I would personally suggest the late 2.1's or the new 2.2pre's that are
out. The only difficulty is that you have a lot of work ahead in that
you need to carefully check out /usr/src/linux/Documentatin/Changes to
see which things need upgrading to avoid lots and lots of frustration
and cursing.
The 2.0 (late) kernels have worked fine for me with dual processor
machines, but _not_ with quads. Since you are using a dual, you could
uncomment the #SMP=1 line in the Makefile and it should work. If you
go to newer kernels performance will be somewhat better, and some
devices may behave better. But don't forget the Changes file to see
what else has to be upgraded...
