I am trying to setup tftp-server using RedHat 7.0. After working on the =
configuration with no success, I discovered
that there are some known issues with tftp-server-0.17-5.i386.rpm. So, =
I upgraded to the 7.1
rpm " tftp-server-0.17-9.i386.rpm".

After making some changes to the /xinetd.d/tftp configuration file, I =
could get the first file to
download but no files there after....After the linux box was rebooted, =
the same scenario would
occur (first file success, other file request time out).

Configured:
============

[root@sip-server154 xinetd.d]# more tftp
# default: off
# description: The tftp server serves files using the trivial file =
transfer \
# protocol. The tftp protocol is often used to boot diskless \
# workstations, download configuration files to network-aware =
printers, \
# and to start the installation process for some operating =
systems.
service tftp
{
        socket_type               =3D dgram
        protocol                     =3D udp

        user                           =3D nobody
        log_type                      =3D FILE /var/log/tftplog
        log_on_success          +=3D USERID
        log_on_failure             +=3D USERID
        server                           =3D /usr/sbin/in.tftpd
        server_args                   =3D -s /tftpboot
        disable                         =3D no
}

All of the directories have the appropriate permissions...

I tried the Red Hat 6.2 rpm and got it to work using the /xinetd.d/tftp =
config file but it
will not accept the -s parameter; therefore the tftp client must include =
the tftpboot/filename
in request. Some of my clients can not do this/

Any ideas with RH6.2 on how to setup default directory to tftpboot as =
root directory (-s)
switch using xinetd.d...

Thanks!

T.

Pine will read news as well. Just set it up in configuration...

There are no native openssh packages for RedHat 6.2.

They won't. RedHat 7 uses glibc 2.2 while RedHat 6 uses glibc 2.1. And
as you cannot be sure of backwards binary compatibility, it probably
won't work.

The source rpm's for RedHat 7.0 _might_ compile - but I vaguely remember
something about openssh not being able to compile on glibc < 2.2...

On RedHat, they will be in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 (unless you choose
another arch explicitly).

As an alternative to openssh, you could install ssh from ssh.com.

Eh, RedHat 7.1 uses a 2.4 kernel :)

However it is 2.4.2 - and perhaps upgrading to 2.4.4 would help? Anyway
there are lot of bugfixes from 2.4.2 to 2.4.4.

Have you tried older versions of RedHat? Did they work? (ie. is it a 2.4

I'll second that. Must have used FIPS over a hundred times over a few
years and haven't lost a single DOS partition. Haven't lost a single

ipchains/iptables are the only ones (ipchains for you I think) - look at

/usr. config in /etc. User data (perhaps the most important) in /home.

And th first lesson: Don't use your box as root (I know by bitter

Pine is probably the best console (text) mail client available.

As one of the other posters has said, fetchmail is a simple reliable
programme for retrieving your POP3 (and other) mail. Once your mail
is downloaded and 'spooled' on your system, you can use any mail reader
that takes your fancy.

As for news clients, SLRN is by far the most popular here. Everyone
seems to like SLRN. Absolutely stuffed with features, plus it can
interpret slang macros.

  I'm not sure exactly where "elsewhere" is, so I can't look at what you've
previously posted, and can only make guesses as to your config. If I'm
wrong in those guesses, I apologize...

   If you have a dulpicate hard drive for backups (same model of drive, I'm
assuming, since you use the word "duplicate"), why not do something simple,
such as....

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb

   That would make a bit-for-bit copy, meaning that in the case of extreme
failure, you swap the drives, and you're running again. Of course, fiddling
with the block size would speed it up. And, of course, if you were to put
the second drive on a different controller than the first, that should speed
things up as well.

Hello...

I'd like some expert advice, to set up a Linux-router.

I have Suse 7.1 Professionell available. I'd like to set up an Linux based
router without monitor, cd-rom and without keyboard. The computer has 1GB
harddisk and a floppydisk. It has one ethernet-nic and one modem connected
to com1 (ttyS0).

So now what I want: the router needs to be out of sight (basement). I'd
like dial-on demand for the modem with possibility to upgrade to ISDN and to
DSL (not only in replacement for the modem, but in addition to it, so I can
choose the method of internet-link).

The router should support firewall and masqerading. There should also be a
service running for DNS, DHCP, SMPT, a POP3-picker (eg. fetchmail), a
NNTP-service (like leafnode), NTP and probably a client-server-fax solution.
And (if possible) a solution for centralized authentication of Linux and
Windows-Users (one user-database for all linux and windows users).

So what software would you recommend. The network behind the router is only
three or maybe five (Windows/Linux) PC's.

Check the SuSE hardware db www.suse.com if it's supposed to be working
with 7.1. Check the support db if there is help on getting it working.

At least you paid some support with your distro, I don't know how it
works, but the docs that came with your distro should provide more info.

Good luck
