I have a very similar problem, behaving exactly the same way with regard
to SMP, using the same drive. I've emailed the IDE-tape maintainer
about it; he said there could well be some SMP race conditions in the
driver, and just recently got a SMP system, so they should be worked on
soon.
As a temporary workaround, you can activate SCSI emulation and use the
tape drive like a SCSI tape drive. I just got through a backup that way
and it seems to work.
