Sorry, from the reactions to my posting I see that my use of the term "number crunching" might have been misleading at least, maybe wrong. Let me clarify: My observation was not based on any benchmark testing floating point performance of the CPU, it is a gross impression from running some of my stuff. These programs definitively do things other than excercising floating point arithmetic, e.g. hefty memory touches. I used this misleading term I won't repeat here to designate the kind of application I am running, as opposed to say a webserver. Why this difference in performance exists is a miracle to me and I am afraid I am not going to probe into it - I'll just take it as a heavenly blessing, which may or may not occur to you depending on the code you have and on whether you are leading a good life ...
