Hi,
Recently I relpaced my cd-rom with a CD-R drive to my Linux computer
system. To make the computer see the new CD-R drive I added �hdc=ide-scsi�.
I also added the lines �/sbin/modprobe ide-scsi� and /sbin/modprobe sg� to
my rc.local file. At bootup is now detected as SCSI 0.0.0, which I think
makes it /dev/sda. So far so good.
Now, the problems. The computer can no longer mount the drive that I
had configured before. After the changes I made earlier, I figured the
computer is now looking for a SCSI device, not IDE. So, I removed the
/dev/cdrom to /dev/hdc link in /dev. I tried making a symbllic link for
cdrom to /dev/sda. This has not worked either. As an experiment, I
created /cdrom directory and tried mounting it under that directory
(mount �t iso9660 /dev/sda /cdrom). This returns an error message of �the
kernel does not recognize /dev/sda as a block device�. I�m at a loss as
what to do from here.
The point of me making these changes to my system was to get it
recognize a new CD-R I just installed. Xcdroast sees the CD-R drive, but I
�m unable to access the cd-rom drive anymore � :-(
Any help or advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think you can use Freesco www.freesco.oorg but I might be wrong. You
could also take a look at http://clarkconnect.org. Personally I use
smoothwall because I don't need a webserver and it is more secure to have
as few services as possible running on your internet gateway machine.

well i did what you said and it fixed that problem, but i have another now.
when i have lilo load my new kernel, labeled New_Kernel. when i press enter i
get the following....
loading New_Kernel...
Uncompressing Linux.............Ok, booting the kernel.
then it freezes, and not even cntrl-alt-del worked, and i had to reset my
computer.

Here is what happens when I try to install or update red hat 7.1:
when i get to the "moving install image to hard drive" in the
installation
I get the error: "an error occured, probably because you don't have
enough disk space"
I have:
/boot - 64 megs
{swap}- 256 megs
/ - 2.9 gigs(but it doesn't seem to matter how big I make "root")
When I do finally get the install to start copying the files - I get an
anaconda crash?
ps. I have no problems with any other version of red hat including
7.0....

I am trying the Beta Version of Redmond Linux. I have noticed that it
doesn't seem to have many programs installed with it. It is a very small
but well put together distro, but I need some extra features.
Everytime I try to do an rpm - i ?????.rpm, ???? being program Im
installing, I get basically the same error each time. Its states I don't
have a CC Compiler. I went and downloaded GCC 2.95.3 and have read the
installation notes and how-to, mini how-to, and tried all options, but I can
not get it to configure or compile.
This is the error I get when I try to get it to work:
Chiefslapahoe:~/untard/gcc-2.95.3# ./configure
Configuring for a i586-pc-linux-gnuoldld host.
Created "Makefile" in /root/untard/gcc-2.95.3
./configure: cc: command not found
*** The command 'cc -o conftest -g conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.
I have tried it with the ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-shared options
also to no avail, I basically get the same errors.
I can not get any other programs to configure or make due to the CC Compiler
error, and would like to get this to work somehow.
Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Please post and reply,
and excuse the ImAnMCSE in an Linux group.

I had similar problems, I'm not sure what fixed it but...
Make sure you have scuzi CD enabled in you kernel
Try using /dev/scd0 as the device when you mount
If you figure if one or both of these fix your problem I would
appreciate the info.

I can't ping any IP other than 127.0.0.x.
how do I get the ip address of the Linux box...it is using DHCP
if your answer is "ifconfig"... then
I don't think the NIC is installed (correctly) ...
"ifconfig" returns stats on the 'loop-back' address and nothing else...
shouldn't it show loop-back and 192.168.x.x?
How do I check on what driver is installed...
the www site says "eepro100.o" is the correct one for my card.

hey all,
I realize this is a common question...but I've combed the net to figure this
out.
I'm trying to configure my LinuxPPC 2000 box (Powermac 6500/300) to connect
to my Efficient Speedstream 5861 DSL router using DHCP (Farallon ethernet).
Right now i have a win98 box and an imac connected to the router, they both
work well.
Because of the router, i don't have to worry about the normal dsl pppoe
stuff.
Problem is, when i try to bring eth0 up, it attempts to "determine IP
information" from the router...which times out.
My network setting, divined from the other computers and the router BIOS:
Router addr: 192.168.254.254
Nameserver addr: 192.168.254.254
Gateway addr: 192.168.254.254
I'm pretty sure my ethernet card works...i can set it up to 10.0.0.1 and
ping that address. Physically I know it works because i was using it in the
pc prior. Linux detects the card when it boots.
My netcfg settings:
domain: ameritech.net
nameserver: 192.168.254.254
hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost
interface: eth0 <noip> dhcp
routing
default gateway 192.168.254.254
default gateway device 192.168.254.254 <-- what's the difference?
route settings:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use

i can't add the default route (i think) because eth0 isn't up...

Seems that configure doesn't think you have a compiler either. I don't
understand why you need a compiler for rpms, I thought they were
supposed to eliminate the need to compile things. But I never grokked
rpm's, that's why EVERYTHING on my current system I compiled myself.
Anyway, to solve your problem you need a "working compiler"
See if you have gcc:
ls -l /usr/bin/gcc
if it is not there try:
locate */gcc
if that doesn't work try:
find / -name gcc
find will take FOREVER but it will search your whole filesystem as it
exists now.
if you find gcc then use
export CC=/usr/bin/gcc
to set the environment variable.
If you don't have gcc or this doesn't get there are more things to try,
just come back here for more abuse.

Don't know if this is relevant but did you have some software for Windows to
register your account?
I had a similar problem and it turned out that I needed to type the router's
IP into a browser under linux to register.
Open netscape, type 192.168.254.254 into the address bar and see if you get
a login screen.
