add dhcpcd -h cr123456-a at the last line of file /etc/rc.local
it simply works.

To make it short.
AGP video card Trident Blade 3D based on 9880 chip.
Cannot be recognised by SVGA server in Slack 7.1, so had to resort to
frame buffering, and have GUI.
Went "potato" (Debian). Zilch?!
Not even starting console screen when invoking vga=xyz in LILO.

Advice please.

Stanislaw.

(Considering going back to S3, but maybe help can arrive before that)

I found them for about 160.00 each off of pricewatch. I ordered two of them
to replace the one western digital drive I have which I think is suspect.

Thanks for the reply on the hdparm and via stuff also. I am gonna keep on
eye on this system. The other has a KT7A chipset which is also affected by
the VIA problem according to the output from the via ide driver and lspci.

I don't think I would give up on the athlon stuff from this; but it was
worth the lesson learned :)

     Greetings from Bullwinkle:
Try adding this line to /etc/modules.conf
         alias ethX 3c509
X should be 0 for the first "lan" card, 1 for the second, and so
    forth.

Subject: Lilo-only bootdisk creation
Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 03:42:33 GMT

I want to make a new bootdisk for my Linux system (Debian 2.2r2). For the
moment, I want the system booting from bootdisk only, as I want to leave my
DOS/Windows bootup untouched for the other users of the computer.
Is it possible to make a bootable disk which will simply load Lilo and get
it to boot Linux off my Linux partition? I looked at the howto on making
bootdisks and rootdisks, but they involved putting a complete compressed Linux
system on the disk.
>From what I can see, having a compressed Linux system on the bootdisk means
slow bootup and it doesn't achieve anything, since I'm using the linux system
on the hard drive. Can anyone help?

OK, did this.

OK, did this. No complaints, just a prompt.

Did this. Locked up system instantly. Had to do a hard reboot, and
run fsck manually.

>If /dev/dsp*, /dev/mixer*, /dev/audio* etc. don't exist, they can be
>created with the command "/sbin/MAKEDEV audio".

Tried it after rebooting, as root. "No such file or directory ..."

However, /dev/MAKEDEV audio did work...

But after running it, the system locked up again when I tried to cat a
wave file to /dev/dsp...

After rebooting again, I did verify that /dev/dsp (as well as
/dev/dsp1) exists.

What now?

Subject: SCSI Challenge
Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 05:00:58 GMT

I'm installing Mandrake SNF (7.2) on P166 with 128mb ram with an
Adaptec 1520 SCSI card and a 1 gig SCSI HD. When I get to the part
were mandrake attempts to
probe my SCSI card it fails. So I manually select the card from the
list (152x) and it attempts to auto probe my settings and fails. I then
have the opportunity to manually enter in the settings. The dialog box
has the following:

AHA152x1 (1-8i) ________
AHA152x1 (1-8i) ________

anybody know what I need to put in here to get the 1520 card to work?

Here's the info I got form win2k IRQ11 and I/O 0x0340-0x035f I'd like
to get Mandrake SNF (7.2) running on it.

Thanx in advance

Thanks for all the great information, Mike P., Rob, and others!

Where can I find the current black list? I'm using RH7.1, which
I think means I'm using kernel 2.4.2 or thereabouts, so I'm almost
up-to-date kernel-wise.

Thanks again for all the info (and cautions)!

Each Linux distribution has its own recommendations and scripts to manage
the
startup/shutdown sequences. The file "rc.local" may not even be a viable
option
on your machine unless you either have documented support from the
distributor,
or roll-your-own support from your own design. I've done all of the above
and
noted many differences between distributions:

This lists your card as #465 on the version I have. Your list might be
