I don't know what exactly you mean by "generous coating", but it
doesn't sound like the best thing to do. The best thermo transfer is
still where the heatsink directly touches the chip. Thermal paste is
only supposed to fill the small gaps filled with air. The paste
transfers heat better than air but still not as good as direct contact.
I think the best way is to put a thin layer of paste on the chip and
then press on the heatsink and fix it in that place.
