Thanks for the reply - I had also had a look at the RAID howto - The kernel
patches only seem to go to 2.2.10 (Are they compatible with 2.2.19?)

Hi. I have had a system running redhat 6.2 for a while with no trouble.
Recently, I had a crash and some files were removed from my disk during the
recovery cycle. (I don't know if that is important, or not.)

Anyway, when the system boots, my network card no longer works. And, programs
which run over the network (even to the local machine-no, not the localhost
interface, it's ok) fail. The log /var/log/messages contains the following:

insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0smp/net/via-rhine.o: init-module: Device or
resource busy <27>
insmod: /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0smp/net/via-rhine.o: insmod eth0 failed.

What do I do about this? Where would I begin to learn more about what this
means?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Boiled down to "incorporates tcpwrapper-like access controls" (for udp
as well as tcp, not that that's of much interest, since there are no
interesting udp services because if there were nobody would mind if they
mostly didn't work, by definition, so they couldn't be interesting).

It also does logging. Useful, but I already have tcplogger and friends.

The disadvantage of course is:

  a) it's new, hence buggy.
  b) it uses millions of separate little files instead of one single
     nice human-editable file.

How can I make linux to not check for new hardware? It just slows down the
startup. When I first installed RedHat 7.1, I hadn't set up NE2000, or
Sound Blaster, and it didn't do anything for them. What is it exactly
doing? BTW, those cards are PnP. Kernel 2.2 didn't do this, but 2.4 does.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Redhat 7.1 Apache "ServerName" Question
Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 18:10:53 -0700

Hello,

I've got three different Redhat 7.1 boxes that I'm trying to get to use the
"ServerName" directive in httpd.conf for Apache.

It's really bizzare, because all of these machines are behaving as if I
haven't put in the servername directive at all (it just keeps whatever
hostname the user has typed in).

This happens even with a virgin system that has simply turned on Apache and
has put in the ServerName directive.

For example, I just put in:
ServerName [my ip address here]

Then, I made an entry into my /etc/hosts file that gives my server a name.
Then if I type in http://[servername] in my browser, I end up keeping the
same servername that I typed in. This is NOT the behavior that I got with
earlier versions of Apache that came bundled with Redhat 7.0 and 6.2. Is
there another directive that I don't know about?

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

-Scott

supported

Install libc-5.3.12-31.i386.rpm and ld.so-1.9.5-13.i386.rpm from Redhat 6.2
CD.
You can download only those two rpms from the redhat mirror ftp site.
Reinstall WP8 and it should be happy.

Subject: PCMCIA / PS2 IRQ12 Conflict (2.4 kernel)
Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 18:35:46 -0700

Hi,

I'd like some suggestions as to the cause and fix of a problem I am
having with Linux 2.4 freezing up on me. My system is

- Winbook XL
- Red Hat 7.1 (2.4.2-2 kernel)

The mouse is a PS/2 device (the Winbook has a keyboard 'nipple'
and touchpad), and this is what Win95 sees it as. When installing RH, it
didn't recognize the mouse, so I used the text install. On first boot, the
mouse was recognized by the hardware detection and assigned as
a generic ps/2 mouse. The first time I booted into X, the system froze.

Booting next time and staying in text mode, I tried gpm and mev,
the laptop froze both times. (/dev/mouse -> /dev/psaux so thats ok)

Looking under /proc/interrupts I see that the PS/2 interrupt is being
shared with the TI PCI1131 PCMCIA cardbus controller.
Several documents indicate the the PS/2 must use IRQ12, so the
1131 IRQ may need to be changed. However, looking at
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts lists IRQ12 as being excluded - so how
come the controller claimed it? (perhaps the exclude only applies
to devices in the PCMCIA slots...?). Under Win95 the 1131 uses
IRQ15.

Thinking that maybe the interrupts from the TI1131 were the
cause of the problem I performed:

/etc/init.d/pcmcia stop

This removed PCMCIA services and /proc/interrupts shows only
the PS/2 mouse on IRQ12. However, booting into X still freezes and
so does mev. Actually, I just ran mev (with PCMCIA
services off), and could type text, however, as soon as I touched the
mouse, the system freezes.

This system has had RH 6.2 working fine in the past, and booting
into Win95 shows all is well there.

dmesg and /var/log/messages don't contain any interesting info on
why the system may be crashing. Although there is the comment
that the serial driver is 5.02 and that SHARE_IRQ is enabled.

I deleted /etc/sysconfig/mouse and ran mouseconfig ... and receved
a segmentation fault while probing for the mouse, and then the
system was frozen. Hmmm, is there a bug here?
(or perhaps the missing file is the cause of that)
I had to run 'mouseconfig --noprobe' to regenerate
the /etc/sysconfig/mouse file. I selected the Generic PS/2
mouse, as that looked to be the only correct one. I did
try the Microsoft Intellimouse (PS/2), however when the
system was booted, I no longer had use of the keyboard
and had to use the boot CD to rescue the system.

Anyway, some suggestions would be helpful.
If no one can think of a cause for this problem,
then I'll have a look at compiling a newer
version of the kernel.

Please HELP!

Dave Hawkins

What exactly are you expecting the 'ServerName' directive to do? And
are you using the 'ServerName' directive outside of any other
configuration elements or inside a '<VirtualHost>' statement?

No, you need mgetty. It can be set up to either allow a direct shell
login, or auto ppp (where you just enter Linux username and password in
Win DUN with no script). Just beware of examples that show +pap pppd
option, you do not want to use +pap or require-pap since that asks the
other machine to authenticate itself. The auth and login pppd options
take care of the user login (with properly configured pap-secrets).

Hi Dean,

I have checked some things, and I think that the error
should be on the PCTel driver AND some bug on the
2.2.17 kernel too. That are the tried combinations and
the result:

Kernel Driver Result
2.2.14 old ok
2.2.14 new fail
2.2.17 old fail
2.2.17 new fail

The shows that main symbol are missing. If they really
was missing on the libraries, nothing on Linux was
working.
There are another thing: the error only occour when I
change the value of HAL on Makefiles to HAL_VIA686A
(that are my motherboard). Problably the error are a
missing 'include <linux/kernel.h>' on the file
via686ahal.a, but I don't access to the source code.

I have my run level set to 5 so that when my RH7.0 machines boots up,
it boots into X. However, by default, it always run gdm (gnome display
manager?) I want it to run xdm by default, because I log onto my
machine using Exceed from my W2K machine.

I've stared at the startup scripts many times and can't seem to figure
out how to get it to run xdm, not gdm on start. I've particularly
stared at /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients and /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc but am
not sure if those are the files I need to be tweaking.

In run level 5, how do I get xdm to come up instead of gdm?

/proc is not a physical filesystem, it does not need to be fscked.

Running

Try adding the recommended line to /etc/fstab, if it isn't already there.

If the above fails, perhaps you could change the
action "Mounting /proc filesystem" mount yada yada
to a naked "mount" command.

Define "correct". Your battery's dead, or you've a BIOS that's
problemmatic post y2k. That's going to be a problem to fix with
software.

My favourite way of dealing with Linux time is:

  hwclock --set --date="Sat ... UTC 2001" --utc
  hwclock --hctosys --utc

You'll have to set some GMT/UTC-ish variable somewhere for it to work
at boot up. "egrep 'GMT|UTC' /etc/init.d/*" # or /etc/rc.d/init.d?

With a broken bios and/or dead battery, I don't know how useful this
will be.
