think I can tell you what's actually wrong with your config, but I'm
using the same nic and never had trouble with it under rh7.0 using the
module (I think it's fa311.o )from netgear's website following the

Borrow the CD from normal box and install like grown-up.
(It is only 6 screws the cover, 4 screws and 2 plugs the CD, with a cup of
coffee maximuuuum 5 minutes)
Have Slack 7.1 on 486/8M ram 254 M hard disk. Only a; ap; n series.
No GUI.
Works.

What i planned on doing was: I have 2 servers one is the "live"
server that is very vital and the other is just a "sandbox" for our
developers to play with. Both have redhat installed on them so the
kernel was installed with RPMS. what i want to do is install the
AppleTalk module on the live server after compling it on the sandbox.
The only problem is that they are fairly different machines. The live
server is a dual P3 with 2 SCSI hd's setup in a RAID mirror set.
while the sandbox is a P2 with 1 IDE disk.

According to the man pages for XF86Config the file in /etc is read before
those in the /usr/X11R6/lib folder.
This is perhaps an untidy solution but I'd rename all XF86Config files
except the /etc/X11 one and work on that.

I have a machine with kernel 2.2.16-22smp (installed with RedHat 7.0)
and now i want to add a module to the kernel. so i went to kernel.org
and downloaded the source for 2.2.16 and did a make modules to compile
the modules. Then i tried insmod to install the module and it said
the module was compiled for 2.2.16 and i have 2.2.16-22smp. I know
that the smp allows more that one processor in the system (which i do)
but all i'm installing is the AppleTalk module which i don't think
that it would be that big of a deal. Can i just force the install?
or is it something higherlevel than that?

if you have an older machine (or if it is disabled in the BIOS) you
can't boot from the CD-ROM. This means that you will have to make a
boot floppy to start the machine. (this is like a dos disk) to do
that read the documentation. I know in RedHat there is a program in
the dosutils director called rawrite.exe which you run and give it the
path to the boot disk image in the images directory.

I've had success with RedHat and Caldera. From a setup point of view, Caldera
was probably the easiest. For an internal network for a single purpose it was
simple to setup and configure. However, adding new software was not so easy.
Adding packages sometimes gave weird dependency errors or just wouldn't work
quite right. Straight from the box you can configure web, dhcp, named, nfs,
and samba. I added Netatalk for Apple filesharing. This said, it's happily
serving files and web pages and doing automated backups without any further
maintenance.
RedHat also installed easily. I'm using it primarily as a samba/nfs server and
this was simple to configure (worked right out of the box). With the exception
of the onboard sound, everything was detected and configured properly by the
installer.

I have 3 RedHat systems one running 6.1 one with 6.2 and one with 7.0. I am
thinking or reinstalling the machine that has 7.0. I have been debating
whether or not to download the source code for the server programs, such as
apache, mysql, etc. or sticking with the RedHat packages. I was wondering
if anyone had any opinions or comments on whether or not to compile and
install programs from source or to use packages to install programs.

This is my first recompile and I think I finally got a 2.4 kernel
thats gonna work but it gets to the "Loading X Font" part and I get
"LSR system check engaged" and then nothing... It just stops and all I
can do is ctrl-alt-delete to unmount everything. Whats going on?
