AFAIK, USR has two internal controller-based modems, ie. they're
OS-independent:
56K* Performance Pro Modem
http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=3CP5610A
56K* Internal Faxmodem ISA
http://www.usr.com/products/home/home-product.asp?sku=005687-03
A few weeks ago, I was looking for internal modems for Linux, but the
all the internals I found where softmodems, ie. they require a driver
to work.

You mean the partition that I'm mounting it to? That's ext2.
However, the share that I'm mounting is FAT32 (Windows 98).
But the mount command uses -t smbfs, and neither of those partition
types are mentioned in the command, so I'm not sure what any of this
means...

You might consider an Evergreen 133 MHz 586 cpu upgrade. On a 486SX33
Compaq it seemed to average most tasks about 2.5 times faster and includes
math coprocessor. Lack of RAM can also cripple an installation attempt.

I didn't see the start of this thread but I bet you mean
-I/usr/include/pgsql and -I/usr/include. (This last shouldn't

Forget Corel. I tried it when it first came out. Version 1. worked
"sott of". Version 1.1 was a disaster. I bought WordPerfect for Linux
and it sets in a box because, again it worked "almost". The
wordprocessor didn't work correctly under Corel or Redhat.
I am using Mandrake and love it.

I found that thread on Sourceforge...great tips! Pretty detailed.
I did the
rpm -q kernel-source
and got "kernel-source-2.4.2-2" so evidently the source code is installed.
So then I make the path in /usr/src:
"ln -s linux-2.4.2 linux" in the /usr/src directory, and all went well.
So I tried "make install20" again, and got a list of errors, but this time
they were all "...from incompatible pointer type" errors.
Any ideas? That thread on the Sourcefiorge doesn't address that error.
Thanks for your help!

A PS/2 mouse, if possible, might work better, since it uses the same
driver and device (not sure about wheel mouse). With my Sony laptop an
external mouse works simultaniously with its built-in mousepad (actually I
use wireless keyboard and mouse with transmitter plugged into Y-cable to
single PS/2 port on laptop).
With a Gateway 9300, an external mouse dectivates its mousepad, but it
seems to be hot pluggable, since unplugging the external mouse (or LCD
projector pointer) restores the mousepad.

OK, I've changed the mount command to mount it with my own user and
group id. This will work unless and until there are other users on
the system. I guess at that point, I'll set up different scripts for
their own shares...
I hoped that I could get around it by doing a chmod 666, but this
command has no effect on the smbfs-mounted shares.
Anyone know a fix?

Before reading this I formated the fat 32 partition. I havn't

Hi,
I read the CD Wrinting HOWTO while trying to setup up my cd recorder. Since
it is ATAPI, the tutorial says to include a couple of options into the
kernel. Unforunately I cannot find most of those option in my kernel config
(2.4.0). Specifically I am wondering about how to make kernel 2.4.0 include
a SCSI emulation layer.

Hard to say without knowing what distro, you are running. In RedHat it
is the "/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfslock" script, you need to look for.
Specifically prepend the line containing rpc.lockd with a '#'.

Did you edit /etc/rc.config.d/firewall.rc.config? It tells you what to
do. I still get those errors because I am using it for ppp0, which is not
up yet at that point, but the firewall/MASQ works when my ppp0 is
connected.
I am using kernel 2.4.3 with ipchains as a module with the SuSE firewall.
I cannot quite figure out how to forward inbound smtp through MASQ to an
internal server. Although, outgoing mail (using internet hostname) and
fetchmail works fine from that internal box on a private IP.
> I have also created a script with a firewall tool online but I don't know

You could probably run it from /etc/init.d/boot.local, but that would not
involve the SuSE firewall. Not sure what packet filtering is compiled in,
but even the included 2.4.0 kernel has ipchains support.

You have to enable SCSI support first though.

Subject: Kernel 2.4.4 vs Promise EIDEMaxII

I compiled Kernel 2.4.4 with 'make bzdisk' and first time when I boot with
this floppy, dots flow by (guess it's reading the kernel image). Then
display something like "OK. Uncompressing kernel" and hangs up. No more
activitiy either on hard disk or on floppy.
System specs:
IBM (very old) machine with Pentium 90, 64Mb SIMMs, 4.3Gb Fijutsu, Promise
EIDEMaxII (UDMA66) controller ISA card w/on-board BIOS (system BIOS won't
recognize more than 1.6G and hence this card)
Hard disk partition info:
Primary Partition - DOS - 250 Mb (/dev/hda1)
Extended Partition
Logical Partiton - ext2 - 3xxxMb (/dev/hda5)
Logical Partition - Linux Swap - 5xxMb
At the end of 'make bzdisk' these are the msgs.....
===============
Root device is (3,5)
Boot Sector 512 bytes
Setup is 2387 bytes
System is 684 Kb
dd bs=8192 if=bzImage of=/dev/fd0

85+1 records out

All help is appreciated.

It still will be possible to recover almost all files, but it can be
more or less difficult depending on how fragmented the files were. By
formatting the partition you destroyed the second FAT copy.
Lost and Found or other recovery programs may be able to copy files to
another disk.
The partition could easily have been fully recovered.

include the ide-scsi driver. it can also be loaded via modules.conf
there's a script in that how-to that you can run to set everything up, assuming
the kernel has ide-scsi as a loadable module (the default at least with RH)

I tried the Ultra-DMA mini-HOWTO at

Yeah, I burned my own CD's. I downloaded from the ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu
mirror. I really hope this isn't the problem, as I don't want to order it.

Subject: problems with alsa

I have Red Hat 7 running on a Toshiba Satellite 1710 and have been trying to
get ALSA to work as it offers support for the CS4281 sound card. On make I
get a lot of error messages - most of which I don't understand but I believe
my problem may lie in the following boot up messages from /var/log :-
1. Can't locate module sound-slot-0
2. Can't locate module sound-service-0-3
If I try to run sndconfig it simply tells me that the cs4281 card is not
supported - presumably by OSS.
Anyone have any ideas?
