I'll add another question to the thread. 2 of the developers I work with say
that reiserFS should be used for development because it is more robust then
ext2 and in the embedded system we are developed, the power frequently is
removed from the target system running Linux. As a consequence of the fact
that power can be removed at any time, there is no graceful shutdown of this
system. I am told by one of the developers that reiserFS will be the new
default file system in the next release of Linux. I wonder what some of the
developers here have to say about reiserFS and its reliability in a
situation where power can and will be removed frequently from an embedded
system.

If you look at the documentation for LILO (which you should be able to
pull from the web even if you can't get Linux going), it explains what
phases the program is going through as it displays each letter in thye
word "LILO". From that, you might be able to figure out the problem.

I am running RH 7.1 and have installed gfax 0.4.2. I have run the setup
and mgetty setup druid inclyded in the software. I am not sure how to
proceed from this point. I know it should be set up as a "printer"
queue, but I am lost here. The gfax manual did not come with the rpm I
used and the website for gfax does not show where I can get it.
Could someone enlighten me as to how to proceed.

The BIOS has to be pretty old or an off-brand not to have the extensions.
I have an AMI BIOS from about 1993 and it has the extensions. I'm running
the new LILO with no problems with all my Linux partitions beyond cyl 1024.

Are you seriously asking a question here?.... or is this some kind
of joke.
You may want to have your "developers" rethink their design.
Have they done any embedded work before?
I'm not an expert by any means... but....

Power shouldn't be removed frequently from any system relying on it.
If you have it going that way, I'd think it's a bad design ...

Indeed I found this with a Google search, however, I thought I could just
invoke an xterm with some -ttyS1 -b115200 -c "8N1" option and do it that way.
Anyhoo, lowly ole me, An NT/2000 die-hard, was able to get minicom built,

If you are in Jacksonville, Florida and have experience setting up /
configuring RH 7.1 servers, I could use your help. We are currently
running a RH 6.1 box and need to migrate to our new 7.1 servers that we
just took delivery on. Since I'm a linux novice, I need someone
physically present to do the setup and configuration on the server - then
to migrate our existing data from the current server.
This isn't anything hard - I just need the servers up and running with
network / internet connectivity, DNS, Apache, Email, etc - the standard
RH fare. I don't have enough experience to do this myself, so I'm
looking to hire some talent temporarily. IP's aren't a problem, we've
got half a Class C, neither is bandwidth for the transfer, we have a T1.
Also, don't worry about room, our host won't care as long as the servers
fit within the rack at the end of the day.
The consultants I talked to in Atlanta said it wouldn't be worth the
drive down - it's just an afternoon's worth of work. Which, while is
reassuring, doesn't get my servers up and running.
If you can help me, or know of anyone in the Jacksonville, Florida area,
please respond via email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oh yeah, remove the nospayam and the dashes... duh.
Phone numbers will be provided upon request. If you'd prefer bartering
instead of money, heck, we can do that to. We have lots of cool sharp
things.
Anyhow, thanks in advance for any assistance anyone can provide.

SCSi subsystem driver revision 1.00

scsi channel0: resetting for second half of retries.

I did select the initio 9100 scsi driver during the process. However, it
works fine with kernel 2.2.18 though. Can someone help? thanks!!

I think the network card powers down after awhile and that's what's
happening. Could this cause the loss of DNS settings. (meaning it changed
resolv.conf) This stopped working while using this and sometimes it works in
the GUI so it's not a run level issue. All I can think is a lower down
issue. This happens on the same machine (network card powers down) if I
leave it alone for awhile.

Sounds like you might have to disable the power management facilities in your
BIOS. There might be a way of disabling just the power down on the LAN card.
However, it might be more beneficial to just disable all your APM support in
the BIOS.
See ya

The kernel README says:
: Do NOT use the /usr/src/linux area! This area has a (usually
: incomplete) set of kernel headers that are used by the library header
: files. They should match the library, and not get messed up by
: whatever the kernel-du-jour happens to be.
And the Debian libc6 README.Debian says:
: Q1: Why does the Debian libc6-dev package create /usr/include/linux and
: /usr/include/asm directories containing header files from a specific
: kernel, instead of using the "established" convention of making those
: directories into symlinks pointing to the currently installed kernel?
:
: A1: Occasionally, changes in the kernel headers cause problems with
: the compilation of libc and of programs that use libc. To ensure that
: users are not affected by these problems, we configure libc to use the
: headers from a kernel that is known to work with libc and the programs
: that depend on stable kernel headers.
These agree: /usr/include/linux and /usr/include/asm should be affected
by your choice of libc, not your choice of kernel. That means that
/usr/include/{linux,asm} should _not_ merely be symbolic links into the
kernel source tree that you have chosen to compile most recently.

No, "make mrproper" removes things:
: mrproper: clean archmrproper
: find . \( -size 0 -o -name .depend \) -type f -print | xargs rm -f
: rm -f $(MRPROPER_FILES)
: rm -rf $(MRPROPER_DIRS)
: $(MAKE) -C Documentation/DocBook mrproper
When you "make {,old, menu,x}config", the symbolic link include/asm is
re-established.
/usr/src/linux/include/linux is a directory, not a symbolic link.
No part of the kernel-building process puts symbolic links in /usr/include.
(Putting these symbolic links is something you need to do IF your
distribution choses to use that convention, but for some reason has failed
to do so when you installed the libc development package.)
