I am running Red Hat Linux 6.2, P133MHz, 64MB RAM. I have an Adaptec
AHA-1542CF with a floppy controller but do not know how to address the
floppy controller to mount the floppy drive. What is the device called?

Is there a way to boot from this as if it were controlled by the motherboard
much like what is controlled in the BIOS?

Read http://www4.ncsu.edu/~distclai/rage128-howto.html .

I had a similar problem, and the solution provided there worked.

first, make sure you have the latest Samba. earlier versions would work with
2000, but had subtle problems. then, is the Linux box in the same workgroup?
samba.conf will let you announce the shares to another workgroup, which
should let the 2000 box see it. see the samba docs for some more info.

I know it really shouldn't mater, but how about adding
default=linux

to lilo.conf and see if that fixes it... It's a long shot, but who knows...

That floppy controller appears as a standard ISA bus floppy controller.

It will clash with a floppy controller built in to the motherboard if you do
not disable either it or the motherboard floppy controller.

There's either a DIPswitch or an Adaptec BIOS setting to change that, can't
remember which.

If you are using GNOME, check your screensaver.

If it is set to "RANDOM SCREENSAVER", change it to "NO SCREENSAVER.

The first question would be: are you burning your own installation CDs?
Next, are you using official distributions or GPLed versions?

If you are burning your own, try checking how you create the image. It's
possible that you can read the CD fine, but that it's not bootable. Can you boot
the CD on another PC?

I just installed 7.1 and the setup procedure did not find my network card.
6.2 always did.

Never the less... I was going to run netconf and set it up but it is not
there any longer as well as linuxconf. What are you supposed to use to setup
the eth0 device now?

What is the easiest way to setup the network card?

Thanks...

Nice idea, but no... It didn't work...

This old server I got shure is nice, with loads of possibilities, but it
shure is unstable...

I'm about to compile the latest lilo I could find, who knows? It might just
work then...

1. check if the driver is compiled and your network card is working,
2. use ifconfig to configure the card and "take it up".
3. setup the routing with route

Read the NETx-HOWTO.

I am not using GNOME and any graphic applications, so it is not the problem
of screensaver. In my memory, this happen after I added something in
syslog.conf like:
kern.* /var/log/kernel
and add some lines to the /etc/logrotate.d/syslog, to allow the new syslog
file to be rotated as well.
But, it may not be true, because I had remove anything I added, my Linux
still reading hard disk per 5 seconds.

Thanks for your help Nils. It sure got me on the right way. I got it to work
by putting these lines in fstab:

dev/hda1 /mnt/win98 vfat -t 0 0
dev/hdb2 /mnt/win_e vfat -t 0 0

It also took a while, even if I saw you wrote it, to understand that I had to
make to knew directories in /mnt.

Wow! Linux is such fun. It it wasn't for gameplaying I'll skip Microsoft
Windows for good.

It really turns my imagination and it's fun to learn new things all the time.

I did burn my own installation CDs, from iso images downloaded from
mirrors of the redhat and mandrake ftp sites. So I guess they're
official in some sense. Obviously most of the software on the CDs is GPLed.

Yes, the reason I do not suspect the CDs themselves is that they boot
fine on many other machines (a variety of Dell and IBM desktop
machines). Of the PCs I have access to, only this laptop won't boot
these CDs. It's possible there is some glitch that the other machines
don't mind, but I haven't heard from anyone that that's liable to be the case.

One other detail I neglected to mention is that the drive is a DVD/CD-R drive.

Thanks for any help...

I read in another posting that you have to enable PNP on some 3Com cards.
Does this apply in your case? I just went through the SAME pains in the
last two weeks and my solution for RH7.0 was to disable the PNP, something
some people here helped me out with (thank you very much! :>). But
unfortunately I might have to re-enable the PNP support again if I'm going

Good luck.

Services are started at boot by scripts in the /etc/rc.d/init.d
directory and symlinks to those scripts in /etc/rc.d/rc[0-6].d
Normally you don't touch those scripts or links manually, but use a
tool like chkconfig or ntsysv. Modules for devices are defined in
/etc/modules.conf.

You reinstalled the OS, and it picked it up this time? Good for you! I
tried that too many times to remember. :< I was getting more and more
frustrating. When Linux works, from what I've seen, it's great. But when
it doesn't, man, is it frustrating. :<

So, in your opinion, is RH7.1 stable enough to upgrade to? I had plans to
upgrade to it as soon as I could get net access, but now I'm not so sure
anymore.

Good luck with it.
