Have any of you bought an Astor/Astor2 and L440GX+ or N440BX board and
built your own relatively high end server? I've been looking at doing
this since I think it can be done for roughly 60% of what a retail
solution (using the exact same parts) goes for. In fact while pricing out
an Astor based box, I started thinking, why not just go Xeon and do a
SC450NX? Unfortunately, the SC450NX doesn't appear to be available as
parts through wholesale channels, but you can get one reasonably equipped
for just a few $k more than an Astor, and you gain:
a) more cpu expansion (4 rather than 2)...and obviously more CPU power
b) one more hot swap drive bay (6 rather than 5)
c) rack mount case
d) hot swap redundant power supplies
So...have any of you bought an SC450NX box from an Intel integrator and
turned it into a kick-ass Linux server?
Management wants to at least know of some success stories before putting
up the cash to build a few of these for internal use.
