Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 20:12:22 GMT
I have downloaded and installed a new kernel source (2.2.14). I have
run "make xconfig" followed by "make dep" successfully. When I run
"make xImage" I get the following script:
# make zImage
scripts/split-include include/linux/autoconf.h include/config
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux-2.2.14/include -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -02 -
fomit-frame-pointer -fno-strict-aliasing -D__SMP__ -pipe
-fno-strength-reduce -
c -o init/main.o init/main.c
init/main.c: In function 'start_kernel':
init/main.c:1413: too few arguments to function 'dcache_init"
make: ***[init/main.o] Error 1
Can anyone tell me how to correct this error.?
Thanks in advance

How do you make the crontab not email the root every time?
I commented out the line in /etc/crontab
#mailto=root
and I restarted the cron:
crontab /etc/crontab
It still sends root email every time job is complete.

Carlos,
did you ever get your network configuration to work for @home? I just
got the same service and am trying to figure out the same thing.

You don't write anything about killing crond before restarting it.
In addition, I believe the above mentioned command just sets the
"active" crontab file for the active user.
On a RedHad'ish system I'd go for:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/crond restart
Or in general:
killall -HUP crond
Beware, usually you edit crontab by doing 'crontab -e' and _not_ by
editing /etc/crontab by hand.

For SuSE you can check their website at
http://www.suse.com/support/security/index.html
which also has information about joining their mailing lists for security
and general stuff.
For general non-distro specific information you can try
http://www.linuxsecurity.com/
Places like http://www.linuxtoday.com/ can keep you up to date with general
security flaws as they become known which is where I usually spot these
things first.

If you didn't get a static ip from @home, then you would need to setup
your system to use the DHCP client; RH calls theirs "pump" and suse calls
theirs "dhclient". It is safe to say that @home is using dhcp for your
system unless you are paying extra for static nowadays.

Hmm I just noticed that there is a problem building the pcmcia cardmgr
utilities with the
above mentioned sources. The Makefile picks up the includes from
/usr/src/linux/
I noticed this because the Changes file recommends pcmcia version 3.1.13
and my cardmgr
reported 3.1.11. The 3.1.11 is coming from
/usr/src/linux/include/pcmcia/version.h
and a quick glance at the code I see that it will be picking up a number
of potentially
out of sync include files. Anyone know who to report this to? I'm not
really sure this
is a pcmcia bug or kernel bug.

do a make clean after you do make dep, and instead of zImage, use bzImage.
Then do 'make modules modules_install'

I have just downloaded Mandrake 7.1, and I have a problem--I can't find the
proper drivers for my NIC card--and SMC EZ-10/100 1211-TX. SMC's download
page has the source code, but because I'm not a programmer and I'm new to
Linux, I am lost because there's no driver for this NIC card in the initial
list (during setup).

Any luck with this installation. I have the same chip on a Dell and am
having the same problem.

Download and unpack the source code into an empty directory. If the file ends
in .tar.gz or something like that, type gunzip [file you downloaded] and then
tar xvf [file you downloaded - .gz]. Then look for a readme file. Follow the
instructions contained in there. for compiling, and installing. If it is not
found, then try to find a file called Makefile or makefile. If you find one,
try 'makeing' it by typing make. It should work. If you dont find a readme or
Makefile or makefile, then you have to compile the program manually. That could
be tricky.
Good Luck,
Dusty

Subject: PCI Modem Resource Here
Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 19:07:43 -0500
Unfortunately there aren't many PCI modems compatible with
Linux. I purchased an Actiontec PCI56012-01CW modem and did
get it to work with a PR440FX board. The only problem is
the instructions or my interpretation of them didn't work.
I did find a resource at www.math.sunysb.edu/~comech/tools/
PCImodems.html by Andrew Comech that I found very helpful.
The instructions there for the Actiontec modem worked for
me except I used ttyS4. All your com programs have to be
changed to /dev/modem after you do the install.
This is how I did it based upon Andrews' instructions:
I did the cat /proc/pci command and got three I/O addresses.
the first one said I/O at 0xf800 and I used that one.
It gave me an interrupt as irq 18.
I then did the following commands:
cd /dev
test -c ttyS4 || ./MAKEDEV ttyS4
chmod 666 /dev/ttyS4
setserial /dev/ttyS4 uart 16550A port 0xf800 irq 18
ln -sf /dev/ttyS3 /dev/modem
Make sure you use the cat /proc/pci command in order
to see what addresses and interrupt your own machine
uses and don't just use the ones above unless the command
returns the same values as mine.
I put the setserial /dev/ttyS4 uart 16550A port 0xf800 irq 18
in /etc/rc.d/modules so my Slack 7.1 system initializes it
every time it boots. Good luck to all!
Best regards,
Kurt Savegnago

Or, you can try command >/dev/null 2>&1. That redirects all output to the null
device, the black hole for data. It doesn't give any output.
Good Luck,
