On my (SuSE) box:

ls -al /dev/dsp
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root            4 Mar 16 01:37 /dev/dsp -> dsp0

Where dsp0 is a character special file and has Major number 14 and
Minor 3 as you posted.

That means that eth0 is configured incorrectly or the module (driver) is
not available. Run 'netcfg' and configure it correctly.

This is probably due to the above (I assume your box is connected to the
cable modem via the ethercard)...

When you read a cd, you 'mount' it. Then the door cannot be opened
before you umount it. So unmount removable devices before ejecting them.

Is that all programs or a limited set of programs? What about console
commands?

Hi there !

I have the following problem:
I'm trying to install linux (SuSE 7.1) on an old 486SX.
But none of the bootdisks has math emulation (SX means no coprocessor)
built in (not even the one meant for old 386 computers.. grr).
There is also no CDROM available, so I have to use NFS install (which I
didn't get working with RedHat 7.0, that's why I don't use Redhat, although
RedHat bootdisks have math emulation).

Now I tried to compile a new kernel with math emulation and copy it over
the SuSE kernel on the bootdisk.
But the kernel panics: couldn't mount root filesystem ( I copied the
ramdisk word and root fs settings from the old kernel with rdev, but it
didn't help).

Can someone tell me how to build a install bootdisk for SuSE with math
emulation ? Any hints are welcome !

Ciao, Branko.

Many thanks for your reply!

I have two ethernet cards, one is a D-Link and the other is a Realtec. How
could I configure them? And where could I get the driver?

Zillion of thanks again for your help!

The drivers usually comes with the distribution. You should be able to
activate the correct drivers with 'kudzu' and configure their IP
information with 'netcfg'.

Wow. What a useful file. Great thing about linux is that nearly
everything you need to know is right there.

Rough thing about linux is that nearly EVERYTHING you MIGHT need to
know is there. Just no easy way to find it.

I think I"ll spend a little time in this directory, just to see what's
there. Thanks mucho.

I just installed RH 7.1 and I did NOT configure the firewall during the

I am trying to get the Apache web server and the FTP server up and
running. I went through the steps in RH's "Customization Guide" but I
can not connect to either server. From my linux system I CAN pull up my

web page but I can NOT access if from another system (i.e. from work).
How do I get access from outside my system, and let everyone else have
access too?

I also can not connect to my FTP server. I get an "access denied"
message. Someone told me that I needed to conffigure the "hosts.allow"
file by they didn't tell me how to do that. Any ideas what I need to do
to get www and web working? Thanks for any help.

You can make lilo stop at the boot: prompt waiting for you to enter a
correct label if you like. Man lilo.conf or look at your /etc/lilo.conf
file in debian. Mine is so heavily commented that I have to search some
times for actual things going on in there :)

Subject: Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI ES4815 (es1371) problem
Date: 26 May 2001 18:42:27 -0700

Hi, I'm running Debian 2.2r3 with kernel 2.2.19 on an Asus A7v w/Duron
650. I've got a Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card, on the top of
the box it claims "model ES4815". After a bit of trial and error
getting it to work a couple months ago, I found that the es1371 driver
works with it, so I have it compiled statically into the kernel, not
as a module.

My problem is that the driver seems to have weird issues with queueing
sounds when other sounds are playing, and with freezing for a
noticeable period of time after certain sounds are played, when trying
to play sounds from other programs.

First, the freezing problem. This primarly happens with the console
beep in KDE2's 'konsole' program. I can make the beep in konsole as
many times as I like with no problems, but after a beep has been
played in konsole, the sound driver goes into a weird state for around
30 seconds or more, where if any other program is loaded that tries to
play sounds (xmms, snes9x, rocknes, and so forth) there will either be
an error (rocknes says "Cannot find sound card"), or more commonly,
the program will simply freeze hard for 30 seconds or so, and then
start executing normally as soon as the driver decides it wants to
work again.

Secondly, the queueing problem. A good example of this is xmms +
gaim. When I'm playing mp3s in xmms, if events happen in gaim that
would normally cause a sound effect, I hear nothing... until the
current mp3 is done playing. Then, all the sound effects seem to be
played at once, that were made by gaim during the time the mp3 was
playing! This is, obviously, sub-optimal behavior. Interestingly, if
a console beep was made during mp3 play, it will often be played and
then the driver will freeze just like it does in the above
description, for some period of time, before it 'unfreezes' and xmms
goes to the next file in the playlist.

Any ideas if this is a fixable problem? It was present in 2.2.18 as
well as 2.2.19.

I'm a linux newbie too but I managed to build and run Apache within
about 15 mins or so. Make sure you bind Apache to your outside IP as I
think it defaults to localhost (none too useful).

Subject: Mandrake 8.0 install CD error
Date: Sat, 26 May 2001 18:48:28 -0700

I've run into a brick wall trying to install Mandrake 8.0
from CD. The CD boots fine and enters install Stage 2,
then says "VERSION file not found" and starts the graphical
installation. After selecting disk mount points, it says
"an error occurred basesystem package missing" and returns
to the filesystem setup screen.

It seems to act like it can't mount the CD and see the files
and directories on it, which is strange because it boots OK.

The CD drive is a Teac CDR55S SCSI CDR on a Tekram 390U2W SCSI
controller (Symbios/NEC53c895 BIOS). It works great
under Mandrake 7.2 and I had no trouble installing from it
then. But the Mandrake 8.0 installer seems broken for it.

I've tried disabling ROM cacheing in the BIOS, using text
expert mode and selecting the NCR53c895,0,3,0 driver - all
to no avail - the install still can't see files on the CD.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
