Without specifying exactly what motherboard you are using and what
distribution of Linux you are attempting to install you are not going to
get a sane answer.
FYI, however, the best distro to install if you are going to install Oracle
8 is RedHat-6.2. You cannot install Oracle with RedHat-7 or 7.1 or any
other distro which uses glibc-2.2.X. The compatibility feature of RH-7.1
will allow you to run Oracle after install, but the actual install will
crash.

Did you invoke a mixer and turn the volume up?

It doesn't necessarily have to be that way, it's just the default.

Most likely your partition table is corrupted; it's easy to hose up
a Win* system that way, as the bootloader and all the relevant Win* tools
(like fdisk.exe) are very limited in its capabilities. I'd suspect
that probably your Win* partition has been assigned a different
partition id, this rendering Win* unbootable. Another possible reason
would be a changed partition layout. If you did, however, have some
sort of diskmanager software installed, then you're on your own.
EZ-Disk and similar tools change the partition table layout in a
way that makes restoring it close to impossible. Just try to remove
EZ-Disk from a disk once you don't need it anymore; it's hopeless
without manually overwriting the relevant sectors.
Please show us your partition table as reported by Linux' fdisk.

Subject: Dual Boot Win2K and Linux
Date: 30 May 2001 03:32:35 -0700
Hi,
I would like to install Win2K in place of my present Win98SE.
Presently have Win98SE dual booting with my Mandrake 7.2 using Grub.
I'd like 3 questions answered before I do this :
1) Is it true that Linux will not mount NTFS 5.0 partitions?
Thus effectively only allowing me to install my Win2K on FAT32?
2) Is there any chance I can retain my present GRUB bootloader and not
have to change to the Win2K one?
3) In relation to the previous question, What kind of complications
will arise as a result of Win2K being installed 2nd?
Usually I know Windows has to be the first installed OS then
afterwards running FIPS and Partition Magic, we then put in Linux.
Yes, my windows "C:" is the first partition (PRI)on the HDD.
Followed by a Linux /boot partition and the rest all sit in
extended... .
Thanks,
irVIng

Find a program on your 7.1 box called FTPD Editor - which is the easiest way
to configure your requirements.

I found a solution...
enter the following when booting the install disk
all ide2=0x180,0x386
This works, I'd previously used linux ide2=0x180,0x386
Can someone tell me what the 'all' actually is?

Thanks. Problem solved. I'll tell my chief, so we will save much effort
and time!
I think I'll install 7.1 next time !!!
If I manage, I will send technical data requested (my PC is
unreacheable, now), as I'm interested in solving this problem.

Date: 30 May 2001 12:38:48 GMT
Hello, I'm french.
at present i make my work placement in D'arva, I have a problem with syslog
under Linux.
Indeed, I would like to get back the logs of a switch in a file which I have to
create in /Var/log/switch.log
In the syslog program, I added -r to the daemon syslogd to allow the reception
of the distant network. I modified the syslog.conf file in etc/syslog.conf by
adding it the line
IPadress.* /Var/log/switch.log
I have already to try
@hostname.* /Var/log/switch.log
by adding IPadress hostname in the file hosts
( I restart the daemon has every time) but I get back nothing in my switch.log
file ................
If somebody has a solution for my pb..........
Thank you in advance
I m ' apaologize for my bad English

Can you be more specific? My RedHat distribution comes with 2.4.2-2 kernel.
What's different about this kernel versus anyone else's 2.4.2-2 kernel?
At the moment I have no way to verify your statement, because the directory
problems that I described in my earlier message prevent the alsa-drivers
from even compiling (can't find the ".h" files).
