I have had a similar problem. I have a Soundblaster 16 ( Vibra ) and it
does the same thing. Quake/Quake II works fine and mp3 players are
broken. My theory is that Quake uses the 8 bit interface and the mp3
players use the 16 bit interface ( so my 8 bit works and my 16 bit does
not ). Another theory I heard is that it has something to do with gnome.
I don't have an answer, just the same problem. I don't think, however,
that it is an SMP issue so this is probably not the forum to discuss it.
I could be wrong. Anyone know of any SMP related sound issues like this?

thanks,
