This is wrong. /usr/include/linux, which is used when building userspace
programs, should correspond to the headers used when libc was built.
The path /usr/include/linux should not be used when building kernels and
modules; /PATH/TO/KERNEL/SOURCE/include/linux should be used instead.

(Besides, if you use a package-management system, it may do the wrong thing
when you try to upgrade libc.)

However, the difference is rarely significant.

Okay, I'm using Disk Druid b/c for some reason when installing Linux, I
can use the automatic partitioning feature. So now that I have figured
out how to use Disk Druid, there is still a little problem. First I
create my boot and swap partitions. Then I create the boot partition
using the remaining space. However, I keep getting a "No Free Primary"
error with the swap partition. Any ideas? Thanks.

I have two 20Gig IDE drives running on a Debian 2.2 box (Kern. 2.4.4).

Do both drives partitions have to be set to 'fd' for successful Booting
into Raid1 ?

Actually, this is wrong. what you're basically saying, is that you
can't upgrade a kernel's headers, and basically the source tree, unless
you upgrade libc. Since /usr/include/linux is a symbolic link to
/usr/src/linux/include/linux, this will not matter.

The PROPER thing to do, would be to

        1) keep a copy of your kernel's current configuration (generally
           held in /usr/src/linux/.config)

        2) download the latest kernel source from
           ftp.<country code>.kernel.org:/pub/linux/kernel/<version>
where <country code> is the country code of where you live,
and version is the latest stable release you want to use,
           such as 2.2 or 2.4.

        3) rm -rf on /usr/src/linux
        4) unpack the source tarball.
        5) cd /usr/src/linux; make mrproper
        6) copy the .config file mentioned in 1) to /usr/src/linux
        7) make oldconfig ; make dep ; make clean
        8) do a 'make clean' on the program you are wanting to compile
           then recompile it again.

But since this is the kernel that you are wanting to compile,
forget 8) and then compile your kernel as normal. somehow, your symbolic
link from /usr/src/linux/include/linux to /usr/include/linux was lost.
That is recreated, when you do a make mrproper.

> However, the difference is rarely significant.

This is non-libc related, and actually, non-C library related,
so glibc or libc would not apply. the kernel doesn't use libc.

                                                        BL.

Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 19:31:12 -0500

I have stumbled into a small problem on my RH Linux 6 server and was curious
to know if anyone has seen this before?

I have discovered that sometimes my maillog file does not get written to
properly.

More specificaly, it appears that when the rotation scripts run, syslogd
continues writing to the same maillog file. In this case /varl/log/maillog.1
rather than /var/log/maillog.

If I restart syslogd, then everything is fine until the next time the
rotation scripts run.

Thank you,
Tim Mallardi

that's the one. <smile> it's probably still a good idea to get the
latest kernel and compile APM into it though.... they've apparently made
a few advances in it lately.

There is also a good chunk of drivers which probably do not have code
for powering down when not in use, since most kernel hackers don't
really think of it as very important until they have over a dozen
running amchines in their room and the temperature actually effects the
rest of the room.

My roomate maintains the tulip driver and has over 2 dozen computers in
his room, so it probably had pretty good APM integration.

yeah, if you can narrow it down I'm sure the maintainers of whatever
subsystem is breaking would be _VERY_ gracious to know. Good luck in
the bug hunt. <smile> make sure to check /var/log/messages after it

Does someone see this problem before?

Hi all,

After using fdisk to remove/dev/hda12 and add /dev/hda11 for swap file
(Linux swap type partition), I 'vi /etc/fstab' and replace /dev/hda12 with
/dev/hda11 and reboot my PC linux but the command 'swapon -a' complaint

How can I add /dev/hda11 with swapon as default swap file?

The 'linuxconf' on my PC's Redhat 7.1 still not working.

Mandrake has a little utility called 'urpmi' which is basically apt-get
for rpm based distros.... it would do everything for you from the
command line (and without the CD if you tell it).... I think that Redhat
snagged it for their latest release, but since I have an aversion to
redhat, I may be wrong.

FWIW, I just got a message from xig.com pursuant to my inability to make
a Rage Fury Pro 32mb card work, even with the commercial drivers from
xig.

It turns out that ATI, in their infinite wisdom, have re-used at least
one card name, but when the card is queried with a 'scanpci -v' command,
the data it returns is nothing like a Rage Fury Pro 32mb card, so of
course the drivers take an exit, stage right...

I also did a --force install of 4.0.3 on my machine, and watched the log
show that it loaded every driver in the directory looking for one that
recognized that card, faling miserably.

Maybe the same situation exists with your '215' version card?

And ATI bytes the hand that feeds it, again... I don't know about you,
but mine goes back for credit in the morning.
