Thanx to those who answered a previous post, but I am still having some
difficulty.

I recompiled the kernel with sound enabled and no-sound modules. I
configured Alsa with the following
./config --with-sequencer=yes --with-isapnp=yes --with-debug=full.

Both compiling the kernel and building Alsa went ok. Then I edited
/etc/modules.conf with the following

alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ens1371
options snd-card-interwave snd_index=0

alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

Then I did the following: (Suggest by the ALSA Install guide and faq)
modprobe snd-card-ens1371
modprobe snd-pcm-oss
modprobe snd-mixer-oss

But still I have no sound.

A cat of /proc/modules:

snd-mixer-oss 4288 0 (autoclean)
snd-card-ens1371 2304 0 (autoclean)

snd-timer 11104 0 (autoclean) [snd-pcm]
snd-rawmidi 10848 0 (autoclean) [snd-ens1371]

snd 41696 1 (autoclean) [snd-mixer-oss
snd-card-ens1371 snd-ens1371

Any help is greatly appreciated.

i haven't really got a clue but sometimes I get lucky with this sort of

Do you turn the sound on with alsamixer?

Note the default is sound is off with the alsa drivers.

Just a thought.

Transparent proxying is pretty pointless because for larges sites that
have many A records (most popular sites will), your hit rate will be
divided by the number of A records they have.

My suggestion would be to redirect to a webpage that explains how to
setup your proxy server or just block port 80.

As for firewall rules, just make sure squid can access outside sites.
And also make sure squid isn't listening on an outside interface. I
think you do this with tcp_incoming_address and upd_incoming_address (in
squid.conf). Set those to the IP address that your clients will access
the proxy server as (the IP address of eth0 in most cases).

I believe about the only difference between you an I, which I can see,
right now is that you compiled without the --with-oss=yes set on
./configure, and possibly enabled sound built into the kernel instead of
choosing sound support as a module.

I wound up finally with the alsa-driver-0.5.10b, alsa-lib-0.5.10b and
alsa-utils-0.5.10, and by linking my 2.4.3 kernel build directory as
/usr/src/linux, I got the drivers, libs and utils to all build. That is
on a RH 6.1 glibc21 system.

Alsa seems to not understand the new 2.4.x kernels module directory
structure and puts, if I remember correctly, the new drivers in a
/lib/modules/2.4.3/misc directory instead of in the
/lib/modules/2.4.3/kernel/drivers/sound directory. (or was that on
Peanut Linux w/2.2.19 kernel) don't quote me for sure on that last
sentence. You'll just have to play it by ear on your system.

Anyway, it will put an option in your ntsysv setup for starting alsa on
system startup also. Or at least it did on mine.

The following in my /etc/modules.conf:

alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ens1371
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss

alias char-major-81-0 bttv

One other think, I did compile the kernel with the isapnp as a module.

With the above configuration in /etc/modules.conf sound seems to come up
when I need it and I've got stereo sound in Linux with my TV and gradio

Hope you can find something of value in the above mess.

Hi folks, I have a Presario 1700 with Linux RH 7.0 on it and everything
is working just fine besides the network (and modem) connection.

After some reseach I found out that my ethernet nic is a CONEXANT. I
browsed through many sites looking for some suitable kernel module as a
driver. No clue...

I have tried many drivers just randomly without success.

Finally (and sadly) I came to the decision that I need to invest in a
PCMCIA, plug it in and get hooked up to the net. Now I find myself
drowned in an ocean of information and don't know what to buy exactly. I
would like to have a combo Ethernet/Modem with the less painul
installation, not exactlya a plug and play thing, but something that has
been tested and is guaranteed by experience to work.

Any suggestions?

Please CC me the reply as I rarely have the chance to browse through the
newsgroups.

Check out Qmail http://www.qmail.com
It can be setup similarly using one of the programs on the qmail

Hmmm. Perhaps RedHat changed this option?
They used to have it. It don't have a 7.1 CD at hand right now, so I can't
try
what it is.
You can get a rescue disc from the web (toms boot/root disk eg.) and start a
resue system from there. Boot from it, and supply a "linux root=/dev/hda3"
option to the lilo prompt.

You left out the quotes? There's a screen full of options (expert,

Subject: HELP: cannot install Mandrake 8.0 on Sony Vaio PCG-FX120 laptop
Date: Fri, 27 Apr 2001 22:22:30 -0700

Help - I'm having trouble getting Linux Mandrake 8.0 up and running on this
machine.

Sony Vaio PCG-FX120 Laptop
Intel 815em chipset
Pentium III 700Mhz (SpeedStep)
192 MB PC100 SODIMM
20 GB Fujitsu hard drive
6x Toshiba DVD-ROM
13.3" SVGA (1024x768) LCD, Intel 815em integrated AGP 2D/3D accelerator
Ricoh RL5C476 CardBus/PCMCIA controller
Intel 815em Integrated 10/100 Ethernet (82557 compatible)
Alps GlidePoint touchpad

I am trying to install Linux Mandrake 8.0 (Traktopel). This is the final
release.

Using the standard (graphical) installer, everything goes well until the
"Detecting PCMCIA" phase, at which point the system totally freezes up --
no response to keyboard, mouse, etc.

I booted the installer in text (expert) mode, to see more of what is going
on, and I discovered that the PCMCIA probe was in fact causing a kernel
panic.

I believe I can get the installation going if I disable PCMCIA detection
during the installer. Unfortunately I can't find a way to do this! Even
the "expert" mode won't let me turn off PCMCIA auto-detection! (It lets me
tune and/or disable just about everything else tho!)

Now, I *was* able to get RedHat 7.1 up and running on this machine (even
the PCMCIA detection worked perfectly!), but I would much rather run Mandrake,
because quite frankly, I like it better than DeadHat.

Can anyone offer some help? Words of wisdom? A prayer or two? Money?
(hey, I had to try!) You will not only earn my undying gratitude, but you'll
also earn my SO's undying gratitude for putting my mind at ease!!! (this
has been driving me NUTS this week)

Please reply. Thanks!
