You really want to do it? Probably you should wait until rpms for
4.1.0 are available. Well, on the other hand, if you screw it, you
can always re-install your rpms.
You have a graphical login, so your default runlevel is 5.
1) Exit your desktop . Now you should see your
graphical login screen.
2) Press CTRL-ALT-F2, that should give you a console.
3) Login as root and type 'telinit 3' (without quotes) to switch to
runlevel 3.If the graphical login appears, kill it with
CTRL-ALT-BSPC, probably you have to do it twice. You should now
have a root console.
4) Change to the dir containing the installation files.
5) Read carefully the instructions in 'Install'. You have to decide
if you want to do an automatic or manual installation. In any case
you should back up your /etc/X11 and /usr/X11R6. If you do an
automatic update make sure that you answer all question concerning
your configuration files with 'n'.
6) After finishing re-boot your system and cross your fingers.
Another way would be:
Move your existing installation out of the way with 'mv /etc/X11
/etc/X11_old' and 'mv /usr/X11R6 /usr/X11R6_old'
Run 'sh Xinstall.sh' to do a complete fresh install.
Configure x with xf86config.
Copy the old config files from gdm to your new installation.
This way you get a clean installation, but you may have problems
configuring your graphical login.

The above looks sheer rubbish to me. Possibly a badly misremembered or
poorly transcribed (NEVER interpret, always include) X version 4
XF86Config-4 section.
For an X 3.3.6 you would need something like the following.
Section "Pointer"
Device "/dev/mouse"
#Protocol "MouseManPlusPS/2" # for ps/2 wheel mouse
#Protocol "IMPS/2" # for ps/2 wheel mouse
Protocol "PS/2" # for ps/2 mouse
#Buttons 3
#ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndDection
For X version 4, yes, something along your lines, but correctly
and carefully written.

Have you updated all necessary packages to the minimum required
versions? If not read ./Documentation/Changes in the source tree

1st) Is /dev/hda1 normally / ?
That is what 0301 means (look at /dev/hda1 with ls -l, it has
major num 3, minor num 1)
2nd) What filesystem do you have on / ? ext2?, reiserfs?, umsdos?
You must compile in the relevant fs in the kernel. If its
ext2 (guessing here) then
ext2 support must be built in to the kernel, NOT as a module.
You've probably not included enough to mount the rootfs, therfore
the kernel has 'panicked'.
A kernel panic is when something goes awfully wrong. Think of it as the
equivalent of a BSOD from windows.

My own experience with USB is that it doesn't work very well yet. It
hogs CPU resources. I have one box with a ZIP100 and another with a
Zip100. Both are parallel port devices. If I were to purchase
another Zip drive I would make in a SCSI device. In fact, I would
make all my peripherals and HDs SCSI.

Hi,
I am having trouble configuring my printer (HP LJ 5L), I have always used
the printtool, but
this time I just wanted to see how it can be done manually. I have read the
print-HOWTO but
could not find a solution to my problem.
This printer works fine under Windows so it is not a cable/printer problem.
"cat error > /dev/lp0" gives: (where error is a text file)

"lpr -Plp0 error" gives:
lpr: unable to print file: The requested resource was not found on this

I am running Mandrake 7.2 (kernel version 2.2.17, i586)
"cat /etc/printcap" gives:

"rpm -qa|grep filter" gives:

Hi Mark,
I'll give it a try; You weren't very descriptive on you mouse
type...but the plain vanilla will normally work in my cases (in my
experience). Well, do you vi, or do you emacs? I'm assuming that you
are, as you say, a *complete* newcomer. I emacs, so I'll proceed with
emacsese instructions.
Starting from the command prompt...
$>emacs /etc/XF86Config
This will open the text configuration file for all your X stuff (man,
I feel like I'm totally insulting your intelligence...forgive if so).
Next, use either your "page down" or arrow keys to get to the mouse
section of the file. Comment out all the extra junk that we really
don't need by simply adding a "#" to the beginning of the line. The
lines I'd comment out would be:
#Option , "Name" , "Autodetected"
#Option , "Vendor" , "AutoDetected"
Since I know that you don't need those. Use your arrow keys again,
and the backspace or delete key to change the "on" to "off" in the
Emulate Three Buttons line. While your at it, if the file really says
"Protocal" instead of "Protocol", you'll need to correct it...but I
assume that was a typo. That may be all that we need. Save the file
by pressing the control key and the "x" key together, and then the
control key and the "s" key together...you should see "Wrote file
/etc/XF86Config" at the bottom of the screen. Then close emacs by
pressing the control key and the "x" key together, and then the
control key and the "c" key together.
Now, let's try it out. At the command prompt, type:
$>startx
Is your mouse working now? If not, use emacs to edit the file again.
Next, I'd try changing the "/dev/psaux" to
"/dev/mouse"....save...close emacs...try "startx" once more. Still
not working? Is your mouse a "wheel mouse"? If so, you may want to
change the "ps/2" to "IMPS/2"...however, as I said previously...if you
mouse is actually a ps/2, then it should work. Now, if you mouse is
USB, let me know and we'll go from there.
My gut feeling is the "/dev/psaux" should be "/dev/mouse".
Hope I didn't over simplify (insult you intelligence)....I'm just way
bored today I guess.
Let us here how it turned out.

Well, while it is not a cheap modem, my personal recomendation is an
external USR/3Com Courrier V.everything modem. They are workhorses,
work with every OS I have tried (and I have tried a lot) and work
virtually forever. The ISPs I have worked at swore by them for their
dialup pools, and if a business like an ISP that depends on modems
working for keeping customers will only use a $250 modem, then that
works for me as well. Have been using mine for a couple of years now
with no problems, and way better connection speeds than I was getting
with the cheapo internal modems I was using before that kept dyining
on me.

Date: Sun, 17 Jun 2001 16:13:22 +0200
Hi,
I recently installed the Mandrake 8.0 on one of our computers here, and I
can't figure out how to setup quota. I am by no means an expert, but I had
some experience with earlier systems (i.e. Mdk 6.1, RedHat 6.2 ) and never
run into this kind of problem:
when I run quotacheck it scans the filesystem but doesn't produce the
aquota.* (nor quota.* ) files. No errors whatsoever. I run quotacheck as
root, the filesystem is mounted with usrquota. Basicaly I do everything
just as I would do with earlier versions, on which it works fine.
So, what's different in Mdk 8.0?
Thanx,
Michal.

Also have a look at Code Crusader! It doesn't look like Visual C++, but
then, who wants that?? I find working with Code Crusader much more
intuitive. Also it has a really nice debugger (Code Medic) coming with
it. Also it can do more than just C++.
