take a look at fips, a free non-destructive partitioning utility. it should
be on your redhat 7 cd, or you can get it from
http://www.igd.fhg.de/~aschaefe/fips/. there is documentation, but you can
also find help on redhat's web support. as they will warn, backup your data
first, just in case.

Try doing:
        strings KERNEL | grep '2\.2'

Trying compiling the kernel with "make mrproper" next time.

Are there any minimum amounts that you would not pass ?

You can either use the NT bootloader:

  http://www.ibiblio.org/mdw/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html

But it's easier to use LILO:

When I first installed Debian on my laptop, I did so with my modem and
ethernet cards unplugged, thinking it would make for a *less
complicated* installation. HA. I thought I could just edit config files
later to get everything running. But the Debian Doc Project docs are
mostly blank sections with "do this later" penciled in and the Linux
Doc Project docs mostly refer to Red Hat and the directions don't dync
with the locations of Debian configuration files. I gave up trying to
get my networking working by reading the HOWTOS, the Rute Tutorial and
various other Linux docs and just reinstalled with everything plugged
in.

The networking now works, (Yay!), but now after booting up, every 5
minutes I get a screenfull of text breaking in on whatever I'm doing as
root.

The text says "Usage /sbin/getty [" and then the help text you would
get by issing the "/sbin/getty/ command with no arguments. But I get
this multiple times, then an error line that says

INIT Id "S" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

So something is wrong with getty, and it has to do with Init. I've read
the manpages for init, and related manpages and for getty and related
manpages. And I'm stumped. Where do I look and what do I change to fix
this respawing problem?

I'm really not in the mood to reinstall the system *again* to tyr to
fix a problem.

Also, is there no place to look for detailed instructions on setting up
Debian by hand if you had to? The installation program is all very
fine, but I don't know what it's doing or why; the configure modules
segment promises a page of description on each module so you can decide
whether to install it, but doesn't deliver. You have to *guess* what
something does and whether you need it.

Just wondering if the best thing to do (with loadlin), would be to copy
your kernel to /dev/hda1 and fire up Loadlin with something like;

c:\path\to\kernel compact root=/dev/hdc1 ro

gnorpm is not linked against rpm-4.0.2. It is linked
against rpm-3.x. Solution: relink with rpm-4.0.2 or
recompile gnorpm.

Subject: Netmax and Port Forwarding
Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 18:56:04 GMT

Hi-
I'm a relative Linux Newbie, but have a strong tech background, and I
purchased Netmax Internet Server a few months back to help set up a home
file/web server. I really didn't want to pay for open source, but I thought
what the hell, it'll be everything I need and it's got a nice GUI, right?
Now, I am noticing Netmax has severe limitations. My problem? I want to
open TWO ports, 8000, 8001 so I can run a Shoutcast server from my internal
network. I run the Shoutcast server on a W2K box with internal IP
192.168.1.3. I also have the Netmax Firewall Retail version which THEIR
tech support advised me to buy. Well, their retail firewall doesn't allow
traffic rerouting, and I WILL NOT pay another $100 for a license just to get
this feature. They also only provide support on a per-issue basis for $150
an issue. WHAT A RIPOFF! I figure there must be a way to modify my
IPCHAINS to allow the open ports and forwarding to the W2K box from the
command line. I would truly appreciate any help. I have read the HOWTO's
and scoured through books, but nothing I try seems to work. The funny thing
is, this used to work when I had a Linksys router, but now I get nada.
A little more about my configuration:
I have a two NIC card setup. NIC1 (eth0) runs my internal network and is
not NAT'd. NIC2 (eth1) is my external NIC and NATs incoming traffic. I
would like to forward incoming traffic on "externalIP":8000 to
192.168.1.3:8000, and do the same for port 8001. How can I tell if port
8000 is open? Anybody know of a Netmax support site that has no affiliation
with Netmax?
PLEASE HELP!
Thanks in Advance,
Matt

Subject: Windows 2000 and Linux
Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 19:52:31 +0100

I am using RedHat 7 with kernel 2.4.0 and have 2 IBM drives: DTLA-307030 and
307045.
On the 307045 I have win2k and win98 happily booting using the NT Loader.
The 307030 has Linux on it, with /dev/hdg1 as the root partition.
The only way to boot linux rather than win2k at the moment is to swap the
boot drive, which is annoying.
I have tried:
1. making lilo boot win2k and it just jumps back to the lilo boot menu
immediately.
2. making win2k boot linux using the bootsector as described in the FAQs. I
have copied it from the /dev/hdg and /dev/hdg1 (after altering lilo.conf to
install there - perhaps (long shot) the partition table was affecting the
process. This didn't work: all I saw was LI printed down the left side of
the screen, in a seemingly infinite loop.

So this is a bad scene. I don't want to know about getting the 512byte boot
sector referred to in my boot.ini, and I don't want to know about how lilo
can boot win2k. Because I tried pointing it to the MBR on the win2k drive
*and* the win2k host partition. I can use Ranish's partition manager to boot
win98 but didn't try win2k.

From: Nils Holland <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Cache-Memory Problem
Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2001 20:28:42 +0200

Hallo all!

Let me tell you about a problem I have encountered:

I have a Pentium 200 MMX that sits there all day long and handles routing
IP-traffic over a modem PPP-line for the other computers on our local
network. Recently, I decided to install Apache on that machine in order to
provide a small Intranet-WWW-Service. At the same time, I decided that the
24 MB I had in there were probably a little too small, so I put 96 MB in
there. And that's where the problems started! With the 24 MB, everything
ran fine, but with the 96 MB the following problem happens:

Rather often, the machine crashes. In the best case, it runs for about
three hours, then it simply stops responding. The cursor on the screen
keeps blinking, but that's about it. Now, when I reset the machine or turn
it off and back on, it sometimes already hangs before the boot-process has
completed. After several tries, I can get it back up and it will run for a
few more hours before the same thing happens again. As I said before, this
didn't happen when I had only 24 MB installed.

I went looking for the problem, and I set up my BIOS in a really
"conservative" way. That didn't help! Checking the hardware didn't help
either - the 96 MB RAM runs for days in a different machine.

Finally, I turned the external cache off. And indeed, now the machine's
been running for about a day without problems. Right now I'd like to know
if anybody has an idea what I can do - probably I should simply let the
external cache turned off, but probably there's something else I could try?

The machine has 256 KB of external cache on board. In the BIOS there is an
option I had never noticed on my other computers - it is "Cachable memory"
and can be set to either 64 MB or 512 MB. By default, it is set to 64 MB,
and with that setting the problem above occurs. When I set it to 512 MB, I
cannot even boot Linux - in that case the boot process even stops when the
(Award) BIOS displays the ressource usage.

I know (because of the fact that it worked with 24 MB) that this isn't a
Linux problem, and probably the simplest thing to do is to simply leave my
cache turned off. But if someone has experience with such problems or a
suggestion what I should try, I'd be glad to hear about it.

Greetings,
Nils
