/etc/X11/window-managers sets up our menu for what desktop to load, but if
you loaded mdk 7.2 rpms for desktop you are really toasting things. 7.2 no
longer uses this, but other than producing incompatibilities with 7.1 I
can't find a reason. It seems mixing the two is nightmarish.

As far as I know it is possible to compile the multimedia files with X
3.3.6 although depending you may want to go to 4.0.1. I have instructions
for the update on my help page.

Although I am not much of a GNOME fan (My initial experiences with it were
back when it was a crash fest) I understand that Helix is a landmark for
ease of installation. (even if it is a depressing color scheme ;) While KDE
does not currently have quite so easy an install it may be moot for many
because they will get it installed with their distro. Still, I like the
control of installing from source. I have instructions for the total prep
and install here along with tips on XFree86 too.

Note that if you install in other than /usr you lose the debian menus which
was a plus for me. Since you use multiple desktops you can probably edit
the /etc/menu-methods/kde* files to enable them if you want. Then again
kmenuedit can add your other favorite programs easily too.

Note that you can import gtk themes too and... KDE has been knocked for
visuals but try blending background gradients with images on the desktop
for amazing visuals. Also note the single click everywhere and other nice
features. (double click came from the Mac one button mouse and MS true to
form copied it to windoze and did not even use the right button until win95
when they looked at the OS/2 interface... so why double click and get
carpal tunnel on Linux with 3 buttons?)

BTW you will see a lot of new and exciting software come to KDE now because
no matter how you view the arguments about design between supporters of the
two desktops one fact is not in dispute. The KDE paradigm is more
productive to program in, but with KDE 2 it jumps by orders of magnitude.
It is just a matter of developers becoming familiar with it however a lot
of projects are in the works. It just looks exciting!

here is my help page
http://virtualartisans.com/linux/mandrake/

BTW check out our KDE 2 app, Quanta (see below)

Enjoy ;-)

I installed SuSE 7 on a SPARC Ultra 5 yesterday - installation went
fine, booted from the CD and ran YAST etc, then when I went to reboot
it wouldn't boot - gets as far as:

Boot device: a File and args:
Warning: Fcode sequence resulted in a net stack depth change of 1 The
file loaded does not appear to be executable

and does no more. From mooching around Deja I gather that this may mean
that the machine thinks there's been a hardware change - at a guess,
does the mbr need to be flashed to the eeprom?
I've got some experience of Linux on Intel boxes, but none whatsoever
of Sun machinery and no manuals. Any ideas anyone?

Just press [TAB] at the boot prompt and you should get a list of boot
options. One of them will give you the option to insert a driver disk (I
think it's "dd", but I'm not certain). I assume you have read the
CDROM/Howto before attempting this......

As you stated in a previous post, you installed X from tarbols.
Therefore it is not registered in the rpm database. To install
that rpm use the --nodeps option. If this fails, try the --force
option but all bets are off.

Remember, _ALL_ config files got replaced. Therefore you
will have to edit the ones in place to look like the ones
you had before. Start in /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession.

Sounds like you just downloaded the kernel headers but not the kernel
source, or something. Does the /usr/src/linux/drivers directory exist?
If so, get the full kernel source. If not, exactly what error message

Obviously I could just omit lilo if only one kernel was there.

How do I install NTLDR without NT though? Does the windows 2000 repair

Package dependencies only work if you don't bypass the packaging system
and install things yourself. 'rpm -q XFree86' will tell you what version
the package management system thinks you have installed.

If you can't get the newer XFree86 packages installed due to Red Hat
changing their package format, I'm told there's an interim release of
rpm available somewhere at ftp.redhat.com which is itself in the old
format (so can be installed on older systems) but can install packages
in the new format. (I don't know exactly where it is, I'm afraid, but I
would hope it's in a reasonably obvious place.)

I believe there can be some problems when NT uses the FAT32 partition
too.
Have you tried to point LILO to the FAT partition or to the NTFS

Yes RH has a so claimed version RPM-3.5.9 which is supposed to use RPM3.xx
to install RPM v4.xx - but itself does not install on the standard RH6.2
release.

The fat partition has no OS on it. I *had*:
hde1: win98SE
hde3: FAT32 share for 98 to read docs from win2k
hde5: Win2k.

Now, after resolving hardware issues with linux, I have:
hde1: RedHat 7
hde3: FAT32 share (no OS)
hde5: NTFS with win2000

If all else fails, I will delete 2000 and backup the shared FAT32 then bring
2000 forward on the disk and recopy the shared docs. A bit of a mission, but
unless I learn how to install NTLDR on its own (that allows booting far from
the initial clusters) it's how things will have to be.

You could hack a ghostscript configuration to use the appropriate
monospaced font. To use the HP's built-in fonts, I don't know of
existing filters that do that sort of retro, fixed-width formatting.
You can simply copy an existing /etc/printcap entry, adjusting for the
132-column width. Set "if=<path-to-filter> or "of=<filter>" in
/etc/printcap if it's an older lpd, or whatever configuration file
lprng uses, respectively, depending on the existing configuration, in
whatever language you feel most comfortable writing complex escape
sequenc with.

Adding this to your lilo.conf does not work:

other=/dev/hde5
      label=NT

and now rerunning /sbin/lilo

Are you sure that NT didn't write anything on the win98 partition?
I've read that some system files will be allocated there.

Reason I ask is 'cause Im totally new to burning cd's.
Im using the software that comes with the HP8100 CDRW
I realize now that I should be "copying" the image
file to the CD but when I do this with the Adaptec
copier that came with the burner it doesn't recognize
the .iso file, complaining that its not a valid
Adaptec cd image file (.cif), and this seems to be the
only image file option for copying. Is there some other
software on the net I can use to copy these images??

Thanks IA!!

Hi,

could anybody please give me some examples about configuring samba with
radius authentication.

Already I have setup pam_radius_auth.so however samba does not use this.
PAM support is compiled into samba.

Thanks
JH
