Subject: HELP: Redhat 7.1 install error
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 20:32:41 +0200
Hi,
I just wanted to install Linux Redhat 7.1 on my computer, so I saved up some
money and bought a 'new' 3.2 gb hdd (WD). I downloaded both the ISO files
and burned them on a CD. So far so good.
CD 1 is bootable and took me to the installation menu. Keyboard and Mouse
detected (cordless). I partitioned linux using the disk druid and made a 128
mb swap file and the rest (I checked use remaining space) linux native (29xx
mb). I did a custom installation and checked most of the packages, in total
1.1 gb. My diamond viper v550 card was detected and also my monitor works
fine. So far so good. I finally came to the part where the files were copied
and installed. First he started to format both partitions (native and swap)
and then things went wrong: half way the status bar i got the error : "Error
writing install image to disk. You probably run out of disk space". This is
not possible, cause i have 3 gb of empty space and only 1 gb of packages. I
figured it must be a bad block on my "new" hdd, so i took another hdd (which
was tested and ok.) but the same problem at the same time. Then i figured
something was wrong with the ISO file and downloaded both files from a
different location. But after installing again, same problem, same time. My
configuration:
Intel p3-450 (slot 1)
256 mb memory
prim master : maxtor 8.4 gb (win2k pro is here)
prim slave : WD 3.2 gb (linux should be here)
sec. master : philips 40 x cdrom
sec. slave : philips CDrw
Diamond viper v550
Logitech cordless desktop
Eicon diva ISDN
I really want to install RH 7.1, so I hope someone can help me fix this
problem.
Hope to hear from you,
Grtnx, Maarten

Yes. BUT...
XL-486 or 560?
I had to get:
Softpaq Solution: SP1116
File Name: MOVEPCI.SYS Version 3.0
Title: PCI driver problems with Novell Server & other software
that manages extended memory directly
And install that into a CONFIG.SYS to boot via LOADLIN.EXE.
I have been told that this is not anymore neccessary since some
Kernel-Version, but didn't try, because:
>This PC has a QVision graphic card, and it is officially not supported.
It is; but ONLY in the commercial X-Server variants.
For me, it was cheaper to get a new (and more powerful) PC with XFree
than to buy Accellerated-X :-)

In general, stick to the MAJOR release for updates.
7.x RPMS in general can be applied to any 7.x release
6.x RPMS in general can be applied to any 6.x release
An exception to this is that RPMS for 6.x can be installed/used on 7.x if no
native versions are available.
Does that help?

AFAICT Lilo is not used; upon boot, the system uses GRUB, not LILO.

Without any more information about what failed it's hard to help. But I'd
try a newer version first. SuSE 5.3 is well over two years old now and
likely doesn't have support for some of your hardware. SuSE 7.1 is their
current version.

I'm in a bit of a pickle with RedHat 7.0. I installed a new version of
librep using RPM --force because it was telling me the newer version was
actually older (the new version was 0.13.6-1 and the existing one was
0.12.1-3). However the s**t has fit the fan and I was obviously wrong to
do this. It gets better. My boot disc seems to be corrupted and for some
unknown reason the dual boot Windows has been corrupted at the same time
(I'm at a loss to explain that one).
Can any body offer me any advice on how to updo this damage. If I can get
a working boot disc will I just be able to install the original librep
rpm? I'm inclinded to format the drive and start again, but I need at
least one working OS to pull off the stuff since the last back up.
Any advice wil be welcome.
Cheers.

Just turn off your monitor while it boots. When it is done, press
[Alt][Ctrl][F1] to get to the text console. Now, you turn on your
monitor. You should be in the text console login prompt. Login as
root. It may not work if your security level is set to high. If it
is the case, login as regular user then su to root and run
# init 3
It will switch you to runlevel 3 and proceed as the previous poster
said.

You can do the same with grub. hit E to enter edit mode and append "init 3"
to your boot command.

I'm trying to get RH7.1 and Win2k to dual boot off NTloader, but I've
had several
problems.
Number 1 is that RH7.1 insists on overwriting the MBR even when
instructed to write
to the /boot partition (which it correctly identifies as /dev/hda2. Thankfully
lilo -u works fine!
Booting off floppy works perfectly, but doing the usual NT Loader boot peeling
trick off the floppy doesn't work - when Linux is chosen from NT Loader,
I get
a rather unhelpful blank screen with "Boot failed" on it and nothing else.
Am I condemned to floppy boot hell, or has anyone any ideas? Oddly, lilo.conf
has a boot=/dev/hda, despite RH indicating that it's going for
/dev/hda2. This
isn't in keeping with what it was asked to do, but if it got it wrong once,
could changing this straighten it out?

Start with 'man xinetd'. Then examine the files in /etc/xinetd.d.

Hi,
I am using RH 6.2 on my laptop and have GNOME desktop. Since last
few days I am getting core dump in my home directory. After I delete
core file, next day I see core file again. I was able to find which
program causes core dump using GNU debugger. Output of gdb is as follows:
GNU gdb 19991004

This GDB was configured as "i386-redhat-linux".
Core was generated by `gnome-smproxy --sm-config-prefix /.gnome-smproxy-03jAlV/

Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.

I have no idea what gnome-smproxy does. Could you please tell me how do
I get rid of these annoying core dumps?

You'll probably have to set up the RAID before installing everything. One
good thing to do (I've been told in A.C.H.O) is to ghost an install and put
the image back after setting up RAID.

You should be able to use the CD to boot the system.
Boot from CD
At boot prompt enter:
linux rescue root=/dev/hdaX
where X is the correct partition.
This should work depending on if the file system is corrupted.
Mileage may vary.
