Hello,
Video card? Is this an upgrade and from what?
Look in /etc/X11.
Is there a symlink X pointing to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86?
Is your XF86Config-4 file there? Is it correct? Is it corrupted?

Subject: changing the time??
Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 11:32:20 -0500
It seems like I shouldn't have to come here for help on this but I just
don't feel like spending hours on just changing the time of the day.
I am so used to Windows that I guess I have convinced myself that
seemingly petty little tasks such as this should be easy in Linux. I am
finding otherwise, I think.
I just installed a new Debian system on one of my disks. I specifically
remember the install program asking me about setting the time. Well,
I thought I followed its instructions correctly. In fact, I remember it
saying that if I selected GMT it would correct the time according to the
time zone I selected. I am using GNOME and in the "task bar" (is it
still called that in Linux?) it is giving me the wrong time. Does
anyone know how you change that? I feel stupid asking this but when you
select properties on the clock it just gives you the option of 12 hour
or 24 hour display of time. Obviously this is no help when the time is
wrong in the first place. I don't know of any Linux command to change
the time. Am I missing something here? How many hoops do I have to
jump through just to change the freaking time??
Feeling very stupid/vunerable/ignorant/embarressed/pissed!!

Thanks for your reply. I don't think I have /autofs in my /init.d
directory. I don't know if its a Mandrake 8.0ism. I do feel your on the
right track though, because the hardware setup and fstab are exactly the
same as they were when both drives worked fine before. More help possibly.

Running Mandrake 8.0 and I've already run the fstab and permissions route
on this problem. I am confident I have ownership as root of the /mnt/cdrom
and /mnt/cdrom2 directory. Nevertheless I am locked out of the folders and
the terminal I get an i/o error. Gui filebrowser gives me "you do not have
permission to access these files" when I try to access the /mnt/cdrom
directories. I'm only left with the fact that I did something trying to
add cdwriter support via the scsi module hdc=ide-scsi emulation thing. My
fstab is exactly the same as it was before I tried any of this. The only
thing you'll notice odd in my fstab is that I'm using /mnt/plexcdrom and
/mnt/kenwood as the mount folders. I only did that to see if I would still
get locks on those new folders and yes I did. Otherwise the fstab is
factory correct. Can anyone tell me of some possible embedded symlinks
that might be doing this? Here's my fstab FYI

I did a clean install. I used to have RH 6.2 on here.
The card is a generic agp with S# Virge GX chip. I chose same card as on
6.2.
I believe there is something in that system that the 7.1 setup doesn't like.
One time I got an error about being unable to load a library. I didn't write
it down. The other times it seemed to install without a problem but X
wouldn't run.
The first time I installed X ran ok but the network card did not.

Had about the same problem with the chip on my Epox board. One day I
found a Redhat subdir somewhere on the driver CD. Never tried the drivers
though, since I already had another soundcard installed :-)

Look in /usr/lib for libstdc++-libc6.x.y.so.z - if there is no such file then install
the appropriate package which might be newer than the required version. Create a
symbolic link as described below if the version does NOT match Netscape's requested
version.

Sounds like possibly something didn't install correctly, maybe glibc or
XFree86. You might try running rpm -V filename and see if it shows any
errors or rpm -Va to check all the installed rpms (this will take awhile).
Did you burn these cd's yourself? Did you check the md5sum of the ISO
images before you burned them? Maybe the image didn't download correctly.
The "unable to load a library" error is suspicious.
Did you try running Xconfigurator:
Xconfigurator --preferxf3

Subject: Fat32 partition missing... Help!
Date: Wed, 6 Jun 2001 16:47:14 -0500
I just installed Redhat over a previous Linux installation. My system dual
boots Win98 and Linux. First, here's how my hard drives are currently set
up, with the information taken from fdisk:
/dev/hda1 Linux (Boot)
/dev/hda2 Extended
/dev/hda3 Win95 FAT32 (Note: I've also tried assigning this to (LBA), like
/dev/hdb1. No luck)
/dev/hda5 Linux
/dev/hda6 Linux swap
/dev/hdb1 Win95 FAT32 (LBA) (Boot)
When I attempt the command "mount -t vfat /dev/hda3 /mnt/d-drive", I get
this error:
[MS-DOS FS Rel. 12,FAT16,check=n,conv=b,uid=0,gid=0,umask=022,bmap]
[me=0x43,cs=10550,#f=82,fs=38614,fl=1548050,de=134,data=128682700,se=2174,ts
=-1071265339,ls=26102,rc=0,fc=4294967295]
Transaction block size = 512
VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 03:03.
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda3, or too many
mounted file systems
So, my question is basically twofold:
1) How do I get Win98 to recognize my Fat32 partition on /dev/hda?
2) How do I mount this partition with Linux?
I hope I don't end up losing the data on my missing partition... Please cc:

I did download the cd's. I am starting to wonder about them.
I am not sure how to check the crc of the image. I will dig around and see
if that is the case. I hope it is. It is very strange that the old version
works fine and 7.1 does not.
Thank you for the suggestions. I will check into them.

Log in as root and look for something (probably in the System
menu) called Time Tool. That will permit you to Set System Clock.
I have to do this periodically. Because something is not quite right
(probably) in my /usr/share/zoneinfo file, every time I reboot, the
clock in the panel (I think this is what you are calling the "time
bar") shows GMT--despite the fict that it "knows" what time zone I'm
in. I just change it to local time and go.
I hope someone else answers your question. The answer may help me with
my problem as well.

To provide more information you can download Findpart at
http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/utilities.htm
do
findpart all fp.txt
and post the content from fp.txt.
I recommend that you do not write anything to hda until the nature of
the problem is known.

Hi,
I've just recently downloaded and installed SuSE 7.1. I'm having a
weird problem when I'm in my Yahoo email account.
If I select the checkboxes next to the messages that I want to delete
or move and hit the "Delete" button, nothing happens. Its like the
browser isn't even recognizing the state of the boxes, even though
they display the little check mark.
If I go into one of the message and hit "Delete", it works.
I haven't currently found any other sites I frequent to test out the
'checkbox' theory elsewhere. Has anyone else seen this type of
behavior?
I've replicated this behavior with Konqueror, Communicator 4.77, and
Netscape 6.0.
All help appreciated.
Thanks.

"Second FAT not found"... Hmm... Of course, given that you're the guy who
actually WROTE this program (impressive!), I'm sure you'll have some insight
as to how I would go about fixing it... I'm open to deleting my Linux
partitions, and reinstalling Linux in a better mannor, if that might help.
Thanks again for the help!

I noticed from your hardware discription that it is a gateway
computer. Is the SBLive! the digital one that comes with the gateway?
or a standalone pci card? The reason I ask is 'cause if it's the
SBLive! digital that comes onboard with the gateway it probably won't
work ;-( If it's not, and it's a SBLive! that you bought seperatly
then it will work. The reason is there is something flaky about the
gateway card, I read this on the opensource.creative.developers
mailing list. I strongly suggest that you goto
http://opensource.creative.com and follow the links on subscribing to
the email list for this card. I personally have the SBLive!, bought
from compusa, and it is a very very good card, so all this won't be a
wast of time.
