of the RPM's from the second cd will install. I've tried checking them out with
the package manager utility and it says somthing like they're invalid rpm's.
Has anyone else had any problems like this? am i doing something terribly

Just boot the install media of the distro of your choice and go.
No other OS's presence is required at all.

You could always install Debian instead of RH. You don't even need to
reboot to do an OS upgrade then. It all can be done via network.

Your modem will work fine after you manually edit the '/etc/rc.d/serial'
file. You need root priviledges to do this. Open the file with your
favorite text editor and find the section titled 'MANUAL CONFIGURATION' .
Remove the '#' on one of the lines and change the specs to match your
modem....
run-setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16450A port ExC00 irq 5
Reboot and your modem should be found at /dev/ttyS3.
I worked for me when I was using kernel 2.2.18. Now that I am using kernel
2.4.0, my modem was identified automatically.

I followed the instructions on the Kernel-HOWTO:
* made a new kernel (bzImage)
* copied bzImage to /boot/bzImage.05212001
* modified lilo.conf and added Image05-21-2001
But that label didn't show up when I booted, presumably because i'm using
GRUB and not LILO (duh!). So I added my new kernel entry in menu.lst and
this time it appeared. And it seemed to boot ok, but how can I be sure I
booted the correct kernel?

I suspect that I forgot to allow incoming email when configuring the

Most linux distributions have a utility that will make a boot floppy
that wil get you to the point where the system will read the the linux cd
from the cd drive and from there you can just install right over the
existing dos. I have done similar now on several different computers
using caldera e2.4 and it went fine each time. Its smart enoug to figure
out all the hardware you have and install what it needs to get going.
Good luck!

A 16450A UART? I don't think so, you must mean a 16550A. There was a
16450 long ago that had a one byte buffer but they are likely extinct
by now. ExC00 must be a typographic error too since it looks like it
should be "port 0xec00" to me.

Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 03:29:12 GMT
I've just installed RH7.1 on an inexpensive box, which acheives
it's low expense by integrating many services onto the motherboard,
including audio, modem, ethernet, and (the problem here) video.
The install went smoothly enough; but I had to tell it not to bother
to "check the X configuration", because whenever it tried, the screen
locked up. So I completed the installation and studied the video
problem later.
I find that Xconfigurator correctly recognizes the video type,
and installs the correct module. And it will emit a working
XF86Config file... but only if <8-bit depth, or <=1024x768 resolution
is specified.
I want truecolor, at least 16 bits. But I also want at least 1280x1024
resolution. 1600x1200 prefered. There's plenty of memory devoted
to the video buffer: BIOS and Xconfigurator both agree that there's
16 mb available. But it always causes the screen to lock up.
Totally black appearance.
Any thoughts?

[that is, if you buy a CD, and make a tape, you are free to do so, as

Karl,
Beware of my info as I'm new to linux also but:
I have done similar but on two hard drives for an NT4 system. I found that it
would not work at all well if I tried to use the winnt bootloader to choose
which system to boot so in the bios I changed the hard drive to boot from to the
linux one and used the linux GRUB to do the boot and it works great.
here is where I found out how to do dual boot using GRUB with caldera linux
it will probably help you in your case also as it talks about partitions as well
as separate drives
http://www.ujoint.org/openlinux_help/FAQ/col_faq.php?num=4&f_id=2&s_id=5&q_id=35
which is from the FAQ at
http://www.ujoint.org/openlinux_help/FAQ/col_faq.php
and here is the menu file based on the links above that does it all from GRUB:
#
# /boot/grub/menu.lst - generated by Lizard
#
# options
timeout = 10
splashscreen = (hd0,0)/boot/message.col24
default = 0
title = Linux
root = (hd0,0)
kernel = /boot/vmlinuz-pc97-2.2.14-modular vga=274 debug=2 root=/dev/hda1
title = winNT
root (hd1,0)
makeactive
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
chainloader +1
Seems what it is doing is using the 'root' command to set which drive/partition
is used to boot from and then some trickery in the case of the nt boot...
Hope this helps, Jonny

Typing;
rpm -q glibc-devel
results in;
glibc-devel-2.1.3-15
So I assume it is installed.

OK!
So what else is the problem or what do I need to do?
