I am using a Linux system that I built from discrete packages (about 125)
from GNU, and other free source projects.
I am quite concerned about the variety of methods used to configure and
install packages.
Most use the GNU Autoconf facility, but a lot have hackable Makefile's
Without simply using one of the Distribution vendors (RedHat, Suse,
Mandrake, etc)
Is there any action or project currently under way to unify the discrete
(non distribution modified) tar.gz packages?
If there is no such project, does anyone want to start one ?

Hi,
I use the same card in Mandrake with the 2.4 kernel-- seems to use oss driver.
Also worked with 2.2.17 kernel though it might have used alsa then, not sure.
Perhaps someone who uses RH 6.2 will know the procedure for making sure the
modules are installed (or downloaded and installed) and enabled.
In MK 7.2 sndconfig did not work though the card did. In MK8.0 (kernel 2.4)
sndconfig id's the card and plays Linus pronouncing his name.
If I do cat /etc/modules.conf I get
....
....
alias sound-slot-0 ymfpci
post-install snd-card-ymfpci modprobe snd-pcm-oss
cat /proc.pci produces
...
...
Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Multimedia audio controller: Yamaha Corporation YMF-724F [DS-1 Audio
Controller] (rev 3).
IRQ 10.
Master Capable. Latency=32. Min Gnt=5.Max Lat=25.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe1000000 [0xe1007fff].
I realize this I haven't been a great deal of help other than to tell you that
there IS a way to get the card working.

Hi peter: thanks for the email. I think that the imap-2000 that
ships with mandrake/redhat already has the ssl interface wrap
built-in. Of course, I am not 100%, if only because it lacks
documentation...

Either figure out where it wants the certs, or use something else -
something where you can figure out where it wants the certs.
BTW, strace shoudl help you in either case.

So use something else, or get the docs for it off the author! Write.

No .. the choice is yours. Either do as I suggest and follow the
standard path (sslwrapped imap), or complain to RH about missing docs
for their alternative offering - that's a grade 1 bug, or figure it out
yourself, or ask the author.

Hello:
I need to know how to enable root ftp access under Red Hat 7.1 and
the wu-ftp daemon. This will not be a security threat in this particular
situation, as the firewall does not allow ftp access from outside the LAN.
Thank you,

I understand your confusion. The new Mandrake 8.0 fstab looks weird
compared to others. It's default entries for the cdrom look like this:
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660, dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
I agree that most other distributions have a dev link and a mount link, but
nonetheless I have tried to follow the format of the default existing fstab
and that is probably the most confusing part. I think that there are
symlinks or shortcuts that I don't know about. It is possible to use the cd
writer as a cd reader normally, isn't it?
thanks

I installed RH7.1 on my system. When i give the command shutdown -h now the
computer closes and turns te power off (ATX).
Now i compiled my kernel and now the computer doesn't turn of the power
anymore, it stops with the message power down, but the power stays on. When
i boot with the original kernel it works ok, but is i boot with my compiled
kernel it doesn't work. Also another kernel version doesn't help.
I have the same problem with another computer running RH6.2
I tried to compile the kernel with APM on, off and other option regarding
APM, with no luck.
Does anybody have an idea ?
Frank.

If you don't even know enough to enable root ftp access, then how do you
expect to have configured your firewall to keep skiddiez out?
There is _no_ need whatever for root ftp access in any network.

Hi Dan,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 2650 XDVD and experienced the same
problem with my distribution (SuSE 7.2).
SuSE explains in their manual, that they are using 2.88 MB
boot images on 2 of 3 bootable CDROM/DVD and that some
BIOSes won't support images of that size, so that those
CDROM/DVDs are not detected as bootable.
This is indeed the case for my Toshiba, because the one of the
7 CDROM/DVD with a classic 1.44 MB boot image on it boots fine.
I have no idea whether there is a BIOS fix from Toshiba that
might fix this problem.
Regards,
Guido

There's noting weird about it (except the supermount fstype, and its
strange option)....
Personally I'd remove any reference to supermount here, and remove
supermount from the system!
I prefer to use autofs if anything, because you can write a script
that does "anything" when you try and look at /mnt/cdrom, including
mounting the cdrom, or blowing a raspberry at you!

Did you want that? That sounds highly strange to me! If I wanted to
turn off the thing at the mains, I would.

That's what's "supposed" to happen. You need an ATX powersupply if you
want to do any more, and you want to talk to it.
> I tried to compile the kernel with APM on, off and other option regarding
> APM, with no luck.
You don't need luck. Those are all the possibilities for compilation,
and they're unneccessary as compilation options since apm is a module!
Now what module params did you try? Did you make sure to disable apci?
(something that wasn't possible until recently, if you compiled it in).

* 1.1: support user-space standby and suspend, power off after system

MODULE_PARM(debug, "i");
MODULE_PARM_DESC(debug, "Enable debug mode");

and prove that apm is running.

You tell us everything about your system except the item which troubles
you, the video display! What kind of an adapter is it and are you using
XFree86-4 or XFree86-3? The Mandrake installer probably gave you the
choice of which to use and the option to test the configuration. Didn't
you do that test?
Did you even get to the point in the install where the video display gets
configured?
