Naw, just got new memory, and am waiting to see what happens.

Took a power hit last night, and reboot's fsck gave me
'Deleted inode xxxx has zero dtime. FIXED'

Those are the kind of things that got accumulated before,
without hostile shutdowns.

We'll see..

Subject: Please Help (Xterm problems with RedHat Linux 6.2)
Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 22:37:03 -0400

I'm running Redhat Linux 6.2 Professional (with updated kernel) on a
System with:
Pentium 233 MMX
128 MB Ram
4 MB Video
60.5 GB HDD

When I try to load Xterm (Start Button -> Utilities -> Regular Xterm), I
get a message saying:

Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "Wheat"
Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "Orchid"

After the message, Xterm loads, but I don't see anything that I'm typing
in the window. I'm assuming that the foreground & background colors are
the same (black) since it cannot allocate the colormap for the correct
colors...

I've tried everything to resolve this problem. I've tried changing the
resolution, etc., but nothing helps. Been at this for weeks.

NOTE: I can use Color Xterm (from the Utilities Menu) or Terminal (from
the Toolbar), and they both work ok, except for Regular Xterm.

Please help.

Ok, I've been searching, and have gotten close with my SB 16 card.

Here are some questions I'm hoping someone can answer:

I rebuilt the kernel with ensoniq 1371 loaded. I DO get sound,
but it's kinda staticy

However, 'cat /dev/sndstat' gives me Device not found.
It was there when I had tried building the kernel with SB16 support.
But now it's not there...
Is this correct? Or does it mean something is wrong?
(this drove me crazy rebuilding, re-booting, over and over again,
thinking I didn't have sound, as it was my test. Then I
'cat sound.au >/dev/audio' and it WORKS!)

I'm also trying to figure out modules, but haven't gotten the
hang of it yet. See my other thread.

Subject: Loading modules
Date: Sat, 05 May 2001 21:52:24 -0500

Using Slackware 7.1, kernel 2.2.16:

When I rebuilt the kernel with drivers as modules, they didn't load.
I'm trying to trace the boot flow to see how they are loaded, and
can't quite figure it out. It looks like it's called from rc.S.

I added modules to /etc/rc.d/modules.rc but that didn't seem to do it.
Can anyone explain this, or point me to something besides the howto?

When I do a kernel rebuild, and 'make modules' the modules
are compiled, but not moved to /lib/modules/2.2.16/...
Do I have to move them manually?
'make bzlilo' installs the kernel for me, am I just too spoiled by this?

As an example, I added sound support to my kernel. Was it even
nessesary to rebuild? Could I have just loaded sound.o and
es1371.o? I couldn't figure out where to get those to load.
(lsmod didn't show them as loaded)

kerneld is specified as needed to load and unload modules. But
the only place it appears is in rc.modules, and it's commented
out.

I'm a little lost on modules. If I knew at least one place to
start, I could slowly start to learn this. But none of the
stuff I can find starts out that simple. It all seems to assume
a lot further understanding than where I'm starting from.

Thanks for any help.

I've got Slackware 7.12, 2.2.16, and SB PCI 16 card.
It's all working. I believe it's good enough.

Real Player 8 had trouble playing as anyone but root. I
chmod 666 the audio, mixer, dsp, sound, etc... Now it plays
as the regular user.

But, then I had to set it to http ONLY for all the protocols.
Why?

I tried running the autoconfig feature in it's preferences, and
it fails, saying it can't contact a server.

But I can browser the whole world with netscape just fine.
I've run real player on my MS Windows box behind the same firewall.
It's definitely NOT a network issue, or an issue with networking
on this specific linux box.

It's working for now, using HTTP, but I'd prefer to have it
running correctly.

Can anyone give me any ideas about this? Any help is
appreciated.

Subject: Installing windows and linux
Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 03:20:10 GMT

Hi,
I will need, in a near future, to compile for the Windows platform. I've
decided since I'm going to reinstall my distribution anyway to arrange the
partitions on my HD. I have 2 hard disks, one for the system and windows and
the other will hold my /home and /usr/local for linux... The second HD (hdc)
should be left untouched by Windows and it should only be installed on the first
partition of my hda.

Here is what I'm probably going to do:

Abstract from fdisk /*
Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 784 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 262 2104483+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 263 328 530145 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda3 329 784 3662820 83 Linux

Command (m for help): v
62 unallocated sectors

Command (m for help):
*/

hda1 is my Windows partition of 2G (2048M). I think I need it to be bootable,
but I'm unsure if it's necessary. Also unsure about the kind of partition to
make FAT32 vs FAT16? LBA? What to do?
hda2 is my Swap partition of 512M (I know it's big, but I like it this way...)
hda3 is my main linux partition will hold all that is not my personnal files and
is about (6.4G - 2.5G = 3.9G), which is more than enough... Maybe I should push
this windows partion a gig higher... anyway, those things are details...

I'm just looking to know if this will work for the installation? I'm planning
on reseting the partition map, reboot, install windows, reboot, install Redhat
7.1 and then settle down for awhile... What do you think of this? Will windows
delete my partition table (as it often did when I tried before...)?

Thanks for any suggestion, help, hint!
        Simon

Hello,

Download these fonts and new XftConfig

http://keithp.com/~keithp/fonts/truetype.tar.gz
http://keithp.com/~keithp/fonts/XftConfig

Unzip the fonts in usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts

Backup your old XftConfig in /etx/X11
Unzip the new XftConfig in /etx/X11
Add this path to the new XftConfig: dir "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype"

Under "look & feel" "style" enable anti-aliased fonts.
Restart KDE. Then set your fonts in "look & feel" "fonts".
I'm using Verdana looks the best to me. The default KDE fonts will not look
good with anti-aliasing enabled.

You can use these fonts without using anti-aliasing, but it looks great :-).
You can also add XftConfig to your home directory if you want it just for
one user, but rename it "xftconfig".

Regards,
        Jim H

If you are using RedHat 7.0 or 7.1 you can boot in any part of the HDD
using the blbal option 'lba32' in the configuration file of LILO

Foremost, I apologize for the verbose subject above !!.... (and the
exclamation marks).

Eric... you're a legend !! ..... after many nights of frustrating re-install
the problem has now been solved ... thanks to your good observation of my
error message.

Yes, 0X0302 actually refers to hda2... and there lies all the problem.

Very simply, Lilo (under RH7.1) install made an assumed connectivity to the
"DOS/Win" evironment... I don't know how it selects the specific partition,
except that it does.
So, for those of us, who do not use the conventional DOS/Win startups... the
Lilo boot creation will terminate because it was unable to locate a bootable
partition under dos/win.
My solution was very simple, remove that reference under lilo.conf and then
linux boot was successfully installed on the 2nd HDD. Its little over
sight like this that makes one ... want to kick oneself !

Thank you all, who contributed in assisting me in the last week.
I suggest the rest of you still trying to resolve Linux Redhat 7.1 lilo
problems ...
run "lilo -v -v" and you'll soon see everthing that Lilo is doing. THANKS
Eric.

Subject: Re: LILLL? Prompt
Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 08:22:58 GMT

Each of the letters L I L and O in the prompt represent one of the
phases of booting LILO having been completed thus you could see L- on
bootup or LI- or LIL- or LILO (and then it runs, hopefully). I've not
seen it repeat a letter before but it could conceivably be trying a step
repeatedly and failing repeatedly.

The documentation that comes with LILO is first class (classic British
saying, right! :-) ) and it makes a fascinating read. In my
distribution (an ancient 6 year old Slackware) it is under
/usr/lib/lilo. There's a README which is the plain text form of the
manual and a much more easily readable DVI file with the same contents
but a in a book format called user.dvi in the doc subdirectory (I use
xdvi to view it in XFree86).

Extract from my README on my old (probably much older than yours)
version of LILO...

"LI The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot

loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a

geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map
    installer.
LIL The second stage boot loader has been started, but it can't
load
the descriptor table from the map file. This is typically caused by
a
media failure or by a geometry mismatch.
LIL? The second stage boot loader has been loaded at an incorrect
address. This is typically caused by a subtle geometry mismatch or
by
moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer.
LIL- The descriptor table is corrupt. This can either be caused by
a
geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/map without running the map
    installer.
LILO All parts of LILO have been successfully loaded."

Personally I used to keep getting LIL- and I had no idea why; re-running
lilo after booting from a rescue disk had no effect, often. I have my
distribution on /dev/hda4 and so one of the (previously) mysterious
lines in the setup created /etc/lilo.conf file was "boot=/dev/hda4". I
had thought that this meant "boot the /dev/hda4 partition" but it
actually meant "install LILO on the boot sector of the /dev/hda4
partition" the problem then being how the MBR (q.v.) itself boots LILO.
Unbeknownst to me I had installed LILO as a replacement MBR over the DOS
MBR at one time earlier as well as the installation I thought I was
dealing with on the boot sector of /dev/hda4. All became clear with the
pretty little diagrams of boot sectors, partition tables, partitions,
logical partitions, etc. in the documentation and it has worked like a
charm ever since!

Hope this helps, otherwise sorry to have wasted your time.

Regards,
Carl Peto

If that is the only kind of problem fsck is coming up with, then
you probably don't really have a problem.

What kernel are you using and what version of e2fsck and mke2fs

- Mount 2.5p
- Net-tools 1.32-alpha
- Kbd 0.91"

Whereas I've got...

gcc -v = 2.7.2
libc                 =       5.3.12
libc++               =       27.1.4   ?? (meaning 2.7.1.4 I suppose?)
Binutils: ld -v = "cygnus-2.6 (with BFD 2.6.0.14)"
ldd -v & -V = 1.8.2
modules              =       2.0.0
sysVinit             =       2.62

I didn't find any reference to "modutils" in the document.

I'm slightly nervous about upgrading where I don't need to in case
backward compatibity is an issue and I end up breaking my system and
having to buy a new distribution, backup, restore, pick through old and
new files, etc., re-install and generally waste a few weekends and make
my girlfriend think I don't love her anymore! ;-) I can see that my
binutils is out of date which could cause problems but wouldn't the
dynamic linker, C library, C++ library (both .so and therefore dynamic?)
all only come into play after the kernel has started and is running user
mode programs?

Sorry if I'm being dense, I have never built kernels before Linux and
this is the first major change to my kernel since it was installed!

Thanks,

Carl
