I have a typical Linux server, Windows clients, SAMBA setup, that works just
fine (I did very little configuration - it just worked out of the box).
On 5/5, one particular link - between a Windows machine called "pccity" and
the Linux server (NEWGUY) stopped working. Basically, NEWGUY no longer
shows up in PCCITY's network neighborhood. I'm assuming that something
screwy happened on the Windows machine - and I'd like some advise on
what to look for on the Windows machine. Note that my other Linux box
does still show up in PCCITY's Network Neighborhood. Note that NEWGUY
is accessible via SAMBA from the other Linux box - so we know that it
is still running there.
The only clue I have is that the following messages show up in log.nmb:
process_local_master_announce: Server PCCITY at IP 192.168.0.10 is
announcing itself as a local master browser for workgroup MYGROUP and we
think we are master. Forcing election.
2001/05/20 22:01:46 ***** Samba name server NEWGUY has stopped being a
local master browser for workgroup MYGROUP on subnet 127.0.0.1 *****
2001/05/20 22:02:03 ***** Samba name server NEWGUY is now a local master
browser for workgroup MYGROUP on subnet 127.0.0.1 *****
What is this local master browser stuff?

Did my earlier post not get through?
On lilo 21.6 ( the latest as of a couple of months ago ) -
man lilo.conf and search for menu.
this behavior is plainly explained there and in my post.

man smb.conf and look at 'os level'.
This is just one more stupid Microsoftism which you can overcome by setting
the 'os level' to either take control of the network or let your Windoze
machine(s) fight it out.

boot into the root login. click on the KDE start button. Choose
SuSE|Configuration|yast1
Select the System Administration.
Select Login configuration.
At the top is a selection for graphical or Ascii login. Select Ascii login.
Tab through to the end.
You are done. Reboot and the system will present an ascii login after
reboot.

Your diagram is all anyone needs. You did a good job with it. But not so
good a job with your network. On a subnet, everybody has to be on the same
subnet and you have WS and Netware with 192.168.1.X addresses on a
172.16.1.0 network. Change your IP addresses on those two machines to put
them onto the 172.16.1.0 network.

Hi Vu,
Thank you for your clue about the Release Notes in another thread. But
more than what those notes recommend must be done. The compat libs are not
sufficently compatible to to do an install but they do work well enough to
actually use the database after install. For your inspection here is the

modification to this.

There should be a directory called mkisofs-x.y[.z] where x, y and z are
digits. Go to that directory, and do the following:
./configure
make
$ su
Passwd:
# make install
Voila! Mkisofs is installed into /usr/local/bin.
Make sure that you do not burn copyrighted music to your CDs as it is

Hello, its be <Debian User>. I did the dmesg, I don't think Linux even finds
my NIC. Its on IRQ 9. I think its IRQ problem. I did my SCAN PCI too, and
thats not seeming to work either. Do I need to turn of PNP like my 3com NIC
(THE BEST NIC THERE IS) ?
Thanks for your replies
Joel Comeaux wrote in message ...
Sounds like IRQ trouble. Try 'scanpci' and see if it lists your nic. Mine
shows "Lite-On LC82C115 PNIC II 10/100BaseTX" ...do you see anything like
that.
Also, you might try 'dmesg | less' to get a look at your boot-up messages.
See if your card is being detected.
Bit Twister's advice above seems good - I've had to do that in the past to
get other hardware working.
Let us know how it comes out or if you need more help.

You can use IP masquerade. I used it to give internet access to several
machines.
You only need to run three lines on the linux box.
You can find the 3 commands by looking for "ip masquerade"
in Linux HOWTO.

Subject: Mandrake kppp dialup problem
Date: 20 May 2001 21:08:26 -0700
Hi,
I am having difficulty etsbalishing connection with my ISP.
Here is my environment:
- Mandrake 7.2, external 56K USR modem
- I am using PAP authentication and kppp to dial
- Dynamic IP address (this is what my ISP assigns)
- Gateway is 'default gateway'
- Assign the default route to this gateway is ON
- Query Modem appears to run successfully
(I can dial the same ISP through windows fine!)
Here is what I've tried:
- I can dial and I hear the ISP modem accepting connection.
- The DNS entries and user/password appear correct.
- In the log window, I see
ATZ0ATM1L10ADDT4166400281
- Then in the status line 'Expecting: CONNECT'
- After connection "apparently" established,
I get about 50 garbage chars displayed and then kppp eventually hangs up
If anyone has experience with this, I would like to hear from you.
I don't mind manually configuring if I can be assured I am going to be successful :)
Thank you,
Mike
