Hello,
I have problems with suse 7.1 and my new computer, a DELL Dimension 8100
(P4, chipet i850).
When i launch two process, only one works (the last launched) and stops
(freeze) the other one. So, the time shared is no more....
Do you have any solutions or clues? any adresses to get answers?
Thanks!

Hi,
we need to create a customized linux (linux + our app) installation
on a cdrom. when that cdrom is given to a user , a new install of linux
+ our app should take place. Can u please throw some light on this?
iam able to do these steps
1 - build latest kernel image wiht ram disk support (floppy 1)
2 - create a root file system.(floppy 2)
how to specify the kernel to take the root file system from the floppy
2?
Thanx

I use redhat on a couple of my systems and usually take their ISO and
burn it to CD so that I have an original for a backup, then copy the
files back to hard drive and remove some of the RPMS that I don't want
or need and replace them with the updates and or other programs that I
want. Then edit the "comps" file to remove the files that I deleted and
add the ones I added or replaced then run the updatehdlist script then
all that is left is to make an ISO saving the file permissions.
Anyways this link might help. It tells how to make a bootable CD.
http://imsb.au.dk/~mok/linux/doc/RedHat-CD.html
Hope this helps.

Subject: Problems using the initrd
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 09:51:13 +0200
I want to build up my own Linux-Bootdisk. I have read that I can use the
initrd for Filesystem in the Ramdisk. So I created a file and used
mkfs.minix on it. After that I mounted it as loop device copied all needed
files (mainly busybox). I have also created a dev directory with a file
(created by makedev ) tty1. After that I build my own Kernel (2.2.19). Then
I installed syslinux on the floppy. Copied all files which are needed
(including the gziped minix image). The disk boots quite well until the
Kernel is ready and the execution of linuxrc should start. The kernel tells
me following: No inital console found .. No init found.. . After the the
system stops.
1.) What I have done wrong???
2.) What can be done better???
3.) In the Linux Router Project I have seen there is no filesystem image
used for the root files they use a tgz file. How can I do that the kernel is
always complaining about the Filesystem which is used in root.tgz??
Thanks to all

Include noauto in the options above (I don't think umask does anything for
FAT partitions), and have the user that wants to write to it mount it.

Take a look through the PPP-HOWTO located at http://www.linuxdoc.org. It
provides some helpful hints on how to deal with these situations. You may
also want to provide a "-v" to the chat script that you are using to see what
prompts you are getting back from your ISP to make sure that the
authentication is taking place at the appropriate point in time.
See ya

Perhaps install an older version and use the new RH to upgrade
that install. Perhaps that will succeed.

Hi,
I have just upgrated my linux (Mdk 7.2 -> Mdk 8). Before everything was
ok but now i have a big problem.
Before to explain it, This is my Configuration :
Dell Laptitude with PCMCIA Xircom (Ethernet + modem card), wtih three
kernels (2.4.3 and 2.2.19-10 from Mdk 8 and 2.2.17-21 from Mdk 7.2)
The problem :
Under kernels 2.4.3 and 2.2.19-10 my ethernet card does not work (but it
works with the 2.2.17 kernel). With the 2.4.3 kernel the system writes
that it can not load ds.o.gz module, and it displays the following error
messages :
init_module : operation not permitted
Hint:insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
inluding invalid IO or ICQ parameters
When I read the /var/log/message file I have the following errors :

Getting 'ppp' to work can be difficult the first time, but once you have got
it sorted it becomes easy.
I have a script called 'isp' which starts my connection, I just issue isp
btfree start. There are a number of files you need to check
/etc/resolv.conf - put in your dns entries
/etc/ppp/abc - file used issue commands to the modem
/etc/ppp/peers/abc - pppd options
/etc/ppp/chap-secrets - needed if your isp uses chap protocol
I do not have the files I use here, but if you email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], I can send you the files I use.

Yes, it is. There's no use in being able to run X if you can't run any
apps worth it. Unless you're using it as an X terminal, you're not going
to be able to "use" it for anything you can't do from a prompt. The only
things you NEED X for as far as I can tell are graphic websurfing (the
only really light graphic webbrowsers show about as much as lynx, which
is a pretty darn nice webbrowser btw), graphics editing (no way you're
doing that with 8 megs, besides, basic editing/converting can be done
from the prompt), office apps (too heavy), various analysis software
(also too heavy), and X-based games (my pII with 128 megs ram is too
slow for a lot of X games).
I suppose though, that if you have the patience of the dalai lama you
can probably find uses for X on an 8 meg machine.
But that's all not so important. You can do a LOT from the prompt.

Yes, I've heard this and read various arguments on this topic on the
groups for a while. However, I've always put the kernel source into
/usr/src/linux, and have never had a problem compiling or running a
kernel done in this fashion. I move the source for the currently-
running kernel to a separate directory (say, /usr/src/linux-2.2.17),
unpack the new source (which usually unpacks itself into a directory
called "linux" anyway), move that into a directory based on its
version as well (say, /usr/src/linux-2.4.3), then make a symbolic link
from that directory to /usr/src/linux. I've never had a problem doing
this.
I did have a problem, however, in that my Red Hat machine, rather than
putting a symbolic link from /usr/src/linux/include/linux to
/usr/include/linux to get the proper kernel version files, simply
put some include files in a /usr/include/linux directory that it had
set up. (Likewise with /usr/include/asm.) When I upgraded the kernel
source, this resulted in my having the incorrect kernel headers
available to builds. I had to fix that, but that was minor.

The better way to do it, and a way that will avoid the problems you
mention, is simply to change the two instances of "gcc" in the Makefile
to "kgcc". One says:
HOSTCC = gcc
The other says:
CC = $(CROSS_COMPILE)gcc
Change the "gcc" in both of those lines to say "kgcc", and you're set.
Don't change the
CROSS_COMPILE =
line; you're not cross-compiling the kernel anyway, so don't mess with
it.

Best option is to attach the drives to the standard onboard ide
controller and install the operating system. Then upgrade to kernel
2.4.x or add the ide-patches from www.linux-ide.org to a 2.2.x kernel.
Compile the kernel, and after you determine that the kernel is working
correctly and detecting the promise controller switch the cables to
the promise controller.
Make sure that you check the option in the kernel to use second ide
controller first. See the ide.txt under in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation for details.
Another option is check to see if you caldera will allow you to make a
custom kernel for installation. Make a kernel with promise ide
support, and install. This is your only option if you only have
a promise ide controller. The distribution that I used allowed this
option.
Good luck.

Subject: Help: dhat 7.1 kernel fails to boot after compiling
Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 12:58:52 GMT
Hi there,
I'd like to apply a simple security patch. But I
am stuck with a simple re-building the redhat 7.1's
2.4.2-2 kernel. After a successful compiling and
installation, rebooting with the newly built kernel
stops at the following point:
Loading linux ........
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
The same machine (a pentium 166 clone) works fine
with a fresh Redhat 7.1 installation. And here are
what I did to re-build the kernel.
Under /usr/src/linux-2.4.2, without applying any
patch,
1) make mrproper
2) make menuconfig, and save the default config
without any change
3) make dep
4) make clean
5) Edit Makefile to change EXTRAVERSION to -2-p1
6) make bzImage
7) make modules
8) make modules_install
9) /sbin/lilo -v, after adding a new record pointing
to newly built /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2-2-p1
Any advices, please.
Thank you in advance.
