I don't think it depends on modules.conf: actually root and normal users
share the same modules.conf and root is able to use all devices with no
problem at all.

When I try to mount a cdrom I get no kernel message at all on the
console, the only message (on the shell) is from mount itself saying
that /dev/sr0 is unknown.

No longer needed? Try to ask cdrecord to burn a cd on a non-scsi burner!

Nevertheless, thinking it does not make it so. You must check. Use
something that you can see (with modprobe -c) is aliased correctly.

I don't believe you. Whilst adm capabilities can be distinguished (more
than just raw issuperuser) in recent kernels, you'd have had to go to
considerable lengths to activate capability support, and so you'd
certainly know about it. I can certainly tell you that modprobe and kmod
and modules.conf works fine for all human beings here on my 2..4*
kernels.

I believe it is /dev/scd0, not sr0.
Try it with floppy.

So, you ARE using a scsi emulation on an IIIDE cdrw?
Do your tests of kmod/modprobe/modules.conf using something that you
know you have the right referent for. E.g /dev/audio or /dev/fd0.

apsfilter does not have built-in support for printing to a Novell printer,
but...
Try setting it up to print to a Windows | NT (samba) printer and then
modify /etc/apsfilter/apsfilterrc and /etc/apsfilter/lp/apsfilterrc to get
the nprint command executed. If that fails, you can try to modify the
actual filter in <base_dir>/apsfilter/bin/apsfilter.

I'd do software RAID in your case. I couldn't justify the
extra cost for a fancy raid card when the Linux kernel's
software RAID ought to do just fine in a two-disk RAID-1
situation.

We stay away from Adaptec Hardware. Adaptec does not support Linux directly
very well. Waranty is badly given. (as we know and tried in Germany).
That's why we prefer ICP-vortex Raid controllers,
because they give complete support and waranty for Linux. For trouble
shooting the ICP Support phones back within a few minutes.
(Checked on builing a 4.8 TeraByte Array, the support came back after
30 minutes, patch for the problem after 2 hours, via eMail.)
Price is equal. ICP perfoms IMHO much better support.
The addiditonal RAID control utilities are for ICP in Linux also.
ICP was the first company with all-around Linux support and waranty.

Okay, doesn't the above suggest that there might be a network problem in
place. Can you ping the host: "131.175.122.44" from the command line. It
would appear that something is blocking the ping request to your server host.
It is either the result of your client not being configured correctly for the
network or network communication problems, or a firewall which seems to be
blocking incoming/outgoing requests on the client or server for pings.
Check to make sure that both machines are able to ping one another.
See ya

RH uses xconfig(very basic), or XF86Config(not sure on the case of the c, it

Hi,
I'm new to Linux and I'm trying to set my box up to use PPP. I have read

been unsuccessful. Here are the details:
My chat script looks like this:

TIMEOUT 30 \
'OK' 'ATDT3016013254' \
'CONNECT' '' \
'Username: ' '<my user name>' \
'Password: ' '<my password>' \
'' 'ppp negotiate'
The command I issue to run pppd is as follows:
/usr/sbin/pppd name vuppun debug modem crtscts /dev/ttyS0 115200 asyncmap A0000
kdebug 0.0.0.0:0.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 noipdefault defaultroute

However, I get the message "Connect script failed".

You might also put your desired module loading commands into a file

What you're describing sounds like a virtual desktop.
Look at your XF86Config file down where the "Screen" Section
is. Under each "Display" subsection, you'll probably see
some modes listed along with a line that says "Virtual"
and a couple of numbers. This is the line that gives you
your virtual desktop. Delete that line, restart X, and see if the
problem clears up.

You can't do this with /etc/hosts, it's designed to give a one-to-one
lookup. You'd have to put every conceivable domain name in the file
and match it to your local IP address. Kind of a tall order.
Actually, I don't think you can do it with named, either, as there are
also one-to-one correspondences in the config tables in a DNS server,
at least for the zone for which that server is authoritative.
It might be simpler if you were to write your own name server program
and just
have it return a pre-defined IP address for all queries.
