Need to get a little advice from the experts on the list.
I am looking at specing out a beowulf cluster that
will be used in a production enviroment. The codes
that will run on it are extremely memory intensive and
large.
Right now the CFD codes are on viscous flow simulations
and store seperation events. Typical problems are being
run now on origin 2000 R10K systems. Typical size are
~5-7 gig of memory and 20-40 processors.
Now my questions. There is a decision to be made on
going with the multi processor boards vs single boards
using Pentium II 450 mhz processors.
I know we are going to take a hit in performance
due to the fact that the processors are fighting over
memory access. With the large problems I expect the
codes to get memory bound.
Does anybody know what a normal increase in
system performance is for going dual vs adding another
single node? We are assuming 150& increase to add a
processor and 200% for the add a node ignoring the latency
in the network.
I am aware of the 2.0.X kernels and the 2.1.X kernels as well.
It is my understanding that the 2.1.x kernels are still considered
development and not for a stable enviroment use, is that true?
What is processor steppping and is it still a problem in
matching processors on a multi board system?
Are there any issues with the current kernels that need to
be weighed in the decision to go dual vs single nodes?
Thanks for any inputs that you deem appropriate in helping
make this decision..
