Well, there *are* some library issues (we have had to get patches for
two of our commercial packages) to do with (IIRC) glibc2.1 vs 2.0.

Wow. If that's the same box that the PC was in you're nuts to use it.
Don't you think the hard discs might have had their lives shortened a
little? God knows how much of a shock the system took when bits got
ripped off the case. Are you seriously using it? (tell me you're just
waiting for a replacement please ;-))

It's not all that traumatic to recompile the kernel - esp. if you use
the RedHat kernel RPM and just change the SMP option (nothing else
except maybe the processor type). That way, the RedHat defaults should
get used for everything else and it should just work. A minor drawback
with that approach is that just about every bit of code in the kernel
will get compiled but what the hell... Do read the README and do
remember the "make modules modules_install" bit at the end.
